Borsig-Spline Warmaster section

Recommended Posts

It is foolish to overlook the Mantis under any circumstances when you need a CAV which can go toe to toe with anything short of a Super class chassis and expect to come off a winner. In the Warmaster it is almost a must to have at least one, if not more.

Due to the lack of releases, my 'make do' section will be making a return to the Warmaster this year, with the hopes of winning a third sttaight title for Bad Blood.

When it comes to the Warmaster, it's been found that IFM's do not cut the mustard. The table is too small an environment when you have 4 teams on the field, and to be honest, it's more favourable to get to middle range and open up with multiple DF weapons that with a single IF weapon which may not do much, that's if it can hit the target due to the proliferation of upgraded crew fielded in the Warmaster.

The Warmaster roster itself is all about maximising your odds and attempting to mimimise your opponent's odds. Sure, you can remove the DFM's from the Mantis, but you lose 2 shots. With a +3/+1 missile pack, I don't believe it's a prudent decision since that missile pack can often mean an extra, and often vital, point of damage.

Armour upgrades make sense, and everyone seems to take them. Also, the breeder upgrade mentioned is a wise decision for the Mantis, as the Wyvern's breeder gives a superior power curve, despite what the fluff might suggest. With the exception of making all chassis' confirm to Frank's Purity Principle and an ECM upgrade for every CAV, that's where I left it last year.

Sure, I didn't get TL all that much last year, but my opponent's didn't get TL much more either. With my additional armour, my CAV's stood up to the best people could throw at it and survived. Sure, I used my repair nanites a few times, but mainly it was balls to the wall and guns blazing which carried the day.

Another factor which you need to remember, is that the Warmaster is, by it's very essence, an artificial environment which merits a change in mind set. Sure, putting CAV's down is always nice, but the aim of the game is to have a high score. This means marshalling your own forces and damaging the enemy as much as possible. And never be afraid to let the enemy repair, it'll earn you more points in the end :o)

Due to this factor, you have also a different target priority scheme to work on. Super class CAV's, while they're tough, don't offer anywhere near the reward that a Heavy chassis (or heaven forbid, a Light) offers. The reason being that the total points gets divided by the number of tracks. So, this means Heavy class targets often yield more points per track. So, unless you can put a lot of damage on a Super, it's often not worth it in terms of maximising your score. As for Supers dictating moves and zones of control, granted the Mastodon has the potential to do this, but the Rhino is such a known quantity it's not really a viable plan.

The Starhawk VI gave a reasonable account of itself last year, and the '70 Dictator and BL Dictator didn't do too much in terms of OTT damage (there was only 2 if I remember, and one got knocked out in the first round), but the Mantis was king.

Lemme rephrase that, the Mantis is king :o)

Or maybe it's because I use a different philosophy when it comes to roster design and the combat itself? :o)

Jeremy, I've said it before and I'll say it again, it didn't matter that much that you guys pounded on each other - besides, it gave you something to do while I was repairing :o)

*A faint chanting of "Ogre! Ogre! Ogre!" arises from the background, though no-one is there who could be chanting.*

I assure you guys, it's down to philosophy.

The nasty rumours flying around that the gloves are in fact +5 Gloves of the Great Ogre are totally false, and if I might say, rather unsportsmanlike :o)
