How are you at ignoring that shiny new thing that just arrived and instead focus on work (or what have you) until a more appropriate time to "play" with the new shiny? It seems to vary depending on what the item itself is. Thankfully I have FlexDelivery for a lot of things, and most courier companies now offer re-routing services BEFORE they attempt delivery (super handy with UPS, DHL, and FedEx), which makes it a lot easier to ignore such things while working... Once I'm home? Not going to lie, most packages are VERY difficult to ignore, and I tend to open them up to verify things, then put in their designated area afterwards, as a small place means you tend to open the box (and take photos if you wish) on the bed, and then you kind of want to be able to do the sleep thing later on, and not have to move schtuff about when you're tired and trying to sleep...

How are you at ignoring that shiny new thing that just arrived and instead focus on work (or what have you) until a more appropriate time to "play" with the new shiny? In my mind the appropriate time to play with new stuff is immediately after it arrives in the mail. I work mostly from home and don't have any set hours. So I have no problem signing off for a while and playing with anything new that arrives. 9

How are you at ignoring that shiny new thing that just arrived and instead focus on work (or what have you) until a more appropriate time to "play" with the new shiny? I'd be horrible at it if I worked from home. Luckily I work on-site, so I'm pretty good at it. Mail arrives about an hour before I have to head to work, so not much time to do anything other than open the box and confirm it's the new shiny I ordered.

Don't generally have multiperson conversations so no. I also tend to keep my snarky comment verbal to people's faces if they deserve it. On 5/20/2023 at 6:06 AM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Saturday May 20th. Have you ever ordered hobby or household items and then spend the whole time while it is enroute thinking "well, I think it will fit there...will it?"? And did they fit where initially planned, or did plans have to change? Yes, because sometimes in tight spots the measurements on items might not be totally accurate. Luckily everything fit with a minimum of messing around. On 5/21/2023 at 10:53 AM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Sunday May 21st. Well it has been pouring out since before I got up this morning. What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy weekend day when you don't have any plans? Pretty much the same thing I do in most of my spare time, read forums or books, paint, watch videos or tv shows. Maybe sleep more. Something about rainy days lets me sleep more than normal. On 5/22/2023 at 9:42 AM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Monday May 22nd. For something different, a painting question. In general, are you a white/light colour primer person, and black/dark colour primer person, or a grey/mid colour primer person? 80% or more of the time I use white primer. I prefer to use washes for shading and like my bright colours to stand out. I do occasionally use grey, brown or green primers for things that I I want to be duller. I almost never use black anymore because I hate painting lots of multiple layers to try and get a brighter colour. 5 hours ago, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Tuesday May 23rd. Usually not too bad at focusing on the more important things but some days have been lost to me playing with a new purchase. .

How are you at ignoring that shiny new thing that just arrived and instead focus on work (or what have you) until a more appropriate time to "play" with the new shiny? It really depends on how stressful life is at the moment. If things are pretty stressful, then it's very difficult. If I'm not overly stressed about anything, then it's easy. That's actually one of the reasons why I resisted "smart" phones for so long: I don't need the distraction of instant internet when I need to focus on the job.
GoldenPiggy
I'm a few days behind, so some quick answers while I have a moment: On 5/20/2023 at 7:06 AM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Saturday May 20th. Have you ever ordered hobby or household items and then spend the whole time while it is enroute thinking "well, I think it will fit there...will it?"? Sometimes things don't quite work out as intended, but that's life. On 5/21/2023 at 11:53 AM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Sunday May 21st. Well it has been pouring out since before I got up this morning. What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy weekend day when you don't have any plans? Most of the time I would rather stay in anyway, so the rain makes little difference. I like watching the rain, though. On a rainy day a board game, a puzzle, playing a video game, reading a book, or painting miniatures are some of the things I might do more often if I had the spare time. I started with gray primer on everything, but I have been experimenting with other options. I am working on learning how to match the primer with the colors I intend to use, but basic gray is my default option. 23 hours ago, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question. Tuesday May 23rd. How are you at ignoring that shiny new thing that just arrived and instead focus on work (or what have you) until a more appropriate time to "play" with the new shiny? My work is mostly flexible, so I can usually take time off to play with that new toy. But I have no particular problem setting it aside and waiting if there is something else I need to do.

[…snip…] What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy weekend day when you don't have any plans? The rain thing happened today, I reacted by starting up a computer game while I listened to the rain spatter down. It lasted a good two hours. Game is ongoing. No contact with OpFor after 170+ turns. Very odd.

I don't know; I don't keep track of stuff like that well enough to know when new things are coming out. I usually hear about it either slightly before the release date, or months later.
