I like your ideas, but I would also like to see the painting books combined into one and sold, hopefully with the mini's. A learn to paint kit without the paint as it were. Advanced users already have paints and for some buying more paint, however good, is a turn off. Advanced users I think would just be happy with a good book(s). (and who wouldn't want more mini's....)

Okay this is where I would put my 2 cents in as well. The ideas for the instructions in the LTPKs are great. Including everything you need to know about the different techniques and how to use them and when to use them is terrific information. I can follow instructions but always do better after having seen the technique in action. My wife said that the four figures I did right after the RAC where probably the best I had ever done. A CD option is a good idea as well and an option that is not terribly expensive.

A book is the way to go. The best thing GW ever did was publish books on painting and scenary building and when the employees at the store point me at beginning painter those are the two books I recommend. The ten or so pages in the Warlord book are great, expand that and publish a painting guide like GWs and you will be able to go for the shotgun effect and reach a lot more people. With Anne at the helm I know that Reaper could produce a book every bit as good, if not better, than the GW one and its something that people are asking for all the time.

Rackham is trying to do it in their Cry Havoc publication and the step by step instructions are nice except they are seriously lacking in translation skills or are assuming a higher level of understanding from their readers than most of us have.

So there is the challenge Ann, write the instructions for the kits, use those as the stepping stone for the creation of the Reaper Painting Guide (RPG, ) come visit Denver in February for Genghis Con and show us what you have.

I'd like to make another suggestion.

Make the LPKs a little cheaper, and not include the paints.

Wait. Hear me out. When I purchased one of my LPKs, the kit had been sitting on the shelf for so long the paints were the consistency of wet plaster, and about as gritty as sand. There was no saving these paints (I tried). This was before I knew the Customer Service policies of Reaper. If that happened to me, a forum regular even then, imagine the reaction of someone completely new to the hobby, or even an experienced painter trying Reaper for the first time?

Instead of including the paints, have a "Paint Shopping List" printed on the outside of the box. Suggest the paints to pick up and this way if they want to go with a different color scheme, they can (especially for the experienced painters). Sell the instructions, minis, and brushes, and you can more readily hit both the beginners as well as the experienced, and by bringing the cost down a bit, they will more likely move from the shelves a little faster.

And having special edition minis in the LPKs would just sweeten the deal.

And having them on CD in printable format? Yeah, that would be sweet. That way if someone were to spill black primer over that all important "How to blend NMM" sheet, they could just print out a new one. :;):

Okie...sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread, folks. I really appreciate the input!! ::):

Okie, there are three things you addressed that I wanted to touch on with responses, and then I really *do* have to get back to work!

1. Video/DVD. This has been kicked around for so many years in so many circles that it's inevitable that someone will do it eventually. I'm known for hating to have my ugly mugg photographed, but who knows. At this time I know of no concrete plans to do a video. Really. :;):

2. LTPK3 Paintronomicon (lol, btw!): Yes, LTPK III originally had a LOT of material that had to be cut, because pictures are almost always better than me blathering on about who-knows-what. ::D: For instance, I just couldn't fit the SENMM/Chrome technique section in. Or the shaded metallics. Or or or...which leads me to:

3) Reaper maybe possibly you-never-know might have a painting book already in the works. Yes, a real, live, full color, hardbound, actual bookety-book, allllll about how to paint. Everything from prepping the mini to materials to simple conversions to painting basics to advanced to ultra-advanced (painting for competition, display/diorama bases, etc...), and everything I had to leave out of LTPK3. In short, I'll finally have enough room to blather on about everything I ever knew about this hobby. Be very afraid. ::D: This is *very* tentatively scheduled for Oct/Nov (i.e. about the time of the next Artists' Conference if we do another one). Very tentative. Extremely tentative. In fact, you can't trust anything I say on this subject, because in order to work on it I'll have to get my butt off of these discussion boards...

Hmmm. Better do that, then. :;): Ciao, have fun everybody!

So buying that book next October/November. I'll hunt down the Customs Agents to make sure it gets out on time if I need to. That sounds wonderful Anne!!! As much as I love your input here...DO THE BOOK!!!

Actually, do the book and post here. Sleep is highly overrated.

You could always have the video done, and have someone digitally edit your mug into something else too. Like a mug even...with a Reaper Logo. ::D:

It will make a great Birthday present for both me and my nephew, who had his first painting lesson on Monday. He spent 3 hours painting and then asked if I could bring him to my FLGS so he could pick out some figures to work on later!!!

Anne,

Doing a video doesnt mean you have to have your face in it at all.

Just set the camera up to focus over your shoulder or from a sideways shot focusing on the mini. I'd suggest using 2 cameras from different angles that you can edit and splice for the final video (so that you can paint normal and not sit like a statue while painting, just switch to whichever camera has the best shot.

Plus, I like the idea that you could do "snippets", not necessarily a full length feature film type video.

There are several Maromedia Flash type products out that you could use to create web video (or video to put on dvd) where a user could click on the topic that they wanted to see the video on, and it would play that snippet.

You wouldn't even necessarily have to have sound in your videos. You could still set it up in electronic book form with the adjoining videos playing in a window beside it. So, your computer screen would have 3-4 areas in it, one area showing what colors are being used in the current instruction, one area containing your written description of what is going on, the video, and the navigation links area to stop, start over, skip to the next, etc...

With DVDs obviously being able to hold a couple of hours worth of footage, and only really needing like 30 seconds to 2 minute for each snippet, you could probably fit all 3 kits into one DVD offering.

Heck with the Macromedia products availble, you could put them on this site and offer them as webcasts...

I'm looking forward to the next LTP kit. I bought the first two in 2003, and tought myself how to paint from them and the painting guides on this website. Other than that, I had no outside influence until I discovered GW in '04. That fact alone shows how useful even that little material can be. A book on it would be great. I've been considering buying the GW one, but I think I'll definitely wait for the Reaper version now that I know it's coming out ::D:
