nadinbrzezinski
Company sized engagement we were done in less than an hour, ok, hour and a half with setup and cleanup included... lots of fun. :D Nadin
smokingwreckage
Nice. SOunds like a smooth-playing game. Some hardcore simulationists I've heard don't like some aspects of the rules, but even they have other aspects they really enjoy. How many figures were you playing with, maybe you could give us a run-down on the forces and what you'd say were the relative strengths and weaknesses of each side? nadinbrzezinski
We had 12 models each... one side had four dictators, one rhino, two challengers, two wraits, one Vanquisher and for the life of me I cannot remember the last two. I ran one Rhino, two wraiths, one lance, three infantry stands with a panther attached (and mortars), a starhawk five, one dictator, one gladiatior and a scorpion. On the plusses, my oponent had a very high hard target killing unit and I had a good mix, given the mortar crews. The tanks as usual are underestimated by most folks, and they are just plain nasty. They worked well for all that I did. Initiative kept going back and forth and we just kept pounding each other. Within four turns my oponent had lost oh... seven models and I had lost three... we decided to call it since he had to go to work. One weakness for both sides, given the size of the table, were the Rhinos. They are very slow so it takes a while for them to get into the action. Now it was also a city fight with narrow streets, which meant that the mortar crews were a tad more effective than usual... since they were able to rain death and destruction on up to two models at a time. Now to the comment about hard core simulationists... I have met them... and my answer to that is all games have their plus and minuses. What I like about CAV is speed of game play. I mean my oponent had never played. Now anybody willing to do the math, the forces were NOT balanced by point value. We literally went, ok... lets choose units and go at it. We did not care for that and it was a blast... and a good game. Though one last thing, when the Rhinos got into the action things well die very fast. Though we were surprised that a Challenger actually survived being shot at by a Rhino at very close range... I was rolling badly... I guess, or my Weapons Officer was asleep on the job. :D Nadin
Leech
Yeah don't you just hate it when those bleep lazy wizzos fall asleep and forget to compensate for angles and stuff :o) Nadin, if you were in a city how comes it took the Rhinos so long to get up there?? I mean, 16MM of movement isn't blinding speed but it should allow the Rhino to advance with the next slowest in the unit....
nadinbrzezinski
Rhinos still move at 8 mm frank... at least that is what my copy of the JoR said...and just checked still says. :p Still we had fun, and it was good to do this. Also we went lenght wise not from side to side. Nadin
Leech
Road movement...... The Rhino has 8MM but the movement modifier on Roads is 2x which makes 16MM. Unless you were playing in the only city I know of without any roads or paved surfaces! :o)
nadinbrzezinski
Yeah but we chose to ignore that little fact... mostly for one simple reason, this was my oponents first game and he wanted to stay away from as many mods as he could... Leech
Aside from crew mods and the optional rules, I try to not cut out any rules when doing demos. I think all of the rules add to the game. I might not set the first battle in a particular environment so I don't have to go into them too much or they don't cause too many problems but if a newbie asked for a city fight - they'd get a city fight. And in cities, Rhinos rule! :o)
nadinbrzezinski
I asked and it was not strictly a demo, since he is a good friend of mine from the days of Tech... and he plays many games. he said I want a city fight but for the moment lets do this with no terrain modifiers since I only want to deal with the TL and ECM and that. I said fine... be aware that... Next battle we will use all the modifiers per request. Nadin
Leech
Oh right. I had a couple of guys ask the same thing - one time was at ConClave Scotland this year.
