It IS how you say it-

I've lately noticed a number of topics with titles like "I'M MAD..." A RANT ABOUT...."

"NOW I'M REALLY MAD..." etc. It used to not be that way here....

When I see a topic with a title like the above, regardless of subject, it takes real effort to make myself read it. If it's in WARLORD, I feel I should, as a playtester and Black Lightning Rep.....I may be able to help. But my honest inclination is to ignore subject and poster until some manners are acquired.....

Almost everyone who has been here for over a month will do almost anything to help another painter or gamer. The Reaper Company folks go even further. There is absolutely no reason for the "online yelling" that some are doing to attract atention to themselves.

So anyone this applies to, and there are only a few, lighten up, please. We are here to help.

Here is my two cents. You can of course take this how you wish. It's the same opinion I have on threads in beekeepers.

If you don't like a thread, don't read it. Plain and simple. You can pretty much tell by the title what the thread is, so if it's a problem, just don't read it. Freedom of choice is something we all have and can exercise at will.

These boards are a place for people to come to to chat about miniatures, gaming and of course to blow off steam should the need arise. People have every right to rant and vent about things they don't agree with. So you don't agree with what they are ranting about. I can probably bet good money that plenty of people don't agree with many things posted by people on here. Most though don't complain about it.

Here's a good example: I see a lot of threads on here about video games or computer games. They don't interest me for the most part so I don't read them. I'm not going to sit here though and complain about the existence of those threads. They have every right to exist just as the threads where someone is venting, ranting, or celebrating the birth of a child.

He's not referring to the content, he's referring to the delivery. Putting it in all caps is considered rude by many, akin to shouting. Not making the subject descriptive leads to a waste of time.

I think the point boils down to: talk about whatever is allowed by the boards - just be a polite and effective communicator.

That's how I read it too.

A RANT ABOUT BLONDE HAIR.... (shouting)

verses

A rant about blonde hair.... (not shouting)

Each heading says exactly the same thing, one is simply more polite about it.

It's all about Netiquette.

And I have such faith in you guys that I turned off the KEEP PEOPLE FROM SHOUTING option on the board. Yes, there really is that option.

The only time I shout is when I have something happy to share, but it's usually only words like YAY and WHOO HOO or YIPPPEEEE! If I want to emphazise a word I just bold it. I chat with people at work and some times I forget to turn off my CAPS...I usually get a message telling me to stop shouting at them.

And it really is how you say it. Once my husband even asked me if I was mad at him b/c we were 'chatting' and I was using all caps again. I was being sarcastic but it came across to him as if I was mad at him.

Sometimes content can make the capitals good though..for instance..WHOOOHOOOOOOO!

(usually followed by a few choice smilies)

Yeah though..I agree, subject titles like "I'm p***ed off" and "This sucks" are pretty darn indicative that the content is going to be a disjointed or unfounded hate-filled rant rather than a well-organised and relevant debate or disagreement. I also find that ambiguous titles on one of the "important" boards (unlike good ol' Off-Topic) are a cheap way to seek attention rather than making it clear what the point of the topic is, if one indeed exists.

(yeah..I'm trying to use up a few of my half-dollar words today)

The angry rant/pissed off threads are not a problem for me as long as they are clearly marked as angry rants AND give a clear indication what they are about in the subject line. Then I can read them or skip them at my whim, depending on what mood I am in at the time.

And did you notice the use of caps to emphasize a word!! hee hee

iAm sO mAD anD AnGrY! There’s no such things as Nettiquet: online everyone is a bully.

Honestly though, I couldn't care less. What irks me the most is people turning this place into a blogging (livejournal) space and rant about it. In other words, I'm not sure I care whether a fellow poster feels depressed because she or he has no gf/bf/it-f or whatever.

The truth is, I don’t read a topic unless it has a catchy or meaningful title - whether it is caps or non-caps are pink-font etc is just a matter of taste.

My Thoughts:

it does make it difficult to attempt to address a problem or offer a solution if you can't find the issue due to titles that are too vague.

if there is a packaging issue hidden in a thread titled "I'm really mad", that does make it difficult for the people who can address the packaging issue to locate and solve it.

I know the people who solve the problems are too busy to read every single thread here.

To make it easier to get your needs addressed, title your threads to reflect your issue.

If your posts don't have things that you desire resolved from official types, put them in the appropriate forums and title them in a family friendly fashion.

Just my thoughts...

Well, these are discussion forums, not shouting forums. However, I'm lenient when it comes to threads in the Off-Topic and Beekeepers forums. That's what they are there for. For awhile, it was discussed if those forums should even exist, it was decided that they should, therefore if someone wants yell or complain, let them.

As for the Reaper related discussion forums, I think that yelling and complaining in an improper manner is not appropriate. There is no reason that these topics can't be discussed rationally. People here are quick to help and Reaper customer service is top notch. You can get the same results with rational discussion, so why resort to screaming?

Note - when I mentioned complaining above, I was referring to potentially offense rants, not to topics like, "help, I can't thin my paints right."
