Wotc's loss is reapers gain...

As an aside, from my days as a pro wrestler/referee, I never understood the bad blood between companies anyway.  A lot of the same wrestlers would go back and forth between feds, so putting down a fed (and by association, their stars) would only make you look foolish if they ever came to work for you.  When I worked for a candy and cigarette distributor it was just as bad though.  My boss actually wanted me to threaten the people working for the competition!  But the same thing, the salespeople would often switch companies.  How you went to the same stores and said "I know last week I said these guys were horrible, but now I want you to buy from them" I don't know.  Not to mention if I had actually threatened someone and then had to work with them...

wow, a pro wrestler, and you sold candy. thats like my entire lifes todo list!!!!!

Candy and cigarettes? That's an odd combo...

I used to be a photographer for a wanna-be-pro local wrestling group. I quit when the person organizing the whole thing wouldn't pay me.

I kept the pictures as well.

Actually candy and cigarettes (along with beer) are staples of convenience stores.  It was a great job except for the company that I worked for.

That's a big problem with indy feds and a big reason why I left the biz.  I have a couple feds that are being set up by wrestlers that I've worked with in the past that are calling me to come back though.  It IS addicting (I love the boos from the crowd).  Sadly I don't have that many action pics of me, but here's me and Chris Candido from a show I did a couple months ago (I'm mainly a ref now):

I got paid way less than I was supposed to for that show, but at least I got paid.  If you saw the place that show was held you would have been happy to get paid anything also...

The only really big name person we had was an ex-Dallas Cowboy football player. I don't even know if any of those guys made it beyond the local poor area rec center biz. Most of them weren't muscular anyway, but tended towards the "beer belly" syndrome thing.

And oh, the things they'd do to themselves to put on a show...

*sigh*

Good times. I just wish I had gotten paid for being one of the few people who could get up on the ring and on the ropes during the matches. I got some great shots but at a risk of being tossed off several times, as well nearly hit a couple of times.

Yes, that is me in the glasses.  I did say I was a ref now.  Being a ref is a lot easier on the body and lets you keep working up the heat from the crowd.  Also pays better than being a no-name wrestler.  More fun than jobbing (throwing the match) too.  I'm not big enough to be a heavyweight and I'm not insane enough to be a high-flyer (and I'm not stupid enough to be hardcore).

I really wish I had the video or at least a pic from that show when Sonny/Tammy Lynn Sytch slapped me.  The crowd went WILD!  It was awesome.  I love that...

Unfortunately Aryanuns and my experience is not uncommon.  People start up feds and think they are the next Vince and are going to be raking in the cash.  After losing money on a couple shows they suddenly get very tight with the cash.  It's worse in NY with our Athletic Commission, it only adds more expenses to the operation.

What was I thinking when I spelled paid in that post?  Time to go edit...

Oh yeah, WotC loss is Reapers gain.  What's this thread about again?

It's very sad that the low end feds are like that because, even if you're not into the whole wrestling thing, it's still a blast. I was totally NOT into wrestling, but had a lot of fun in the behind the scenes stuff and during the shows. And the guys were a lot of fun, too. Even they had problems getting paid, though.

*sigh* Man, I miss those days, now. Lots of fun.

Awesome pic!! I think the smaller wrestling stuff is better than the bigger name stuff in the long run. Over here we had Portland or Northwest Wrestling, a long time ago, my uncle Jerry (RIP unk, I miss yah a lot!!) took me to a show at the armory with them, heck I was kid at the time & it was a blast, we had ringside seats & the action spilled out right in front of us, I got autographs & everything, great bunch of guys. One of the guys out the NW league was Billy Jack Haynes, he wrestling in the WWF & I think NWA.

Awile back long time bud of mine & me went to Monday Night Nitro when it was on (if you ever watch it was the epsiode where Hulk came back as red & yellow Hogan, ie the good guy image), that was a blast to see even now. The newer stuff just doesn't really syche me up as much so I rarely ever follow it, I may read it in RAW mag at work every once in awile no fan following.

Anyways glad you enjoyed your work, it's funny even thou it staged it's still a riot to watch & you really get into it sometimes.

Besides, it maybe too late to get into the random prepainted mini's.  Don't they think that ppl who originally bought MageKnight are already sick of them and have already moved onto Heroclix?

Actually, Heroclix kinda stinks as a straight battle game and needs scenarios to be tolerable. Mechwarrior isn't the end-all either with some of it's rules, so many people are going back to their old MK figs...

And I agree that if you look past the old releases and look at some of the new stuff- there are some really neat sculpts in there.

I'm having more fun playing Heroclix a couple of times a week than I've ever had playing any game on a regular basis ever.

But anyway...

I think the game will do very well for WotC/Hasbro. They didn't just pull this idea out of thin air -- people have been clamoring for cheap prepainted D&D-compatible figures for years. They're giving the people what they want, and producing it in a format that is a proven seller (random packs). I'd be very surprised if it bombs.

Chainmail II will fill a niche. Reaper fills another, smaller niche.

But I doubt I'll buy much Chainmail II, while I continue to buy more Reapers than I can paint.

HeroClix is fun, and I'll be picking up Crimson Skies Clix when it comes out.  My friends and I playtested that and it's a lot of fun.

But neither game will ever replace painting minis as a hobby of mine.  Nope.

Pre-painted quick skirmish level games have their niche, but so do skirmish to large scale miniatures wargaming with minis you get to paint.

But unless it's really amazingly revolutionary, I don't think I'll be picking up Chainmail Clix.  Once bitten twice shy.

I am looking forward to Warlord though... very curious what that will be like...

(and if Reaper is looking for any playtesters for Warlord, please contact me.)

Here-here!  As much as I love the minis and buy them obssesively, I'd love to playtest, or Demo the game!
