GTKY: Daily Question Thread - May 2023 Edition

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Way back before covid when we played weekly at the flgs an hour away, I would browse, but only bought things maybe 15% of the time.  Several of those years I was unemployed and fighting for disability benefits, so no income to splurge on impulse buys. Some days just being in the noise of the store would trigger anxiety attacks and I couldn't leave fast enough.  Moving online was the best thing ever.

Given all that, if I'm going to any store, I probably have a list. I don't go in strange places and browse for fun.  Somewhere like Michael's I will look around other sections and may purchase more than what I came in for, but aside from the grocery store, most places to browse aren't that local.  If I'm going to drive an hour, I'll have a reason and a list.

Question, Wednesday May 10th.

As I sit here trying to get my 3D printer to print, you know, like it was 10 minutes ago, and ponder the actual meaning of "self leveling" since it doesn't seem to mean what you'd thing, what piece of modern technology do you use, or would like to use, that you find frustrating in one manner or another?

As I understand it "self leveling" creates a map of the printer surface that can compensate for small deviations.  On the whole it still needs to be leveled more or less correctly for the feature to work.

My FDM printer.  Thankfully resin is easy.

Question, Thursday May 11th.

Today is my first day back in the office since I had my back surgery.  I'm currently seriously missing my awesome desk chair at home and remembering how the office chairs do not work for my back. And trying to decide if I should message HR about the ergonomic assessment now, or after work today.....
Anyway, on to the question.  Do you have one particular favorite chair you use? (for painting, for work, for watching tv, whatever)

I purchased a nice computer chair that I use frequently, so I guess that makes it my favorite.

Question, Friday May 12th.

Toast, where are you on the scale from "slightly warm bread" to "charcoal"? Or do you even toast?

And if you toast, is your toast wifi enabled and does it have an app?
If it isn't, does your adjustment knob, slider, etc actually seem to do anything?

Golden.  No wifi. Yes, it adjusts the heating time.

Sorry about that, I woke up with the urge to go to the local all day breakfast place, so off we went and ended up running errands until about 4 pm, by which time I'd completely forgotten about doing a question.....so

Question.  Saturday, May 13th.

Have you completely forgotten to do anything lately?

and so it doesn't happen tomorrow....Question, Sunday, May 14th.

It's Mother's Day, at least here in North America. On your Mother's Day do you plan to, or did you plan to, do anything special for your mother, or your wife or significant other?  Do you have a tradition or do you wing it every year?

Not that I can remember.

My mother didn't want to do anything so in the end I just called and talked to her for awhile.

How is you memory, in terms of asking people the same questions over and over during an extended period of time?

I'm good.

Question, Tuesday May 16th.

Yesterday I stopped by my FLGS and left without buying anything, which felt weird. When you go to a hobby/gaming/whatever store, do you usually make a point of picking up at least something?

I haven't been the FLGS in years.  I believe it moved, but I don't know if it is still in business.  When I did go it was for the purpose of getting something specific, so I would leave with an item/book.

I have just the one chair, so it's the favourite by default.

I like my toast a mid-brown, but my (non-wifi enabled) toaster is pretty temperamental, so I just eat what I get.

I forget stuff all the time, my memory is terrible!

Mother's Day was a few weeks ago here in the UK, still didn't do anything though, haven't had a mother to do things for for a while.

As I stated above, I'm very forgetful. I would probably need to ask people for reminders a lot if I had any one to ask! (There's just the Housemate and her memory is even worse!)

Downtown has acquired a few more FLGS recently (We've got 4 now!), but I never go into them, I'm much happier buying things online.

So my local FLGS, I'm usually in 2-3 days a week (I park in the lot beside them if I'm in the office, or go to an appointment in the area, plus go in to play Star Wars Legion and Bolt Action).  I usually at least grab a pop if walking by, but Monday they were out of Diet Dew and Diet Dr. Pepper, and was with my wife and on our way to lunch, so just chatted for a couple of minutes with one of the owners and the other employee who was there.  But normally I always try to find something to pick up there.

The other two local game stores I'll keep a list of things I'd like to check out there, and if I'm in the area, I might pop in and see what they have from the list. But it isn't a problem if I don't get anything there.

I have an overachieving toaster!  It can do all the colours at once. ( Why do I suspect @Pezler the Polychromatic ?)

Yes. Eat what you get. That’s the same attitude I get from my toaster.

Question.  Wednesday May 17th.

Today is (among many others)  National Work From Home Day.

Is working from home an option for you?  And if so did you work from home today?

As a follow up, today is also National Pinot Grigio Day.  Coincidence? Or was it all part of the plan?

Home IS work.  I'm here every day, 7 days a week,  except when I have to go out and get stuff to do more work at home.

I rarely get to a game store unless I have something specific I'm looking to buy.

Yes, since 2022 my employer has had a hybrid work from home policy in place. We can work from home up to 24 hours a week, provided we have a position that allows for that. The other 16 hours has to be in the office, field, or a meeting somewhere. I'm working from home right now, but will be going into the office the last couple of hours of the day to pick up my work truck and some other gear and to make sure our interns have enough work to do. Other than the occasional couple of hours here and there I don't expect to be back in the office for a full day until the end of June. Longer if there are any problems at my restoration sites this year.

I'd say the overlap with Pinot Grigio Day is a coincidence. But the former head of my division probably would have said every work from home day is also "drink wine all day" day. She messed up quite a few times early in the pandemic by grabbing a full wine glass and taking a sip while on conference calls. Thankfully she was transferred to a "research position" in the last few weeks. Which is what the administration does with people they no longer want in leadership positions but are worried about publicity associated with firing a public persona. Good riddance, place runs better without a lush running it.

Working from home is an option but not for my current project.  I am not working from home today.

Follow up Happy Coincidence...?

I have the day off today, so I'm planning to do as little work as possible. I wish I could wash trailers from home, but the water pressure to do that would be like hitting them with a missile.

No, I'm retired.  if you were to say Today is National Work on Home Day . now that is an option. or Today is National Work on Vacation Day. I would be right there.

As a live-in carer I guess I do technically work from home.

Couldn't do it with a "normal job" though, the temptation to goof off all the time would be too strong!
