PIN Number and ATM Machine

I've noticed that many people say "PIN Number" and "ATM Machine" and I wonder what they think the "N" and "M" stand for. Have the acronyms morphed into some kind of partially redundant nouns? Please let me point out that this is not a "peeve" nor a "pet" merely a curiousity.

The Government is the worst case of this.

ISRP-SP (Integrated Submission Remittance Processing - Submission Processing)

ISRP-RP (Integrated Submission Remittance Processing - Remittance Processing)

Strangely enough, these are two parts of Data Conversion that do seperate duties that are similar, if that makes sense.

Then there is the entire acronym...

AUSC_SP_ISRP-SP (Austin Service Center Submission Processing Integrated Submission Remittance Processing Submission Processing)
