QUESTION MARCH 23rd.

In this digital age, do you still like to read the old fashioned newspaper?

About the only time I do these days is  the cover story. The newspaper rack at work is located across from the time-clock, so I'll take a glance at it. The local paper thou is really not even worth birdcage liner.

Never was a big newspaper reader and that hasn't changed.

Not really. Save the trees for another use, we certainly need them. Plus I don't miss the ink smearing all over my hand from handling the newspaper. Only thing I really miss is the daily crossword, though I can still do that online.

Yes, but on three days a week I have to go digital.  They don't deliver a paper Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  BTW did you notice the incorrect date?

Edit: due to a malfunction of WOOF's time machine I accidently used the wrong date. Just corrected it.

I mostly skip it, even though I regularly read the paper starting in my early 20s.

The decline in quality (both in terms of the reporting and the physical printed sheet), increase in prices, etc. have all pushed me away.  Even the comics are mostly junk anymore.  The last time I read the Sunday paper, one section was about 50% print ads.

Growing up we got the daily local newspaper, but once I left for the university I mostly quit reading them.

I did read an article a few years ago that made the argument that the loss of local papers was bad because they were what had traditionally kept local politicians honest.  I'm not sure to what extent other media has picked up the slack, but it seems unlikely that your national flavor of choice (CNN/FOX/ABC/etc.) is going to bother with minor local corruption unless it turns into something spectacular.

For starters, I pretty much stopped reading/viewing any news back not long after the pandemic started.  All the everything with it plus the US Election news (which tends to dominate Canadian news) was all a bit too much.  I've never really gotten back into paying much attention to the news since, and only notice things when someone points it out to me.  A bit of living obliviously, but hey, my blood pressure is down.....
Beyond that I've never been one for reading the papers.  I'll read the comics when I'm visiting my folks, they still get the local paper, even though the whole thing is now smaller than the classifieds were when I was a kid (do kids these days know what the classifieds were??).  No puzzles for me, my folks fight over them (dad has to copy the cryptoquote on to  piece of paper before mom does it so he can too).

You might be onto something. Printing two or even three copies of the same puzzle in one edition would enable sharing amongst friends or family.

Printed publications desperately need to find simple ways to add value.

This function has mostly become the province of local TV stations if they have a local news department complete with investigative reporters.

Unfortunately, there's not much journalism left in local news in upstate NY, the channels are locked up by Sinclair broadcasting. We're a couple reporters at a single very small station and a dying newspaper away from no local news or accountability. From the schedules for local farmer's markets, new business openings, births/obits, political news (the paper still runs a full profile on each candidate for every cycle, top to bottom), etc.

Local news is essential for a civic life, and it's on the cusp of disappearing.

Some people supplement some of that stuff with social media, but sourcing is difficult and overall I believe social media is a huge mental health and societal issue and avoid it as much as possible. Since we already had better methods to spread this info without destroying our society from the inside.

I may feel strongly about the topic.

Quizzle for 23 March, 2023: What is your favorite memory of one of your pets?

Tough question; I've got lots of fond memories.

First one that comes to mind: one of our cats jumping up on the arm of the chair I was sitting in while eating a hamburger and helping himself to a bite from the opposite side just as I took a bite.

I guess he was tired of me ignoring his begging.

When I was in grad school, my wife and I had a guinea pig named Goldie.  One summer I spent almost entirely on writing my dissertation; since I was starting a full-time teaching job in the fall, I wanted to get as much done over the summer as possible before those teaching-related time commitments.  I was mostly sitting at my computer at home, alone with Goldie (since my wife was working on campus), and I would read passages out loud to so I could hear how they sounded.  That guinea pig would listen so intently, staring at me while I read, and she would start making noises when I finished.  I swear she was giving feedback, and I could tell whether she was approving of the passage or not.  I may or may not have been losing my mind (you really have to, to some extent, to enroll in a Ph.D. program...), but it was a very productive summer, and I credit Goldie for that.  And yes, she did get mentioned in the acknowledgements.

Similar story.  Our new cat was sick and not eating much so we were mighty surprised when, one evening, she jumped up on the table to steal a slice of ham from husband's snack plate.  That earned her the nickname "ham snatcher".

There's a lot to choose from, but the one that I'll always remember is also a rather sad one.

Prince (My Yorkshire Terrier) had been very ill for a few months and all he really did was sleep all the time. Then one night he got me up early in the morning to go outside, but instead of going back to sleep he wanted to play, so we sat up for an hour or so playing fetch and stuff and he was running around like his old self.

He passed away later that day.

Probably reading far too much into it, but it's always felt like he was saying goodbye.
