This is not always possible but try to use as much natural light as possible. If you can set up the pic outside and take it there. Unless you are looking for a diarama, prop up a piece of paper behind the figure so the colors will stand out.

The more evenly-lit the model is, the less distracting shadows there will be. Try lighting your models from forward-left, forward-right and from above-slightly-to-the-rear. This ought to eliminate shadows almost completely.

 

Diffusing the light is good too. This can be done cheaply with a swatch of waxed paper or thin tracing paper. Less glare is better, especially if you use metallics.
