Neyuttad
Ok here goes. I’m looking to start a light-hearted sci-fi campaign. I’m not sure what rules to use as of now but I’m thinking about T20Lite (http://www.travellerrpg.com/T20/), the free version (I’m really open for suggestion on that one) In any cases, the game is going to focus around storytelling rather than dice rolling. It will go at a relatively moderate pace. The GM will not hold your hand; you’re free to tell your story within reasonable limits. I will only jump in when you trigger something or to throw a twist. That works for me as I’m rather really really busy with school so a 10 minutes post a day without having to look up rules is perfect. So what we need is a crew of 4-6. We need pilots, comm. officers, doctors, mechas, weapon officers… The story starts like this: you’re an out-of-luck space bum looking for a job, you’ve found one. PS: I realize there’s another sci-fi game running right now. I can always postpone this one to a later date if it annoys people.
Vinny
COOL!!! A few questions: 1) What is the world we are playing like? Maybe a run-down on any organizations or factions currently existing or any piece of info our characters might know? 2) Any major things we need to know about the world (wars, conflicts, laws)? 3) What are the equipments availabe (salvaging equipments, guns, armors, etc) This should be fun! Space is vast, very vast. Sector Gamma, Subsector Calisto is an uncharted region. Many of the outpots located there are small self-sufficient mining colonies. The campaign starts around Junk'R Us, a tongue-in-cheek, "hilbilistic" family company. You get the idea... 2. Right now given your situation you're only concerned about getting a job and making some dough. There will be conflicts but I will keep it light-hearted and humorous. You won't have to fight for the survival of humanity. 3. Regular sci-fi stuff; laser blaster, phaser, towels.... Note... - Your world involves around your spaceship - Trading, mining, making deals, meeting shady business associates etc will be required - locating, selling, stealing etc alien artifacts - Evading Junk'R Us nefarious but stupid competitors - etc
Neyuttad
Note about your character: keep it funny, keep it original and whimpsical. We really don't need another Han Solo.
Vinny
Here's my basic character idea: Name: Ezekiel Branson (A.K.A.: "Zeke") Age: 43 Hair: Bald Eyes: Brown Occupation (former): -Colonial Space Marine, "Whiskey Company" Distinctive feature(s): -Barcode tattoo on the back of neck (serial code) Stats: - Very Strong - Average Dexterity - Very Hardy (Endurance) - Averagely Intelligent - Not Charismatic (slighty-repulsive manners) Background: - Born on remote colony world - Grew up as a petty street thug and contraband dealer - Arrested for failed burglary attempt and drafted into the Colonial Armed Forces of registered backwater colony world - Served for five years a grunt, later promoted to Colonial Sergeant - Transferred into "Whiskey Company" (Colonial Penal Company) with orders to cleanse indigenous areas for colonial construction and protecting colonial settlements against indigenous raiders or bandits - Accused and found guilty of seven counts of Colonial Property theft, and three counts of Treasonous Activities involving the peddling of a large number of military properties to bandit forces - Court martialed, and dishonorably discharged from Colonial Armed Forces - Was to be charged with a sentence of ten year imprisonment in Colonial Penitentiary, but bribed a guard and hijacked a half-repaired Colonial supply freighter - Escaped to some remote space station on galactic trade route - Peddled the stolen supply freighter for a case of Scotch Whiskey and ammunition - Currently unemployed Zeke, as most tend to call him, is a coarse-mannered, happy-go-lucky, and usually brawly type sort of person. A former Colonial Space Marine, Zeke was discharged from his duty and fled the planet when he was caught smuggling weapons shipments from Colonial convoys to bandit forces. He served as a bouncer on one of the clubs on the space station he hid at after his escaped, and was later fired for drinking on the job. Eventually founded himself seeking employment from Junk R' US... Zeke is a tall and decently muscular man, but years of lazing off made him slightly wide around the belt. He is bald, and carries the barcode tattoo on the back of his neck, marking him as a Marine and also one that was a former criminal (Penal Company). He is a decent person once you get to know him, although his slightly uncivilized manners and habits might not mark him as such. An avid smoker and drinker, slightly pyromaniac, and a gun fanatic, Zeke is a decent weapons officer, that is, as long as one can tolerate his slightly-redneck demeanor. (Hint: Picture Corporal Noobs, but taller, buffer, a little bit fat, and with a heavy Southern accent) Possible Equipments: - Laser Rifle - Laser Pistol - Laser Ammo (Energy Cell?) - Steel Combat Knife - Battle-worned, Colonial Standard Issued Combat Armor - Two bottles of cheap Scotch Whiskey - Pack of cheap cigars with butane lighter (Zippo-style)
Neyuttad
That works... Zeke: So if your employer were to ask you what use could you be in a spaceship, what would you answer?
Neyuttad
So I just got my hands on the classic Traveller book 1, 2 and 3 by GDW through ebay. I guess I'm going to use that. Anyone else interested in starting a space campaign?
Vinny
That works... Zeke: So if your employer were to ask you what use could you be in a spaceship, what would you answer? Y'all lookin' for somune that knows his weapons, den I'm yore man!"

Niceman
Sounds kooky :) I'd like to join in if I can :) I have the original Traveller books so I can make a character via them.
Neyuttad
You're certainly welcome to join. What type of character do you have in mind?
Niceman
Still debating on that... the two ideas I have at the moment are an engineer always wanting to tinker and invent something...ususally with the scrap we find.... cargo-hold sized can openers and the like, or an out of work warbot named Mongo :P I'll think on it some more :) When did you want to get underway? Take your time if you need it. No rush actually. I'm still waiting for more people but if that fails, i'll just fill the remaining crew with npcs. Still, 3+ PCs would be desirable. Oh and I like your idea, let us know how it goes out
CuCulain42
I'd be interested. I've never played Traveller(one of a handful I haven't.) Would reading the Traveller light at least get me more or less up to speed? I've got a doctor character idea kind of forming up.
Neyuttad
Hey Cuculain, glad to have you join us, let us know how the character is coming. ALso, I was reading through the T20-lite and didn't like it much. The classic book 1-3 are so much simpler I think. In any case, I don't want this campaign to be heavilly based on stats, I would prefer a more narative kind of campaign. It's ok if you don't have the books, just give me your character's background and we'll generate something out. This campaign will be based mainly in space, in your spaceship. Interaction between crewmembers- among themselves and with the ship will be the one of the main event. Because of that, most of my notes right now evolves around the ship, what it looks like, its functions, crew accomodations, ship AI (like an npc) etc. I'll post more info later. Suggestions are always welcome! Also, I'm looking for an interesting and dynamic space ship combat system, any suggestion? I'm looking through starmada right now
