GTKY: Daily Question Thread - May 2023 Edition

Recommended Posts

Question, Monday May 8th.

Hobby check in time.  We're a week into May.  If you have hobby plans for May, how are they going?  If you don't, have you gotten any ad hoc hobbying in? (In general I'm referring to the hobbies normally discussed on these forum, so relating to miniatures.  But feel free to also include any other hobbies you may partake in.)

I aten't dead. I always have plans, plans, plans, but my plans like strategy rarely survive first contact with the enemy. My life has been very, very hectic for the last few years. We are now farming full time again, in addition to me having a real job so I can afford to farm. I finally came to the realization this year that ReaperCon really isn't a thing I can do anymore, so I have to live vicariously through all you lot. I haven't painted or done art in any meaningful way in quite a while. It's starting to show. I hope the rest of all of you are doing well.

I'm away this weekend and taking an extra day, so here's questions to cover the time.

Question, Friday May 5th.

Today is National No Pants day. Do you plan to take part?

No

Question, Saturday May 6th.

The beginning of May around here is generally the beginning of real spring like activities as the weather gets consistently warm. That of course varies depending on where you are, so what what is the first weekend of May like where you are and are you planning any outdoor activities?

We are taking the Boy Scout Troop Camping and working on the Geocaching Merit Badge, and then returning home to work on the yard, setting a new mailbox post, and repairing the garden gate.

Question, Sunday May 7th.

Race day!  This will be the first day of racing at my local(ish) motorsports track.  It's also the Miami GP for F1, and probably a few thousand other races around the globe. Do you watch or participate in any sort of competitive activity? (be it racing, traditional sports, untraditional sport, speed painting competitions, beer pong, etc)

The watching of competitive activities has been replaced with doing my life a long time ago.  I almost cannot abide what competitive players are paid for "playing a game" so to speak.  While there are people out there bringing far more important boons to society for far less.  Compete, yeah the occasional speed paint competition, chess game, Magic Card Game, Long ago there was competitive swimming, and baseball,

I have to paint a squad for Warmachine.  I finally found some people that want to play the game.  Granted I supplied starter boxes to them.  My son painted up his squad of Khadoran jacks and warcaster.  I will work on progress for my black dragon. We have a number of scouting events coming up, including a couple of Eagle Projects.  There some planned work in hte wood shop too.

I'm still painting my massive terrain project. Getting in a couple of hours a day.  I'd like to get a couple of character figures started, but still have weeks left.  Our game group has not met yet this moth, we might get enough people together this weekend to run a side game.  Meanwhile a couple of us have been playing co-op games of Borderlands3 in the evenings.

My other hobby, gardening, has been taking all my energy.  Today will see more, since it rained last night. I need to do some weeding and planting before the soil dries and sets like concrete.

No plans, just slowly working on my Lord of Gluttony.

I've got it mostly assembled so far.

No concrete hobby plans but I really should start doing something again.

Never really have plans, so anything I accomplish is a surprise. I'd like to get something painted this spring, but I still need to get a painting area set-up again (a mouse got into the room over the winter, paraded about my paints and supplies like a toilet, so I had to tear it all apart and sanitize everything, hasn't been put back together). I have this desire to attempt NMM and advanced flesh, result of watching too many Spanish painters on Youtube. I really need to get my 3d printed draconians prepped and painted for my D&D campaign. That is likely where I'll start.

I survived the weekend, so I should answer my own questions......

5th.  I did wear shorts, like usual.

6th, I was at the track marshaling a race school.  It was freaking cold with the never-ending wind.  Looked nice, if you were inside.  Outside, I could have used about 3 more layers.

Normally here it is anywhere from below freezing to mid 20s.  This weekend Saturday was around 8 C and Sunday was around 20 C

7th, I watch racing, obviously.  I also watch hockey occasionally, usually when visiting my folks.  And I do observe other sports there like curling and tennis and golf that Dad watches, but I don't watch them.

I participate in the occasional autoslalom, and play Star Wars Legion and Bolt Action in the occasional tournament.

8th.  Hobby plans. I need to finish my Dark Troopers.  8 left, one is almost done.  I'm hoping to actually have a painted army for the Bolt Action tournament in early June, so once I figure out my list I need to finish painting a bunch of stuff for BA.  I'm also working on printing out heavy mando armor and working on learning to prep and paint at least my helmet.  So far I almost broke a 3D printer and went away for 3 days, so not a lot of progress.  But the printers are back running now that I'm home at least.....

hmm

May 7th : I was at my minispawns first relay race!
they ran hard in two different trials but their team did not win either one.  Elder spawn an I spent the whole time betting on other racers, and got thanked for out "Color commentary"  by the people sitting in front of us. ( we were terrible at guessing which runner would win)
it was more than 70 races of district wide 1st-5th graders.  We were only there from #42-70  for the spawn's turn.

May 8:  I got a set of terrain called "Elven Woods"  6 trees, 12 small hills and some misc tents & things.   I finished my first tree,  worked on 8 of the 12 hills and primed 3 more trees.    so not much on the mini figures  front but lots of hobby time.  It is a lot of unsprue and glue

I wore pants...most of the day.

Outdoor activities:

Well the pond project is nearly done now.

Here is what it used to be:

The back wall fell due to the breaking of a structural support part, so I had to strip down the whole lower pond.  Figured that while I was doing that I'd make it bigger and add a skimmer pool (cleans leaves and stuff out of the pond; you can see it in these shots as the deep hole to the left).

Working progress shots:

Current state:

The surface area of the lower pond is now about 4-5 times larger than the old one.  The volume went from about 300-400 gallons to around 1700-2000.  It is now big enough to get full sized water lilies and koi.

I still have to get a few more boulders, add the plants, spread black dirt around it, and plant grass.   I also will be taking the large mound of soil to the right and making that into a patio later this summer.

Hobby Check-in:

I have been furiously working on finishing the last dragon for Dark Sword's dragon of the month series that will come out next Autumn.  I need to have it done this month.  I am almost done with the main sculpting, but the engineering is going to take a bit.

Question, Tuesday May 9th.

Are you an "in bulk" or an "as you need" it kind of shopper?

I’ve historically done both.

But, if LGM were currently observing me from a tiny, but invisible, flying saucer they’d objectively classify me as the second category.

This topic may just have come to mind due to the pending deliver of 20 kgs of 3D printer materials.....

Yes to both.

If it's on-sale, something I know we use a lot of, and I've got room to reasonably store it, I will buy in bulk.

Otherwise, I buy as needed.

Yes. It depends on what it is I'm buying. Things with a shorter shelf life I buy smaller amounts as needed. Things with a longer shelf life that I know I will use I buy bulk.

Like others have said, it depends on what it is.  When 16oz bottles of 70% IPA went on sale for 25c after COVID I bought 24 of them for DH.  When butter is 1.99 instead of ~$5 per pound I buy as many as my freezer will hold.  OTOH, I go out weekly for milk, bread, and fresh vegs.  Very often if budget allows and we have space to store it, we buy in bulk.
