Question, Tuesday May 16th.

Yesterday I stopped by my FLGS and left without buying anything, which felt weird. When you go to a hobby/gaming/whatever store, do you usually make a point of picking up at least something?

I usually do, just to help B&M stores out. Before I retired I often had to stop at a convenience store to hit the "Litter Box" and would always get a drink or something since I used the facilities.

I don't head over to the FLGS too often. So when I do I typically have a list of items I need/want. As such, there's always something going to be in stock on my shopping list. Even if they were out of everything I went there for I'm pretty certain something new would grab my attention and I'd be spending money regardless.

Yes, usually a lot of somethings. The FLGS isn't exactly local. The one in Calgary I take the train to and the one in Red Deer is more than an hour and a half away. Even the one in the big town close to me doesn't get a lot of my money because it doesn't open until 15:00h, and we like to go shopping at around 10 or 11, which is just after the sale stickers are put on the meat at the food stores.

Usually head to a store with a direct purchase in mind.  I have gone into stores to browse and kill time without making purchases.  I lived fairly far from any type of game shop for years and when I found myself in or near King of Prussia would stop into the Complete Strategist to see what was new.  I almost never walk out with less than 3 or 4 new purchases.

May 16th :

I can go in and out of a game store without purchasing but it is uncommon.  Usually if I went there with something specific in mind and they did not have it.

if I am there for paintclub or other event I usually buy something - even if is just a new bottle of paint to try.
I did stop by my FLGS during the covid lockdowns and made larger purposes, just to help make sure the shop was still there when the crisis ended.

No. I have a basement full of "somethings", I no longer feel obligated to buy random stuff.  Typically, if I'm in the store at all it's because I'm looking for a specific item, and if they have it I'll buy it.  If they don't, I shop elsewhere.

I've spoken to the store owner, who is a great guy, about what I like to buy and I understand that my interests are not what keeps his shop open. He has to stock what he can sell the most of, not specialty items that take up peg space.  They will special order, but if I'm going to go that route I'll skip the middle man and order it direct.

Question, Monday May 15th.

How is you memory, in terms of asking people the same questions over and over during an extended period of time?

Like allot of people on here, memory is fine, but sometimes recalling names can be a bit of a pain these days.

I try & help my store out whenever I go in there, I mean they do allow me to run a game there every week.  Thou, lately it's not really grabbing something already there vs ordering something for a later purchase. The store just doesn't have what I need vs MTG stuff & such. It also doesn't help that WoTC releases something every month it seems for that game.

Not especially, no.  I always want to buy things, but if there is nothing that I feel compelled to buy in the moment, I am fine with just browsing.  There just aren't that many supplies I need, and I have too big of a backlog of miniatures to paint.  Typically, though, if I am making the drive (about 15-20 minutes each way, so not really that long), I will end up buying something.

No

Hobby store — it’s likely I went looking for something very specific, like brass tubing — chance of an impulse buy is good.

Gaming store — plenty of times I have wandered in just to check out the place — diminished chance of an impulse buy, but I’ll rummage in discount bins, glance at Knick Knacks…

Whatever store — I don’t feel any obligation “to buy something

I have the right to shop, to look, to decide . . . it’s the store’s job to convince me to buy things, not my job to sustain the store.

I'm with @TGP on this one.

I feel no obligation to buy something, I come in, check what you have and if I want it I buy it, else I'll be on my way.

With most places, since they're so far out, I'm usually there to pick up an order I've previously put in.  Some days I also bring extra money because I plan on browsing, but it depends on the store.  For hobby stores, it all depends.  I rarely go in to browse, as if I'm in there it's to pick up something, and if I wind up leaving with nothing it's because they didn't have what I was looking for.

I usually do since the closest store is about an hour's drive away. I tend to call to ask if they have something in stock before I make the drive. In the past they've been kind enough to set one aside for me, but I haven't gone there in almost 3-4 years now? I think they've moved locations, from what someone told me.

No, I get what I want.  My wife already says I have too much.  ( Inconceivable!)

It depends on the shop.  There is one in town that I feel zero guilt if I don't find anything I wish to purchase.  I can't really explain it, it's not that the folks that run it are particularly awful or something, they just don't seem to be able to command my loyalty.

The others I try to find something, but don't always succeed.  Part of it is the relative infrequency that I actually manage to get to the shop (only a few times a year), part of it is loyalty to an old friend (he and his wife own the shop I go to most often).  I'm not going to lose sleep over it if I don't buy anything, but given my infrequent trips I'm usually headed out for something and so I am prepared to buy at least that item.

When I went to the Warhammer store in the Big CityTM a few months ago, I was going to buy a Gladiator tank to support my friend that works there, but I left without anything because he was out of stock at the time. Which was probably a good thing, because I didn't notice until this week that I already had one.
