WEEKEND QUESTION March 10th /March 12th.

We're all in different stages of Life.

What are /were your goals in Life and did you achieve them?

Which one are you most happy with/proud of, which ones are you still working on?

What are your plans to achieve them / what did you do to achieve them if you already "there"?

Never had much in the way of goals or dreams, but when I was younger I wanted to travel a lot and be either a scientist, astronaut or work with animals.

To date I've achieved none of them and, apart from the travelling one, I've probably left it too late.

Also was never that much of a goal setter, beyond things like:

When Battle of the Planets was on I wanted to be a member of G-Force.

When Emergency was the big thing, wanted to drive a firetruck.

When BJ and the Bear was on, wanted to drive a big rig.

When A-Team was on I wanted to be a member of a crack commando unit that was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit, and that promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade o the Los Angeles underground.

Beyond that I wanted to race cars, have enough money to buy all the toys I wanted, have a wonderful wife and a nice house, and retire early.

Of those, I've gotten to slalom and rallycross cars, and lap on a a race track.  And marshal bike and car racing.  So mostly that one.

I haven't bought all the toys I want, but a pretty good percentage 🙂
I did manage the wonderful wife, and the house is pretty nice.

Still working on the retiring early, unfortunately.

WEEKEND QUESTION March 10th /March 12th.

We're all in different stages of Life.

What are /were your goals in Life and did you achieve them?

When I was very little I used to tell people I wanted to be a pizza maker and spin the dough in the air. Later I realized we were dirt poor and I just wanted to get to a point in life where I wasn't constantly worried about money.

I do have some future goals which involves converting a portion of the family farm into a forested wetland which stems from some noble, if naive, ideas about attempting to leave the world in better shape than I found it

I did work in a pizza place as one of the many jobs I held while getting my wife and myself through college. In fact I can still spin the dough around in the air. So you know, mission accomplished. As a result of getting through college and getting decent jobs I rarely worry about being so poor I lose everything. If you've ever been that kind of poor though you never really quit worrying about it. We also have actual pensions, so fingers crossed that whole not being dirt poor thing is behind me for good (knocks on wood).

Still working on the farm thing.

For the pizza thing I worked nights in a pizza shop. For the not being poor thing my wife and I went to college. We kind of did it in stages though. My wife is a few years older than me so she went first while I worked as much as possible to keep a roof over our heads. I think I averaged something like 64 hours a week for the last three years of her education. I even managed to get a couple of community college classes under my belt while doing it. Then after she graduated and got a good job I went back to school and got my degree while she kept the lights on and food on the table. It worked and now we both have decent jobs, pensions and a union that helps protect us from unreasonable management.

For the farm thing I've drawn up plans to plant and create a forested wetland over a period of ten years starting with changing the hydrology in one field and then planting it with native herbaceous vegetation and about 400 woody stems per acre of various shrub and tree species. That's not going to be cheap, so I've shopped the plan around looking for grant money to do so. Unfortunately it's just outside of a watershed where there is plenty of money for this kind of work and I've been having trouble finding any organizations in our watershed with the funding for restoration. The next step is talking to some mitigation bankers who build these environments to sell "credits"to developers who impact wetlands elsewhere as a way of compensating for ecosystem loss. That route could tie my hands on what I could do with the land in the future, but they'd pay me a lot more per acre to restore this than what I'm getting for rent on the land. Also, I have to find someone who doesn't mind that I'm planning on leaving a few acres of land out of this plan in order to build a house at the back of the fields some day where I can retire away from people.

Keep living my life by my rules and accepting that CHAOS is Life! So, Enjoy Life!

After a first failed attempt (thank goodness), I did get married. Unfortunately my wife passed away before we could have children, but it is my hope to become a husband again and then a father.

When I was a kid I wanted to become an Archeologist or a Zoologist.

Instead I became a professional soldier in the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

No regrets, I love my job and made it to Warrant Officer.

After a few relationships which sadly didn't work out I found my girl with whom I'm very happy ( 14 years and going).

Always wanted a dog, I grew up with a Boxer dog and have had Boxers since then.

We bought a beautiful home a few years ago where I finally have my own Office/Hobby Room.

My plans are to upgrade with solar panels and such and some new roofing. I will retire in 4 years, so maybe find a part time job then and hobby/travel etc.

How did I achieve it? Basically, playing by the rules, go to school, work, save some money, be a little bit sensible about stuff regarding what to spend money on.

Reason? / how did it go?

Taught classes at Reapercon.

I wanted to do it, and it seems to have gone well; I've gotten a lot of good feedback about what I taught.

I'm not really sure. It changes every time I put any serious thought into it.

When I was a kid the only thing I knew was that I didn't want to be a farmer. after 3 years of city life I moved home to help my father. Our goal was to have a good sized, well maintained, profitable ranch. We came close but stupid relatives attacking him, bad weather and bad luck set us back over the years.

I'm proud of the fact I stuck with my dad through the worst of it and we didn't let idiots destroy us. The farm is a mess now because of the time and money we wasted for so many years. No more outside attacks but the last several years of drought have kept me from doing everything I'd like. My kids aren't interested in the farm so I'm mostly alone trying to maintain what used to take several people.

Current goal is to just make enough money to keep the wife happy and maintain the life we have. Be nice to get more debt paid down and increase the size of the cattle herd. At the moment I've rented out 1/3 of my land and that gives me the cash to pay my fixed expenses. Hopefully the weather will turn wetter soon and my fields will start producing normally again and then I'll have the extra money to do some needed improvements. Stubbornness and endurance are the most important traits you need to farm in a marginal area.

Most recently I put myself forward at work and offered to take on more responsibilities, rather than waiting for opportunities to appear.

It's actually gone extremely well! My supervisor was surprised at all these "hidden" logistics skills I have (not much need for them in my current position, which is why she hadn’t seen them before), and it's actually caused both of us to seriously consider changing the course of my position from just a medical records clerk to an administrative assistant (which would also come with a pay increase!). I've also discovered that the more I offer to learn new skills, not only does this make me a more valuable employee, but I'm also really enjoying stretching my brain more than I have in a long time.

My top goal in life growing up was to get married and be a mom. While the married thing worked out well, the mom thing has yet to happen. 😞

My secondary goals were focused on what job I wanted, and that changed on a monthly basis. I wanted to be everything, from astronaut to geologist to interior designer; you name it, I dreamed of doing it at some point. I eventually settled on Speech-Language Pathologist after taking some sign language classes, because I loved sign language so much and it was a job I could do and still raise a family.

I got my Bachelors in the field and made it halfway through the Masters program before failing out (I was going through some severe anxiety and depression at the time; it was probably the best outcome because it woke me up to how badly I was doing).

I'm very happy with MrBoot, and while I didn't end up as an SLP, I eventually landed in a medical-related field (managing medical records) and have been pretty happy with it so far.

As far as the family goal, we're still working on the infertility thing. Perhaps we'll adopt eventually, but it's a big decision we're still thinking over. Right now I'm actually trying to figure out what to do with my life next. Maybe I'll go back to school, maybe I'll just focus on my current job, haven't decided yet. I never actually wanted a career, but it looks like I might end up with one anyways.

Huzzah!

Question March 7th.

Would you describe yourself as Extravert/introvert or somewhere in between?

Are you comfortable with it?

I am an extroverted introvert. I don't need lots of interaction with people, but a bit here and there helps shake things up every so often. Kind of like certain species of cactus: I just need watered every so often. I'm perfectly fine with it, I find a majority of people I have to interact with these days to be on the annoying spectrum.

QUESTION March 8th.

Lots of like some Me-time, what is your place to go / things to do when you feel like that?

Currently no place is sacred at home anymore when you have humans and canine companions recovering from surgeries at your own home. Slip away for 5 minutes piece and you only get 3 minutes before someone is hollering for help with one of them.

I asked a fast-food restaurant worker if they had an item that wasn't listed on their clearly displayed menu. I genuinely hate asking for things to be made special when the menu is in plain sight. But I was buying dinner for the family to take home, was in a time crunch, and had to find something a diabetic recovering from foot surgery could eat. So I asked if they had anything that wasn't breaded and fried, and it turned out they actually had roasted chicken, it just wasn't on the menu.

I had planned to be an Emergency Medicine doctor, possibly an Intensivist. I got sidetracked with other pursuits and never retook my MCAT or reapplied to med school. Then when I decided to go for Physical Therapy school, some family had illness that took precedence, then I got injured and endured some debilitating chronic pain that screwed up my life for several years. So I never achieved that either.

I'm most happy that I stayed true to my values. When family needed me, I didn't turn my back on them, despite the personal cost to me. I still have the family member in my life when they needed assistance.

I don't have any plans to achieve them. Those goals are out of reach currently, and not even on my radar. Plus, some of that chronic pain is starting to return, hopefully it is fleeting or else I may need more surgeries myself. And keep my job, so I can care for Molly and Dixie.

In all honesty, I don't really know what goals I had back in the day.  I've silenced out a lot of the past in my mind in order to move forwards.  Some say it's a bad thing, I say it's better to focus on what I actually have the power to change.

  • Many joked my goal when I was young was to live hard, and die young, preferably with as big of a fireball as possible.  They weren't wrong, that fireball just never had the chance to come about.  I don't do quite as many wild things as I used to, partially because I haven't had a vehicle for over 15 years, but also because, well, it doesn't take long to start noticing some of the after-effects piling up, with many of them being permanent ones throughout your life...  Like damage to one's hands, knees, and wrists, which I'm thankfully usually able to work through.
  • Always wanted to be a fighter pilot, but it's rather hard to do that when at age 5 or 6 you're wearing glasses, and that immediately disqualifies you from most piloting positions in the military.  So I then wanted to become a tanker after that, because TANKS ARE FREAKING COOL!  In the end, I wound up not doing the military thing, being one of the few people in my extended family to NOT do such, and in the end, I'm happy for it.  Been a LOT of rough bumps through the past twenty years, but I've learned from most.  Usually.  I did, however, get to sit in a CF-18 (yes I know they're CF-188's these days), as well as ride in the copilot's seat in a Kiowa or Twin Huey (can't remember which - I was EIGHT YEARS OLD at the time, and focused on restraining the urge to push the button I was told I wasn't allowed to push.  Yes, the one next to "COMM" that said "XMIT", and thirty seconds later I found out ~WHY~ he said don't press it, because he was flight/wing leader for the formation, and was not only talking to the four other helicopters flying formation, but also to traffic controllers for C-YXD about what they were doing, where they were going, etc etc), and that's good enough for me!
  • Always wanted to get my wings, aka a pilot's license.  Haven't, and probably won't.  Not because pilot killers got my uncle (power lines), but because of just how expensive it is to get into, and the starter pay is noticeably worse than my current field of work.  Plus I don't want to be the first one in history to vibrate an airplane apart (yup, tweaked my usual joke about why I don't work in an office, I get bored, and I'm hyper!  This is why I work as a delivery driver, to not just burn off physical energy, but get that nice mental workout alongside it all)
  • For a few years I wanted to do a Red Bull Crashed Ice event.  I got to drive under the massive jump from the last time they were in town, that's close enough for me.  Was a ton of fun to watch the livestream though...
  • Still want to paint an army to completion.  Still working on that one.
  • Biggest thing right now is I want to clear up my debts, and then work on acquiring a house, even though things are heavily stacked against someone in my status these days.  It's probably doable, doubly so because the debt thing will be cleared come end of June, which I really really REALLY can't wait for!
  • I'd absolutely love to do Targa Newfoundland, even "just" the TSD/NavEx version of it, because oh man that would be a blast...  But it's also hard to get into, and is stupidly expensive.  But if I have that kind of spare cash, I might seriously give it a shot...  Just not the performance rally side, I greatly prefer the idea of Time/Speed/Distance rallying, because you can do more than look at the dirt in front of you!

There's probably a bunch of things I've wanted to do but I've forgotten about over the years, or they've been done and I just keep doing the one foot in front of the other thing.

Honestly don't know how to answer this one.  Guess I could say I always wanted a 3d printer once they became more akin to tools, and I not only have one, but a second one on the way now for larger items...  And the resin printer too...

Life's been derailed several times over the years by mental health difficulties. And now a bad back. I'm told when I was very little I wanted to be a grocery bagger.  I have bagged my own groceries, so mission accomplished?

Not necessarily proud, but inordinately relieved that after 6 years and two lawyers I won my disability case, backdated just enough to still get payments.

I believe my high school yearbook career aspiration was crazy cat lady. I only have one cat, but I'm crazy about him, so mission accomplished? When I was little I wanted to be a paeleontologist, archaeologist or writer. I originally went to university to become an English teacher. It didn't work out, but that is a long story. Some days the trailers at work are so dirty I feel like I am excavating layers of sediment.

When I was 19, Mumsy asked me what my goals were. I don't remember them all, but I did want to be a published author; get married in the temple and own a house. I do own my own house, and I love it. I got a letter published a number of years ago in White Dwarf magazine, but that's not exactly what I have in mind. My muse doesn't visit me often these days. I will probably never get married in the temple, at least not on earth, as I am an ace woman, and that's not what many guys are looking for. I have been doing very well with overcoming my communication skills deficit, but it's still something NTs are prejudiced about, so I've given up trying to get a career outside of a trade. I haven't had any luck getting an apprenticeship.

I still want to write a decent book, or a screenplay. I think the secret to being a good writer is to read everything. I read non-fiction almost as often as fiction. I've read popular authors and banned ones. I won't read Oprah or Heather's book of the month. I read D&D books and I try to read the classics.

Subconscious me seems to want to graduate from university with a B. Sc., as that is one of my reoccuring dreams (at night). I also have telekinesis dreams all the time, but nothing has moved under the power of my mind alone, except perhaps the dog when I stare at her.
