deflagratio Posted January 14, 2005 Share Posted January 14, 2005 Have any of yall seen Pirates of the Spanish Main. Its a game made by WizKids. Its 17th century naval combat in the Carribean Iles. It's very very easy to play. A regular 30-50 point game runs anywhere from 30min to an hour. The ships are made from the same plastic credit cards are made of. A ship is printed on about 2 or 3 of them and the parts punch out and snap together. We have weekly tournaments at my FLG. This is something to look at for a RAGE naval combat. It already has quick and easy play. A possible suggestion about boarding. If you do not wish to play out the boarding ships could have Crew Attack, Crew Defense, and Crew Number. To board a ship come in contact with it, declare how many crewmembers are boarding. Once you board you make as many attack roles as crewmembers boarded. Then the defending crew have their round. Remove casualties from each ship's stats. If all the crew on one ship is killed then the ship is captured or sunk or whatever. But if the attackers did not kill them all then they are repelled, which causes the attacking ship to drift to the side a short distance (to simulate releasing all the grappling hooks and whatnot) Well there's my two cents. The one closest to my "flightpath" looked like the Mayflower. I'll get back there one of these days to see who makes them, what types are available and what scale they are. SaintRigger Posted August 30, 2005 Share Posted August 30, 2005 Hmm.. I agree - 1/60 is a bad scale for naval battles unless you are playing on a gym floor. If you are going to play boarding actions - you don't really need the naval portion of it - just two ships together, which can be done in a number of ways. 1/1200 is a decent size for napoleonic era and 1/2400 for WWI and WWII era naval battles. Sorry. i fornicate unlawfully with the female teenage offspring of Collectible Gamer producers, then stuff their heads and put them on their parent's walls. to he11 with collectible crap. my idea of collectible is a set of 100 you can chose to buy from, not a random assortment BS deal where the thing i really want is an uber rare that will take me 4 boxes of random crap to get. that us why i spend 30 bucks on the net for some crappy card whose art i like. might as well shell out 3x that and approach the artist. Part II: w/o my issues: I think a lot of us are closet historical players. Closet my hind! i am starved for historical games in a fantasy/sci-fi environ. especially with my old game group who think military campaign means total lack of will and historical game means play by the script only please! I LOVE HISTORY! and i love hangin' with the historical gamers. and we have free minds too thank you! plus, we Historites are smarter. we do research. natural brain workouts. My first contact with wargaming displayed Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and History wargaming side-by-side. guess which one i found wierd, and which one i dove at? fantasy was a recent (1998+) interest of mine....i like my MG's, thank ya. They're marketed by Heritage Mint and there's an official website for them: Heritage Mint Ship Models and Nautical Decor Merchandise The ones I saw were of the 22" series and were on special at Ingles for about $28 each. A quick check of the ship Passat shows the scale to be about 1/175th scale for that particular ship...the HMS Bounty and the Mayflower would be about 1/50th scale, which would make them more useful to gamers. The Belem is 1/88th scale but looks smaller than that, judging from the features (I saw this ship in the store). The Cutty Sark is 1/115th, another model that may or may not be useful. I'm working on battalion through army level game, ideally for RotD in the long run. Has anyone else looked at the land version of this idea?
