Getting to Know You - September Edition

I can be a passenger quite happily, depending on the road.  I get motion sick easily.  I can drive those same roads fine.

I can't be in a car with someone under the influence of anything, or a smoker.  Former I'm worried, latter I literally can't breathe without choking.

Question September 5: When you drive somewhere do you prefer to be the driver or the passenger? Is there anyone you refuse to be a passenger with and why?

I drive for a living, so I'm in control behind the wheel. I rarely get to be the passenger, and I prefer it that way.

Now that I have a GPS unit, I prefer to be the driver.  Before,  in areas I didn't know,  I preferred to let another do the driving. But I can be a passenger,  too.

Alright, let's get this started...

Question September 1: What your favorite thing about traveling? What's your least favorite thing about it?

To be clear I'm referring to long distance travel, like going on vacation to Reapercon.

1. I love those moments in transit where you're in the arms of the plan, and you can just watch the scenery and anticipate the adventure.

2. I hate the anxiety of packing, the mechanics of mass transport and the frustrations of not having all of my... 'stuff.'

It's a three day weekend here in the Us, so I'm going to go ahead and post the next few days of questions all at once.

Question September 2: Are there any festivals that are local to you that you enjoy going to? If so, describe one for us.

Question September 3: What's your favorite thing to do on a lazy Sunday (or any day) when you have no other responsibilities?

Question September 4: It's Labor Day here in the US, a day to celebrate the contributions of the workforce to society. What's something you'd like to see celebrated as a national holiday?

Bonus: Show us a hobby project you've been working on recently.

2. Nope, but I'm going to try DiceFest next month!

3. Work on the house, work in my shop, paint minis, watch Geoff paint minis, catch a Seahawks game (tv), fire up the smoker...

4. National "use your go*d*mned turn signal day"

I usually prefer to drive, but I'm not that form of control freak - I can enjoy being a passenger.  I don't really hang with anyone that I'm not willing to ride with, although Mom is getting up in years and I think she's getting a little less sound behind the wheel...

Question September 6: What is your favorite home cooked meal. Either your home or someone else's. Is it something you can cook on your own, or do you have to wait until someone else makes it for you?

Con on the Cob and Mincemeat Pie.  I make both.

Corn on the Cob done the best way is heat in the microwave for two minutes.  Much better than boiling like I grew up having and better to not heat up the house by broiling in the oven.  Broiling is almost as good, but the microwave cooks it better and faster.

A nice big turkey dinner is my favorite meal. I've never made the whole thing by myself, but I think I know how to make pretty much all the parts by now.

I saw this question, and I wasn't sure if I could name a single favorite.  Then I saw this answer:

...and I decided I would go with a full Thanksgiving dinner.  I do have to make it myself, as my wife won't cook a turkey, and doesn't particularly like Thanksgiving, though it has always been my favorite holiday.  I pretty much cook everything myself, though my oldest daughter likes to help with the appetizers.  It takes up five or six hours of my holiday in total, but I love making it, I love watching my family eat it, and I kind of like eating it too.

So many choices....  @Jasper_the_2nd hit one of them, turkey dinner with all the fixings, or a simple roast chicken with gravy and sides.  Then there's BBQ, and several of our local places do a very nice dinner plate with a variety of meats and sides.  I also love a New England Boiled Dinner on a cold day.

I can cook all of it, but I'm happy to let someone else do it, or pick up the BBQ on my way home.

I'm usually the driver. I wouldn't mind someone else driving if they have experience. Haven't been in a car with someone reckless or unaware of the road yet. I do get miss out on all the pretty scenery when doing road trips.

Beef stew.  It's tasty, it's delicious, and it could probably double as mortar by bricklayers for how thick I typically make it...

I have my mom's recipe for chili, and I enjoy making it. Haven't had it for awhile, I'll have to whip up a pot sometime.

That's very hard to choose....I love Asian Food, Greek/Turkish Food, Italian Food etc etc. and it depends on my mood/craving of that moment.

I will do a top 3!

  • Boerenkool Stamppot met Worst ( Kale with Mashed Potatoes, Bacon, Smoked Sausage and Mustard)
  • Rijsttafel ( Dutch/Indonesian invention) One eats Nasi Goreng with lots and lots of small dishes on the side, like Satey, Javaanse Boontjes, Prawn Crackers, Gado Gado etc etc.
  • Tapas/Mezze/Antipasti ( Spanish/Greek/Italian fingerfood, just fill the table with lots of small portions of different food)

Since I'm a hobby chef, yes I can make it myself.

Turkey-Dressing/Stuffing-Cranberry Sauce-and all those other trimmings.

In short: (Grandmothers) Christmas or Thanksgiving Dinner.

My grandparents, parents, and Aunt, have all passed so…

I’ll most likely never have such a meal again in my lifetime, because I can’t cook like they could and nobody else that I know is likely to try.
