wildger
"We are planning for a deluxe starter set and army boxes. Details are still being worked out regarding contents and price but they're planned. " -------------------- ~Matt Ragan It looks like that Reaper is planning to lauch a new starter set with introduction of CAV2. As a player, what will you advise to the company about the content in the set? Remember, it has to help to boost sale. Otherwise, this game will fold. My favorite dream is ask Reaper to produce an starter combined army box for each major fraction. The rule book is separate from the army boxes but includes a promotion coupons for a large discount for the box sets. This way, for those who question about the survivability of the game, they can simply pick up and read the rulebook first and decide later. For those who are already playing the game, you can start a new army of your choice. It is a win-win situation to me. How Reaper can work around this discount issue with the retailers is beyond my understanding and I dont even know whether this is possible. The second choice is to include two opposing fractions in the set. Or, one can make the figures exclusive to the starter set. The disadvantage is that players may not like the content inside. If you include too many figures, it will be hard to keep the price down. I assume that Reaper likes to keep it at around $40. Too many games take this route and if the cost is high, new players will simply stay away. Just my two cents.
Erion
My understanding (limited though it may be) is that the starter sets will be similar in form and function to the Warlord sets. That is to say that each faction will have it's own starter set priced very reasonably (You'd save about $10 vs buying the models separately), and there will be a deluxe starter set that includes the rulebook and enough models to run one armor platoon each of two different factions. I would like to see the deluxe starter include 2 CAV's, 2 tanks and a small rifle platoon for each selected faction. That way you end up with two legal platoons per faction and that means four initiative cards instead of just two, which introduces the initiative deck system in a much more meaningful way. The Warlord deluxe starter would retail at about $110-115 if bought separately. That's a nice savings for buying the boxed set, and I would like to see CAV's deluxe starter reflect that sort of incentive. I don't think a coupon is a good idea. Heck the FLGS here offers a 10% discount just for playing a demo game. You don't even have to buy the same day. They'll give you a certificate to redeem at a later date. Chrome
I'm really not sure how CAV starter sets will work with a $40 price tag. Those of us who are experienced know how well a combined arms section can work, but most newbies are going to want CAVs, CAVs and more CAVs. I'd shoot for something closer to a $60-70 price tag and give them 4 CAVs, a pair of gunships, an APC with 3 Infantry stands and 4 fighting vehicles. All of that for $75 would be a pretty good buy. I suppose it might be too much for a few people, but it gives you a solid, flexible force for a decent amount of cash. It also allows Reaper enough models in the box to be flexible with the contents of each pack. For example, in a Ritterlich box the Gunships could be swapped out for an extra pair of tanks. In Terran boxes, the Fighting Vehicles would be traded for more gunships.
Saint of Sinners
My suggestion is 4 CAVs in the faction sets. After all that's what attracted us to the game in the first place... BIG HONKIN' BOTS with BIG HONKIN' GUNS Now for the deluxe box set I'd go with the combine arms... 2 CAVs, 2 tanks, 2 gunships, and an apc with 3 infantry. Terrans would be a must for the set and maybe the AEC or Malvernis. I would say the Rach due to the popularity of the dictator but since for fluff they're allied with the silly hairless apes it would be a lil' wonky
Chrome
Hmmm, the perfect Ritterlich starter pack. A Panther, a Mastadon and two Rhinos.
butterflytank
maby an idiots guide in the deluxe, like what magic does in the core set box.
DETHSTRYKER
2 CAVs, 2 tanks, 2 gunships, and an apc with 3 infantry Personally i would drop the 2 gunships for 2 more CAVs. Or if you have to include Gunships leave it with 4 CAVs, 2 tanks, APC w/3 infantry stands and a Gunship or something. That's just me. Then again that is how my Tomadi force is shaping up... Erion
2 Gunships do not 2 CAV's make, at least money-wise.
DETHSTRYKER
True. I just want more CAVs. I'm a newbie. What can i say?
FreeFall
Well here is what I would suggest. Two starters. CAV Starter: 4 CAVs and either 2 tanks or 2 gunships, depending on the faction. Combined Arms Expansion: 2 Gunships, 2 APCs, 3 Infantry, 2 Tanks and 2 Fighting Vehicles. Deluxe Starter: 3 CAVs, 2 Gunships, APC, 3 infantry (each of this for two different factiosn), plus a rulebook and quick start guide. Mad Pat
Keep in mind that there is a retail magic number that both customers and retailers will go for. look dollar wise at the other starter sets that reaper has produced, and use that as a bench mark. I mean it would be great to put two platoons from two factions in a deluxe box set but what is that price folks are gona pay. Jeneki
Keep in mind that there is a retail magic number that both customers and retailers will go for. So I take it a full section of 1:60 Bigtators is out of the question?
wildger
Whatever the content inside, I hope that packaging will much better. I bought the current starter set. I was shock initially when I opened it. All the parts were grouped together with no reference to which belongs to which. Fortunately, there were pictures from the catelog to help me figuring out. But still, it was a bit intimidating.
DETHSTRYKER
also, they have Journals of Recognition for just said purpase. Its a Journal so you can Recognize them... Knowledge is Power and Knowing is Half the Battle... So I take it a full section of 1:60 Bigtators is out of the question? Nope. That's for AICOM...
