Questions on "Freelance"

Recommended Posts

Strictly speaking, a Merc company is a company made of models described in the rulebook as belonging to the Merc Faction, where a freelance company consists of models from more than 1 Faction (The Data Cards whould have different Faction Icons) OR a freelance company features a new faction - Proxied up Arachno-Assassins from DHL, frex. (Or some combination of the 2.)

I know at least one person has a freelance company using our L5R minis and our various asian-themed DHL models . . .

Which just begs this thread to become a "What factions would you invent using DHL minis" thread . .

what have I done . . .

Will there be models made for grunts in the merc faction?

Yep.

There are already the Sisters of the Blade. And maybe the beastmen (unless those are Reven...can't remember).

Also, there are supposed to be three more sets of mercenary grunts coming in a few months...somewhere around model 14150 or so. Archers, breakers, etc.

According to the Warlord rulebook:

"Technically, the Mercenaries Data Cards are not really an Army. They're for use in Freelance Fighting Companies to help those players flesh out their forces."

To me this implies that any fighting company that is not one of the established factions is "freelance" and may employ models from the Merc data cards and/or models from DHL, etc. The mercenaries then are not a true faction in the sense that dwarves/elves are but may be used by any faction in campaign play and freelance companies in general.

well as bryan said the merc co, only uses models from the "merc" faction and will get the merc special ability, whereas a freelance company would be something like say an army comprised of dwarves elves and crusaders and would get no army special because it is comprised of models from more than one army, or an army made of other figures (dhl, exalted, et al) using the generic army in the back of the book to create your own force (still w/o army specials as it is not one of the established book armys)

hope that makes it alittle clearer

Sisters of the Blade are adepts as are Lupine Ragers. The data for grunts is generic. Beastmen are Reven. I'll look on the Alliance site for the #s you mentioned.

Thanks!

Mercs aren't an army as the book says so there is no such thing as a merc army faction. However if ya make a freelance army using only figs from the merc stats list you get the scoundrel's luck and change of hearts bonuses ("as if it were it's own army"). Other freelance armies do not get these bonuses but they are all freelance. Just to clarify because what Bryan wrote and the book sound a little different. Does that sound right Bryan?

Well, the book is technically right - it is impossible to have a Merc Army Faction (Who would be paying them). However, it is possible to field an All Merc-Symbol-on-the-halo army, and get mercenary abilities. There is another way to claim that ability, but that's been covered.

A freelance company is a mix-n-match, and a Merc Co is kind of - In a way there is no difference, in a way there is. Definitely if you made a Highlander Army it would be a freelance, (unless Orba Sinhan was your Warlord . . . then it would be Merc.)

I guess The technical distinction is that a Merc Company uses Orba Sinhan's Data Card, otherwise, it is freelance . . .
