NymMoondown
so what is CAV other than a table top robot game? i gather its in the adonese world right? and its done on hex terrain. other that that im lost.
Leech
Hey Nym, welcome to CAV land :o) CAV uses a sliding scale damage system. This means that each unit can take a finite number of damage points before it dies. The thing that makes Damage Tracks different from wounds/hit points is that as you take damage your stats decrease. Which means a unit thats one Track from death isn't as effective as a unit that's fresh. CAV is a combined arms game, and the simple rules system allows for large scale games. I've played company level engagements and even some slightly larger and we managed to finish the game in a reasonable time (say one afternoon). Infantry, gunships and tanks are all the equal of the CAV. This is something other sci-fi games haven't had, they always had a 'king of the battlefield' unit which was #### hard to kill by anything aside from themselves. In CAV, a gunship can kill a CAV, or infantry can or even armour. It's a matter of picking and chosing what you bring based on their abilities on the battlefield. CAV also has models which are made using rapid prototyping technology. This means the CAV's are made with computer precision thanks to the wonders of CAD :o) CAV uses some of the same names for things, Adon being one of them. However, there are no similarities between the world in Reaper's fantasy line. Least I think that's what was the answer when that was asked before :o)
Chrome
i gather its in the adonese world right?Adon is just one of the worlds in CAV. There's a little less than 200 solar systems in the CAV galaxy, and that's with Reaper only unveiling a fourth of the planned game world to us so far. If you want to learn more about CAV, you should check out the official website: http://www.cavhq.com There's a good amount of info there, including some fluff about the different factions and the technology that they use in the Galaxy section. And the From CAD to CAV page covers the rapid prototyping process that Frank mentioned.
NymMoondown
ok my cav shopping list for my "oh that looks cool" army is as follows; Wraith Scorpion Specter Starhawk1 Vanquisher Kahn along with some plains and some soldiers with mortars
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted January 7, 2003 Moderator Share Posted January 7, 2003 Looks nifty. I'd switch out that Vanq for a Puma or Knight, though.
NymMoondown
is that the normal size of the army?
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted January 7, 2003 Moderator Share Posted January 7, 2003 With the Puma instead of the Vanquisher, and no upgrades of any kind, that's 1643 points. With upgrades, you could easily crest 2000 points, which is the smallest I generally like to play.
Chrome
There really is no "standard" army. Each model in the game has a point value that estimates its overall offensive and defensive capabilities. When you want to play someone, you pick a point size for your armies (2000-3000 is considered starter-size) and pick and choose models that get you close to that point total, without going over. The size that you and your opponent choose is really only limited by the number of models you have (or are willing to proxy), the size of your table/board and the length of time you can play. Leech
Nym, a standard army is whatever you want to shoehorn into the points. The CAV rules to state that an army is organised into Sections (read squad) of 4 and that only one Section in an army may be less than 4. So when we pick armies we think in 4's... what 4 work well together etc. WraithScorpion Specter Starhawk Vanquisher Kahn I applaud your choice of units, they are some of the finest we have :o) But I'd recommend you lose the Vanquisher and put in a Knight instead. Then I'd organise them along these lines: Scorpion Wraith Dictator/Wight Rhino/Duelist Knight Kahn Starhawk Specter That gives you two CAV sections, one which can handle most other CAV's and another which can handle pretty much anything, but rocks against infantry. I'd also recommend something like a Talon to lead your infantry, although that's not nessecary :o) The Dictator I'd recommend because it is the poster boy and a capable unit (the Wight is the same, but not the poster boy) and the Rhino (especially the new one out next month) really does rock and is a huge chunk of metal. And if not, then either could be the Duelist which I think is one of the best out right now. This can be made into a 4000 point force fairly easily, especially if you include the Rhino, which is what I'd consider an average size (takes about 4 hours to play a 4k vs 4k). Leech
Nym, try e-mailing Kaimaster ([email protected]). He lives in MN and would probably be the best person to help you out with that.
NymMoondown
ok. i checked the online store and the are about 9 bucks a pop. <rambling> If these things weren't so friggen 'uge, i'd say i was paying EE prices. but that would mean $9 for a tiny, multi part, cartoonish looking dwarf with huge hands... </rambling>
KaiMaster
I have sent an email to ya... I live in Burnsville and after the Christmas break/buying a new house I am ready to rock and roll. I forgot all about ReCon on the 18th of January. It is unfortunately not well advertised, Jeneki mentioned it to me but Con of the North and MarsCon are all in February... But don't fret, since ReCon offers open gaming I am sure that I can get some last minute events setup with the ReCon folks. When it's all setup I'll post to that effect in the "Black Lightning strike event" forum (and I'll send ya an email too).

Moderator Froggy the Great Posted January 9, 2003 Moderator Share Posted January 9, 2003 Or if not "Realistic", certainly "Playable" and "Doesn't Break the Suspension of Disbelief by Too Many Stupid Blatantly Unrealistic Things".
