WEEKEND QUESTION March 17th / March 19th.

Do you ( or did you) own a Fish Tank/ Terrarium/Paludarium?

What species live(d) in there?

PICS?

Yes.  When I was a child my brother and I would sometimes "acquire" a wild garter snake (plains or common) that we would house for a couple weeks, then release.  Pa Strawhat does not like snakes so that was about all he could handle.

As an adult we did try to keep fish a couple times.  We started with bettas, and neither Eldest, Mrs. Strawhat, or myself could keep one alive.  Youngest had a tank for a several years that she was able to keep going.  I don't remember the types of fish she had in that one.

Oh dear… okay, so inside it’s pretty simple.  A 37gal aquarium that’s down to a few bloodfins.

Outside?  A 1500sf greenhouse with an 18’ diameter corrugated steel lined aquacultural setup, home to 20 Japanese koi.  The fish range from 12 - 28” in length, and the oldest are nearing 20 years old.

I posted some videos a few years ago for our local koi club, if you want to see the craziness for real…

When I grew up me father had a Terarium first with lizards, tree frogs and such.

We also got turtles and newts.

Later we had an aquarium with all kinds of tropical fish and some smaller shrimps and snails.

When I moved out I had several Terraria and a Paludarium with all sorts of tropical fish, turtles, newts, frogs, lizards and toads.

I also had a desert set up with some lizards and a tortoise.

After my divorce and starting anew I didn't have the time and space anymore for it.

And now decades later I have the space and time but I decided not to pick this up again.

Several reasons, but I still like seeing them and when I visit a Zoo, the reptile and aquarium section is always my favorite.

As to myself, I went through three bettas at the end and first few years after college.  Small, still, plastic tank, one fake plant, and some sort of gel cubes sometimes used as hydroponic potting soil that I found sold as a fish toy.  The longest lived fish, #3, just over a year, loved to do strafing runs through the cubes, so they did work as toys.  They were pretty with fun little personalities, but I didn't like the work and didn't really have the space.

Now, when I was very little in a time I don't remember, we had a proper aquarium with several fish.  I have been told stories of the one species that liked to jump.  One hit itself on the roof of the tank and died.  Another disappeared from the bucket they were put in while the tank was being cleaned.  They found it several weeks later dried up and rubbery under my parent's bed.  The most retold story is of a Christmas, age 3, I think, when I got a toy kitchen set.  Apparently I took the little fry pan and headed straight for the tank to fry a fish like grandma did since grandpa fished a lot.  The adults headed me off in time.

Then there were the unfortunate goldfish and tadpole given to all the brownie troops at our COSI sleepover on subsequent years. Sometime between 2nd and 4th grade.  No care instructions to speak of.  The goldfish slipped down the drain while I cleaned the bowl, and the tadpole died within two weeks, probably from chlorine poisoning as no one ever said to treat the water.  If it hadn't gone down the drain, the goldfish would have had the same problem.  I don't believe any in our troop lived to become frogs. A few goldfish might have survived if the girls already had fish at home. It was really rather irresponsible of the adults in charge of the sleep over.

What a W.O.O.F conspiracy!

I had to go learn new wurds!  But final answer, No, never had a paludarium.

I learned all these new wurds:

“Aquarium, Paludarium, Riparium, Terrarium, Florarium, Insectarium, etc. are all different types of Vivarium.“

Back when I was a kid there was a rather unlucky turtle. We should have released it beside the local creek so it could have become a snack for some lucky water moccasin, but no …we didn’t do that.

But I was 8? So I didn’t own the tank.

It was way [too] long ago for pics. Maybe I can find a pic of the same type of turtle.

QUESTION 20th March.

Dating/trying to meet someone etc...

What's the funniest or best pick up line you ever heard/used/ was used on you?

Did it work?

I have no problems asking the guys out, I just straight up ask them.

My boyfriend and I were at the game store one evening before our date and he whistled at me. I told him not to whistle at me, I'm not a dog in my most threatening voice. The poor guy said that it was the text chime on his phone.

I must have led a sheltered life; i.e., I never used, heard, or had a pickup line n me.

The only line I remember was:

The Line: Hey Baby, what's your sign?

The Reply: Stop.

One of the things I like about going to Ren Faires is that the women don't generally mind if you compliment them on their costumes - you don't generally need to worry about being tasered, pepper-sprayed or sued for telling them they look nice or even being mildly flirty with them.

One of my friends, who'd never been to a faire before, once asked me how I got away with being flirty with complete strangers. In my best pseudo-Irish faire accent, I told him, "Lad, th' art o' turnin' a pretty phrase is the art o' turnin' a pretty girl's head."

I was ordering food at the local Ren Faire, and the young lady taking my order looked very nice in her costume, so when she gave me my food, I said...

"If I may say so, M'lady... Tis a fine faire, and a lovely day, but both together are not half so fine, fair and lovely as yerself."  And I winked at her.

She blushed, and laughed - I almost got her to break character.  ::P:

Then there was a three-woman sword-fighting/theatre act that would perform at my local faire... I used to take a lot of pictures of them performing, so after each show I'd show them the good shots.

All the end of the day, as the crowds were shuffling out of the faire grounds, all the costumed faire personnel and some of the acts would line up at the gate to say goodbye to the fairegoers. One time, as I was walking past the three ladies, I tipped my hat to them and said...

"Ladies... Til I may once again hold the light of your smiles with me eyes... I shall hold it within my heart." ::D:

Best comeback I ever heard was to a cocky semi-drunk. "Hey Baby, if I was the last man on earth and you were the last woman, what would you do?" Her answer "I'd become a lesbian."

It’s hard to imagine someone outdoing the Flight of the Conchords…

“Looking 'round the room, I can tell that you
Are the most beautiful girl in the room
In the whole wide room
And when you're on the street
Depending on the street
I bet you are definitely in the top three”

I don’t think there is any pickup line that can convey interest better than direct eye contact.  Although as a comic once quipped ‘it’s a fine line between an intense  gaze and the psychotic stare of a serial killer searching for his next victim!’

I've been decidedly uninterested most of my life.  It's really quite uncomfortable for me if someone tries to pick me up.  Luckily as a short, fat girl who rarely goes out anymore, it doesn't happen often.

I did have troubles in Paris the week I was there in college.  Had a few men come on to me with roughly the same line. 'Hello, you beautiful. I from Senegal. Marry me.'  I presume I looked like an entrance visa. Getting them to go away sometimes took creative ducking down side streets.  Got lost for awhile in Montmartre that way.
