Depends, but I usually go with white or light grey since I want brighter colour on my figures. Most of the time if I start with black it's for a quickie drybrush and highlights paint job to just get something on the table, or it's terrain.

I use my air brush to prime in black, than add white from above to get a zenithal shading of the model.

It depends on the color scheme I have in mind for the figure; lighter gets white, darker gets black, gray for anything I'm not sure about.

In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? None, I use silver for my space marines. In the rare instances where I'm not using metallics, I use a white or light primer since that's what works with my contrast paints.

I have been considering black with zenithal highlight to aid in placing highlights, but that would add step to the process that I get so little time for.
Thoramel
On 5/21/2023 at 12:53 PM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Sunday May 21st. Well it has been pouring out since before I got up this morning. What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy weekend day when you don't have any plans? If it's not storming and just raining I like to throw on the rain gear and go hiking. Even the most crowded trails around here are practically empty when it rains. And the only thing better than hanging out in the woods is hanging out in the woods when there is no one else to bother you. If it's storming out I'll just stay in and paint minis, or bake, or brew, or just nap if none of my other hobbies are calling to me. 1 hour ago, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Monday May 22nd. For something different, a painting question. In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? I prime everything black, then a heavy drybrush of grey followed by a light drybrushing of white. My eyes aren't the best anymore and this allows me to see all the details I wouldn't be able to see with just a single color, and it's kind of like zenithal priming in that I can see where the highlights should generally be painted. I'm not winning any awards with this method, but it lets me crank out the tabletop stuff at a pretty good rate. The only change to this is when I'm painting something that's going to be mostly metallic, then it's just black primer and nothing else.
ManvsMini
1 hour ago, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Monday May 22nd. For something different, a painting question. In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? I try to prime my minis in a color that the miniature isn't i.e. if it is black plastic, I go with grey or white, if grey plastic, white or black, and so forth. This way I can make sure I get total primer coverage. I tend to go for grey primer if the casting color isn't an obstacle. I find it's easier on my eyes to see all the details. No need to zenithal prime with grey. White tends to hurt my eyes under the lights, and black can be too shiny under the lights. I've tried black primer with a white zenithal, and while I can see the details, I don't photograph and the zenithal gets covered by the base coat. For mass/army painting, I go with black and deal with the shine until everything gets base coated.
WhiteWulfe
3 hours ago, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Monday May 22nd. For something different, a painting question. In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? ProAcryl Dark Neutral Grey is my main primer now, so that probably answers the question in the most straightforward of ways. I'd bounced between black and grey so often that after a while I decided to try out mixing a medium-dark grey, and found that it worked well for me, doubly so once I started drybrushing a lighter colour over the top. This lets me actually make out details, but also have barebones shadows. I've tried the zenithal thing with an airbrush, but can't quite get it right, and in all honesty I prefer how things get set up for me with the prime dark neutral grey and then drybrushing two colours over that (currently playing with ProAcryl Warm Grey followed by Bright Ivory, as it provides more contrast than my previous method). It works well for me, as it helps me come u with the initial basic sketch and block in of colours, which means I don't feel like I'm fighting my minis anywhere near as much. Conveniently, it also preps minis the same for acrylic or oil paint, so that's rather handy. You could say I've chosen a hybrid of different things. Never did like pure white or off white priming, as it felt like it was scorching my retinas, and black was just too "can't see details at all". 9

In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? I tend to paint in batches rather than working on a single piece at a time. So I will prime a dozen figs or more in a sitting. Consequently, I use grey primer pretty much all the time as it is flexible enough to use on both light and dark colored paint jobs. Besides, I find it hard to pick out details on pieces that are primed in black or white. YMMV. The Egg 9

In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? If I'm doing batches or just not sure of the colour scheme, grey has always been my favorite. My Germans for Bolt Action still get grey, although it almost immediately gets covered with, well, Field Grey. If I have scheme, like all my Star Wars stuff, then I'll prime black for all the black imps, and white for all the white imps. And I've tried some reds for all the red ones, but haven't actually finished any of them yet, so may try something else eventually. For anything I'm using contrast/speedpaints on , I'll zenithal prime since it will show through.
