"Wouldn't it be so cool..."

Recommended Posts

Anybody got any amusing questions or comments that come up during demonstration games of CAV? Here's a few that routinely get me chuckling:

1. "Can my CAV fly up on top of the building?"

2. "Can I transfer extra movement from this CAV to that one?"

3. "Can my bigger CAV just step on your little CAV?"

4. "Woudn't that be so cool if my CAV could fly up on that building?" (of course, this is asked just minutes after giving a polite NO answer to question #1).

5. "Can't I just blow up the building and make it fall onto the CAV hiding behind it?"

6. "Can I just self destruct and blow up the CAV next to me?"

Other things I find amusing are watching players (usually youths) do the following:

1. Using the model's like they were toy dinosaurs with sound effects.

2. Using their fingertips to create imaginary trails of laser beams flying from one cannon into another unit.

3. Walk around the table like Mr. Roboto firing gauss cannon shots at their buddies in the store.

4. Shake the dice in their hand FOREVER before rolling them. (actually this one gets annoying after about the third time they do it... hehehe)

Spartan6... I'd agree that those would be fun variants for a game, and it probably goes without saying that they'd be "local optional" rules.

Just for poops & giggles I think I'm going to work on a jump jets rule. I honestly think the game is fine without it, but it would add a little flare to those CAV only type games. If I figure something out I'll post it.

The thing I'd like to add with building destruction is possible "splash" damage from exploding buildings, sort of like an IFM template.

Off to brainstorm.

Here's my two peso's worth.

Before the game starts decide how many DT's a building has and what it's ARM is. I suggest a ARM of zero or even negative numbers for most buildings. If a structure is caught in the AOE of an IFM just make a roll and see if it takes damage. You could do the same thing for DFM's and DF weapons too.

Most buildings wouldn't "explode" unless they contained something volatile but you could roll scatter dice to see which way it collapses.

As for jump jets maybe some single use rocket packs? My suggestion is something that couldn't be used constantly.

One other thing. If a building has less damage tracks than the CAV trying to land on it, it collapses.

I've never found the logic behind jump jets sound. We're talking about machines weighing almost 100 tons and, more importantly, about as aerodyanmic as a brick. Not to mention the amount of damage that would be caused to all teh delicate equipment on board the thing when it landed.

And even if you could get an Assassian or evan a Kahn off the ground, you would have ZERO control when the thing is in the air.

But, but, but... it works so well in my "video" game. ::D:

You're logic sounds right to me Sergei. So, I guess that leaves one solution...

Yes we can jump jet, but it's considered kamikaze attack. As soon as the CAV is in the air roll for deviation, see where it crash lands. Too funny. Hey, if you're lucky you might land on something that'll explode. How cool would that be?

SILLY, SILLY, SILLY, eh?

I've never really cared for the idea of jump jets on CAVs. Unlike Battlemech I see CAVs being more vehilces then robots. Now Battle Armor on the other hand... I want my jump troopers.

With that said a CAV (or any mecha) with Jump jet would have to be designed to use them. For example they would need air foils and wings to help guide them. Also thier knee actulators would need to be designed to take impact of landing. And don't forget that the jets themselves would still be burning slow the desent of the unit.

Someone remind me later this week (I'm out of state at the moment) to post my ahem unofficial playtest houserules for buildings and damaging them and such. I have a skyscraper that looks like the Xerox building in Rochester, and somehow, that's the first one people try to take out.

My son does this. And then instead of just dropping the dice on the table to roll them you have THROW them across the table. Makes it lots of fun to play Yahtzee with him. Glad he doesn't play Champions with me (hmmm, how far can I scatter 15d6 across the room?)

Most of the "wouldn't it be cool" type questions revolve around melee attacks.

"Can I chop the leg off that CAV, and then wield it like a club and smash in the cockpit of that other CAV?" I'm pretty sure that was an oldschool Battletech player.
