Never intentionally, but I have zapped myself accidently a few times in the distant past I'm sure...mostly.
Jasper_the_2nd
Question May the 4th. Shockingly, a Star Wars related question from me..... So, if you are a fan of Star Wars, what what is one thing you like the most about it? If you are not a Star Wars fan, what is one thing about it don't you like? And if you've never even watched anything Star Wars related, is there are particular reason why you haven't?

So, if you are a fan of Star Wars, what what is one thing you like the most about it? It's hard to pin down. I saws the original in the theater when I was 4 or 5. It was just THE COOLEST THING I'd ever seen. It had a cool story, lasers, ominous bad guys, daring good guys, explosions, and laser swords. In space. I'm sure that's what has led to my lifelong love of all things ci-fi and fantasy.

I was 4 years old when I saw the first one in the movie theater with my uncle (who couldn't stop laughing every time R2D2 made a sound). I believe that during the time between Last Hope and Return of the Jedi every kid my age thought absolutely everything Star Wars was just about the coolest thing ever. One thing I like about it though is how, at that age, every decent sized stick became a lightsaber and every kid with a bike had an X-Wing. What a great set of movies to grow up with for any kid with a good imagination.
GoldenPiggy
1 hour ago, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question May the 4th. Shockingly, a Star Wars related question from me..... So, if you are a fan of Star Wars, what what is one thing you like the most about it? This is tough to answer. I've always been a fan of Star Wars, but I am too young to have seen the original trilogy in theaters (I was three when Return of the Jedi was released), but old enough that the prequel trilogy came out when I was already an adult (19 for The Phantom Menace). Perhaps because of this, I find the intergenerational differences of Star Wars fans particularly fascinating, especially those silly debates about which movie was the best (the answer of course is The Empire Strikes Back, and there isn't really a debate). Since no single aspect comes to mind to answer this question, I'll instead share my unpopular opinion: the problem with the prequel trilogy is that it did not have enough Galactic Senate debates. There is a substantial political aspect to the story that never really gets adequate treatment, and the political rise of Senator Palpatine should have been developed in more detail. There is an awful lot about galactic politics that is simply not addressed, especially in the prequels, and fixing that problem would have made them much better films. Furthermore, addressing how the Star Wars universe went from (somewhat corrupt) republican principles to authoritarian dictatorship would have made the films more relevant to the state of the world, even at the time they were released, but even more so now.

Sarcastic answer about how Disney has been doing things: how Tatooine, despite being far out, in some unimportant half-forgotten region.... Has so much massive schtuff going on. Actual answer: how there are so many different types of stories that can be told that we've barely scratched the surface. The expanded universe can be quite fascinating... But yeah, lightsabers... And also how there are force inclined or force sensitive people where it manifests more in their own version of luck and intuition.

So yeah, I've been a fan of Star Wars since I first saw A New Hope, which back then would have been whenever it was first shown on TV as I wasn't old enough to go see it in the theatre. I expect I had some toys even before I first saw the whole movie. I've always like shows that have good villains, and right out of the gate you have faceless stormtroopers and then the contrast of Vader in all black with a cape . I was grabbed right there. My first posters (well that weren't F1 cars anyway) were Vader and Fett. But I think, as others have said, that they can tell so many different stories now within the universe, that there is such depth there now, to me that's just awesome.

In honor of the Toronto Maple Leafs' win on Saturday night, is there something you haven't done in a long, long, long, long time that you would like to get a chance to do again? I think maybe I'd like to have a boyfriend again. I miss having someone to do something with. My last date was 10 years ago. He was a nerdy guy: we saw the Hobbit movie and played Warhammer and D&D together. Plus I had a dedicated chauffeur and a place to crash in the city when the weather was bad. I'm going to single's conference, maybe that handsome nerd who just moved to Calgary will be there. His profile picture is in a gym wearing a NASA shirt. The girls got all uppity about his photo and complained to the mod he was a fraud. Turns out, they had him investigated and he's real. But how many of those girls is he going to want to be with? Yeah, there's a reason they're single. I was most excited about the NASA shirt.

The level of depth and maturity between them has yet to be matched, which I find pretty sad. That said, I love Star Wars and have since I saw it in theaters in 77. But I'm not a Star Wars fan, judging by most fans I know, since they seem to hate Star Wars. I don't discuss it with people, I just enjoy it purely without the cynical hate machine. 10

I'm neither a fan nor a hater. It's just a fun movie I saw when I was a kid, with a lot of bad spin-offs. I like it because it was one of the first times some effort was put into making a universe real, with effects and back story without it being a horror movie. As someone else said, there's so much possibility here. Sadly the last ~45 years most of what they've put out has been goofy or stupid.

How close have you come to accidentally eating one of those little desiccant packs that are in everything now? I have a whole drawer full of the little monsters. Thanks to those of you who have given useful tips as to what to do with them. I've never eaten one, but they come with my overseas Chinese delights. I have however, eaten plenty of things unintentionally. The funniest was the first time I had steamed buns (before I realized I'm celiac, I miss them so much!) I was in the car with dad and I had eaten half of one before I realized there was a little paper stuck to the bottom and I'd eaten that too. I laughed and told dad that I guess I was going to wipe my bum from the inside out. On 5/3/2023 at 6:03 AM, Jasper_the_2nd said: Question May 3rd. As I'm about to head off for nerve conductivity testing on my leg and foot, have you ever, intentionally or unintentionally, been shocked with electricity? By yourself or by a trained professional? I worked as an electrical assembler, and one of the videos they showed was security footage from another facility. A guy was testing a cabinet and it arced. I was not expecting that in the video and yelled an explicitive in the middle of safety training and almost fell out of the chair. I never tested the machines, you had to be an engineer to do that, but they did show us the location of the big yellow shepherd hooks all around the testing cage. I did have a pretty funny run-in with the electric fence at my farm. During the early years, there were cows and the old barbed wire fence was so shoddy they used electric to keep the cows in. One day, I went over there with a bowl of apple peelings to dump over the fence and another bucket of compost. I dumped the peelings, hung the metal bowl upside down on the post, as was my habit, and tossed the other bucket. I went to get the bowl, but unbeknowst to me it was touching the top wire. My arm shot back, and the bowl went probably 20 feet in the air with a great BING! then several other little bings! as the bowl bounced on the ground. I was surprised how much it hurt. I felt like I'd smashed the heck out of my funny bone.

It was a happy childhood thing for him, I guess. I feel the same way about Star Wars as I do about Harry Potter or a number of other things. It's not my cup of tea, but it makes a lot of people happy and is essentially harmless, so I like it for that. I watched the original trilogy once, and I think I fell asleep in the Jar Jar Binks one, but I also fell asleep in the first LotR movie. My least favorite thing about Star Wars has to be baby Yoda. Everyone thinks it's so cute and it's in every meme. I think the little guy is hideous and way overused. I haven't watched any of the new Star Wars, because Disney. Ugh. Nope, I'm a Trekkie. 22 hours ago, kristof65 said: Second shock was a minor AC shock of around 50-60V ac, but it locked me into position and my safety observer had to break me free. I probably could have broke free with out him, but I'm glad he was there. I was following a maintenance & tuning procedure (on the same model of HF transmitter) and grabbed a tuning knob with my right hand and a setting switch with my left at the same time. There was an internal short of the tuning capacitor that resulted in a voltage potential between the metal knob of the tuner and any grounded component, such as a switch. Because the voltage path crossed my heart, I had to spend a few hours under observation in Medical for that one, but at least it wasn't overnight. I remember being told of a story about an electrician who thought it was funny to pretend to be electricuted to his new apprentices. One time he did it, and the apprentice flipped out, grabbed a 2x4 and totally dropped the guy. He never did that joke again.

I was too small to see the original in theater and nobody would take me to the next two. The music, the costumes, special effects and the story were great. I was never fanatical about the original trilogy but still consider them some of my favourite movies. Sadly the prequels didn't live up to the originals and the last trilogy was very disappointing. I enjoy some of the other things in the Star Wars universe but nothing has ever brought back the feeling of the original for me.

Yeah I don't understand the hate thing amongst the "fans". There are parts I like better and parts I thought weren't awesome, but I don't hate any of it. What is the point? Sure I'm not a fan of Jar Jar (the Darth Jar Jar theory on the other hand....) but he didn't "ruin" Star Wars for me. Nothing can ruin Star Wars for me unless I let it, and that isn't going to happen. 11
