QUESTION March 8th.

Lots of like some Me-time, what is your place to go / things to do when you feel like that?

Before COVID it was home, with lots of crafts and hobbies to do, or the woods with just nature around me.  Now, when the walls start closing in and even DH gets to be too much I go OUT, anywhere, usually in my car for hours just driving around.  COVID shutdown was glorious, no traffic, no people, I often had entire stores and restaurants to myself.

Like others here I can handle crowds and large events, but they are tiring, especially if I have to speak or interact with people.  I enjoy being around you guys, but my brain gets overloaded. At Reapercon I will disappear to my room early in the evening.  I enjoy silence, the complete absence of sound.

I missed a few questions, so I'll answer a few at once.  I'm very much an introvert, but a lot of people are surprised by that since my career (college professor) requires teaching and public speaking, and I am very comfortable doing those things.  My place to go to be alone lately is my garage, where I currently have my miniature painting setup, though I am working to clear space to move the painting indoors.  And my all time favorite garage sale purchase was a book I bought for a quarter as a teenager, a collection of the writings of Jean Jacques Rousseau.  (You know, just what every teenager wants.  Or maybe I was weird.)  I've never found something of amazing value, but then again I very rarely shop at garage sales.

Home is my me space, but different parts at different times. My room is fine anytime. Downstairs paint room is

usually fine, better if dad isn't watching TV upstairs as it echos down the stairwell and sometimes I can hear it through headphones and closed doors.

Dad is a day person. Up in the morning, turns on TV, and it isn't off again until he goes to bed, around 8pm most nights. (After M.A.S.H. is over). I'm much more nocturnal. As long as I'm not making a lot of noise, the house is mine after he goes to bed. So I might curl up in the recliner in the living room with books, do things in the kitchen, or not worry about outside noise while Downstairs with minis.

It depends on the situation.

While, in general, the house is a "good enough" retreat for most situations where I'm overloaded, when things in the house get to be a little too much (typically, this is when the in-laws are in town) I generally retreat to the bedroom or I try to find a less-occupied area of the house and then bury my head in silly games on one of the tablets.

Painting actually gets me better results than tablet games, but the setup for painting is a bit much and people have a tendency to suddenly become very interested in what I'm doing when the painting kit comes out.  I've been known to paint over lunch at the office (not so much lately, as the boss doesn't mind me leaving early if I cut my lunch short).  But when I did paint, I always dreaded the inevitable questions:

  • How do you do that? (I put the brush in the paint, then I put the brush on the mini...)
  • How do you see things that small? (I hold it very close, just like I was doing when you asked me...)
  • Isn't that tedious? (No, this conversation is...)

I like to read as well, although I'm not as much of reader as I used to be.  And if I'm trying to find refuge in the house, the chances are that it's going to be too difficult to focus on what I'm trying to read.

Question March 9th.

What was the last thing you did that is out of your comfort zone?

Reason? / how did it go?

I don't think I have a comfort zone.

It is hard to remember.
That qualifier “last” is what makes it hard.
There are lasting memories that are from long ago, but they wouldn’t be the most recent OOCZ event.

There was me giving a speech to about 400 strangers…

I could go with that.

I was forced to. Obligated. No choice. If you are dumb enough to get the 1st or 2nd highest grade point average in your graduating class—they punish you by making you give a speech.

Miserably. (Maybe in the Middle Ages when mortar board hats were real, and not just cardboard imitations, robes were real garments, and they actually taught Oratory as a subject? Then maybe a kid with a high GPA could be expected to do a decent speech.)

But it was sad, lame, and (probably) mumbled. It’s only redeeming feature was that it was very short.

Went to a small con last weekend.  Ran a game, even.  Still had a panic attack from noise levels and had to go sit in my car 2 hours middle of Saturday afternoon session. (Not my game). Exhausted self so much slept at a rest stop outside the city for 2.5 hours shortly into 2 hour drive home Sunday, wasn't safe to drive.

Somewhere in there between con and dad gallivanting around town, we now have covid. Yay.

How about the next thing I'm going to do out of my comfort zone.  I have been asked to teach a class on painting figs at a local Con. I'm not sure that I am up to the task in "skill level" as a painter.  But know that I am able to impart knowledge.  I'll let you know in April.

Work: Learn/learning web development: CSS, Javascript, Freemarker, and Bootstrap so far.
Mini related: Sculpted 13 dragons in 2 years. (That's not entirely true as #13 is only about 1/3 done, but it is due by May, so I need to get moving on it.) Sculpted 2 humans digitally (1 done, one 4/5 done).

Had to preach at our Church a few weeks ago, I normally teach a Sunday School class, but not preaching. I guess it went okay, nobody left the church!

I don't remember exactly, but making phone calls to strangers is always awkward.  Having to make up conversation on the fly without lots of pauses makes me nervous.  I much prefer email, where there is time to compose well thought out dialogue.
