Astral Rogue
I have a friend who wants to play and asked me what a good size and composition for a normal game. So I'm asking you guys for your thoughts on what a good 3 section force would be for starters.. Thanks Neil
Leech
Assuming you mean 3 sections of CAV's and also assuming you'll want stuff that's out (or close), I'd sugegst the following: 1st Section Dictator Wight Duelist Gladiator/Wraith 2nd Section Starhawk Knight Challenger Ghost 3rd Section Kahn/Talon Sovereign Sovereign Specter/Sovereign Hope this helps. bent brush
My Suggestions. Blitzing 4 Khan they are (censored) against soft and hard targets and they are fairly hard to hit. Support 2 Sovereign, Indirect fire of 60 and 48 inch Missile Packs, how can you say no. 2 Specter, No longer just 1 attempt at chain lock now you have two. This force has some unpleasant defensive (for the enemy) fire and excellent Direct fire offensive capabilities Superiority 2 Scorpion A level 1 nightmare, use of cover and speed for these two to be effective. 2 Gladiator II's the heavy with the best weapons system around. smokingwreckage
What about 1 section? I'm curious, and can no WAY afford to start with 3 sections.
Leech
Okay SW, here's Frank's Faves for a single section starter army. Dictator Starhawk Regent Scorpion Here's the reasons... :o) Firstly, the Dictator is a reasonably capable CAV and it is the poster boy. And let's face it, you'll have to look a long way to find a CAV that can put out a pair of +9's (w/ TL) AND move 20 a turn. It ain't great at taking damage but it should be able to hurt anything short of a Rhino and not sweat the defensive fire. The Wight is as good, but not as 'posterboy' :o) The Starhawk is a very capable design which has good speed and good staying power. Again, you'll have to go a long way to find a better CAV, although if you'd rather IF over armour, try a Challenger. The Regent is a capable Fire CAV with good speed (all these have 20+) and armour. It suffers a tad from lack of range compared to the Sovereign but it does have 33% more armour and 33% more speed. It's a personal choice. And lastly the Scorpion... it's here simply because it's a tough little bastard!! With 6DT's it's one of a handful that can take a pounding. Combine that with good speed, a nice gun and the multi-legged chassis (say goodbye to difficult terrain modifiers :o)) you have a very capable CAV. However, if you'd like something a little more spectacular in terms of shooting, how about: Duelist Warlord/Gladiator Sovereign Rhino or Ogre. The reason for this is the Duelist can throw +9's as well as the Dictator but is tougher by +1 armour and a DT, which can prove very important in combat. The Gladiator/Warlord can put out +8's or +9's as well and are both very capable designs. I personally prefer the Gladiator, but the Warlord may well end up piping it's older brother in the end (the model's far better). The Sovereign makes an appearance simply because it can hit hard, it tougher than the Specter and has that massive range to boot, which is hard to counter without a Sovereign if your own. Then there's the supers... the Rhino can throw a pair of +11's with gusto (and the CAD resculpt looks #### fine) and the Ogre can throw a trio of +9's. Of course, I think the best thing to do is to look at the models and decide which ones you'd like to paint. You can deicde section organisation later :o) Hope this helps. smokingwreckage
E-e-excellent, you've quickly addressed both firepower/manouvre and the all important "oooh, looks cool" factors.
Astral Rogue
thanks Frank, and BB, helped me get another convert :D to the growing ranks of CAV. Neil
Leech
Ah, another convert. CAV's power grows with every day.... soon it shall take over the world... Or should that be overtake the world (of mecha gaming) :o)
NymMoondown
I was thinking of making an "oh sweet look at that big robot" army. i chose an "oh sweet look at that big robot" army because i have no idea how to play, and no one in cambridge would play CAV because cambridge is home the the typical homophobic, white-trash, racist, gun totin', beer swillin', soccer mom, cow boy hat wearin' town on the face of the earth. (as you can see, i've had troubles with the local trendy cliques at my school.... i hate this town )
