Quizzle for 23 March, 2023: What is your favorite memory of one of your pets?

I've had a lot of great pets over the year so it's hard to say which memory is my favorite. But this morning, after having to throw our cat out of the bedroom last night for being mischievous while I was trying to sleep, there was a line of cat toys (and a couple of dog toys) starting at the bedroom door going down the stairs through the front room then through the living room and into the TV room leading to his box of toys. Seriously, there was a different toy every few feet from the toy box to the bedroom door. No idea what the heck he was thinking, but I suspect I'll be telling this story as a favorite for a while.

Thx for covering for me @Corsair!

Lots of fond memories, Boxer Dogs are clowns.

My Boxer dog before Brutus was Odin.

If I drank tea in the evening I usually had some biscuits to go with it.

I always shared them with him.

One for me, one for him.

But one evening I had no biscuits.

He saw me drinking tea and responded by walking to the cupboard where his treats were, knocked the door with his paw to tell me, okay...no biscuits? Then give me something else!

Which I did of course.

My first guinea pig liked to play hide and seek when he could get loose, which seemed to happen a lot.  I was 5.  We'd take him out of his cage and the two of us would play on the floor of my bedroom, with me and a barrier of wooden blocks to try and keep him contained.  He'd break free, run under some piece of furniture, then squeal as loud as he could.  When mom and I would move in, he'd quietly run to a new hiding place then squeal again.

We took him to visit my great grandma in her efficiency, and he got loose on the floor again.  Grandma had heavier furniture and less space to move it, so we were getting a little desperate to catch him.  Then he ran into the kitchen area, the only part of the room with linoleum flooring.  He had never experienced anything but carpet.  Started to run, and all four legs went spread eagled out for under him.  Couldn't get any traction, and was very confused as we easily scooped him up.

Whew, lots to pick through!  Our Bengal, Slinky, was a handful for most of her life.  When we first got her, she was a tiny, but ferocious kitten.  We took her to the clinic ‘Cats Exclusive’ for her first checkup.  We commented that she was on the hard to handle/restrain side, and showed them some of our handling wounds.  The vet was a little patronizing as she told us ‘that’s fine, we’ll get one of the interns in here to trim her nails for you.’

After a few minutes with the three of us wrestling her unsuccessfully, the intern took Slinky in her arms and told us she needed a little more help.  I smiled as they left the room.  It was about a minute before we heard the familiar, high pitched screeches and yowls.  After another 10 minutes or so, they returned, this time with the vet as well.  They both looked a little shook up.  “Yeah, she’s pretty feisty” she commented as Slinky returned to our laps, “we were only able to get a few, but that should definitely help.  I’ve never seen a cat that was able to get out of the cuffs!  I’m not sure what to tell you…”

I almost burst out laughing/crying when I saw all of the fresh scratches up and down the intern’s hands, arm and face.  Slinky, of course, could care less.  As long as you didn’t try to restrain her, she’d immediately go back to being your best friend.  Hold her down, and There Will Be Blood!

I just finished painting one of the Mandupar pass Snow Leopards in Slinky’s honor.  I’ll add to the post when I have pictures!

CJ (Miniature Poodle Mix): My favorite thing to remember about CJ was her "talking back."  Every time you'd tell her to be quiet she'd follow up with a very quiet "woof."  I guess she needed to get the last word in.

Ming (Calico Siamese Mix):  Ming came with Mrs. Strawhat, Eldest, and Youngest when they moved in with me.  Ming wasn't terribly fond of me initially and we'd just go about our business and left each other alone.  I managed to catch some sort of virus shortly after they all moved in, and Ming wouldn't leave my side for more than a couple minutes for the entire day.  She was basically my cat after that.

Pepper (Tortie Domestic Shorthair): Unlike Ming, Pepper took to me almost instantly.  My favorite memories of her are from nearer the end of her time.  Almost every morning when it was time for me to wake up and get moving, Pepper would be snuggled against my chest dozing happily.

Topaz (Domestic Mediumhair): So far, my favorite memory of Topaz is from shortly after we got her (Pepper had a tough time after Ming passed and we got Topaz in an attempt to help keep Pepper active and interested in things: it mostly worked even if they never really got along--Topaz was twice Pepper's size and like to play a little rougher than Pepper was prepared to handle).  Anyway, Topaz was a rambunctious sort when she was younger and we could count on her to do any number of unpredictable things.  One such example comes from an evening Mrs. Strawhat and I were calmly watching TV and this blaze of orange goes soaring between our heads and lands in the middle of the living room.  The little stinker cleared the loveseat (with room to spare) in a single leap.

I'll go with one from Marty, who was one of our first 2 cats. Marty was very much the classic window hunter cat.  Whenever she saw a bird the tail would go and she'd do that Predator hunting noise.  She'd sit for hours watching the birds.  So our last place we lived was rural, we had 10 acres, and were also on the lower slopes of a Mt. (it was Nova Scotia, their really aren't any real mountains). So there was a lot of wildlife.  And the crows in the area were BIG.  I don't think they were ravens, but I never got around to taking a really good look.  Anyway, Marty would always do her thing with the crows, tail going and making her noises.  Well one day a crow landed on the deck railing just outside the window Marty was at.  Maybe 3 feet from her.  I don't think she'd ever realized just how big a crow was.  Never seen a cat go from predator to "fleeing for her life" in an instant.  🙂  She was pretty bashful afterwards.    But she did go back to shaking her tail at them eventually.  Can't keep a "mighty hunter" down for long.....

I like my job. I get to spend a lot of time standing around in streams, swamps and woods looking at interesting plants and animals. They even give me a pack of interns every year to do a bunch of the office work I don't enjoy doing. So If I had to pick something I'd just say my current job but with more money (and less politics).

Are "retired with plenty of savings" or "inheritor of massive amounts of wealth" considered jobs?  Because those sound nice.

Seriously, though, the job I have (college professor) is a pretty nice one.  Professional athlete has some appeal, but the long-term physical effects of that are often bad.  On some days, I would like to be a professional writer, probably writing novels.

But my true dream job is Vice President of the United States.  Plenty of prestige and visibility, good salary and benefits, virtually no actual responsibilities.

Polyglot translator, particularly of comics/manga or animation.  I have a terrible ear for languages, so not happening even if I could still work or go to school. Mostly I just want to be able to read and watch anything I want without having to wait for a translation.

The salary is not that great. Less than 250K. Annually.

Professional Athlete, if your sport was Golf and you could finish in the top ten a few times a year, could earn you more moolah while avoiding all the later in life physical problems.
