Is the "evil company" really so evil?

A) 20 plastic skellies for $30?

http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefr...5203&GameNav=13

That's odd. This online store says there's only 16 in here.

B) http://www.black-tree-design.com/btdcat.ph...834;=&shp=&tot=

18 skellies for $30.63. Granted, not inclusive of shipping charge, but my guess is they're metal. Didn't scan the site long enough to check.

C) http://ironwindmetals.com/catalog/product_...roducts_id=1332

12 skellies for $24.95. Assuming 16 equivalent to GW, total cost $33.33, also metal. Not a total bargain, but a presentable alternative.

D) Oh, and completely tongue-in-cheek, if you like a bit more flesh on your skellies...

http://www.twilightcreationsinc.com/zombies/

100 plastic zombies for $24.95!!!

E) As you can see from my avatar, I am still hoarding a number of GW figs that I bought in a cheaper day and age and will be happy to paint those up eventually.

(For simplicity, I labelled your points A-E ::P:)

A) Yeah, those are wierd Tomb King skellies. I believe they're higher point cost, but look at the regular Vampire Counts box. If you make "rising" skellies, you can stretch the box to 30 or 35 skeleton warriors.

Tomb Kings are assumed to not need as many skeletons, because they don't raise more skeletons through magic like their VC cousins. They only raise what models they've lost.

B) Ugh. Black Tree is too expensive nowadays for the quality of their sculpts in my opinion. Pass. ::P:

C) That does look like a deal, but look how each row is single-pose and only has one weapon.

D) Yes, but they're horribly small (20mm scale?), and single-pose. ::P:

E) Don't think you're the only one. ::D: A month back I bought ~50 saurus warriors and five Skink Cavalry (Tichi Huichi's Raiders) together for $50. That's around $150 worth of stuff. Cheap is good. That's why I also love buying online. (Warstore or Hillcity)

Hey woah there! This is a GW bashing thread not a how-to for finding cheap armies online! ::P:

Is GW evil? No, not really. Not when comapred to real evil like Hitler. Are they inclined to change models and rules sets to sell more of them? Yes. Do they take themselves too seriously sometimes? Absolutely. Does their customer service traditionally suck? Yep. Are they way over-priced on little plastic guys? You betcha'. Do I still buy their stuff? Nope, for all of the above-cited reasons.

I do or have owned the Rogue Trader book, Space Hulk, Deathwing, the third Space Hulk supplement that I can't remember the name of, the Space Hulk variant with the Scout Marines and the big Tyranids (which I still have.) Necromunda, a big Dark Angels army complete with tanks and landspeeders, Man-O-War with a big elvish fleet and the basic 40k set from the edition before the current one. Heck, I even have a Castellan robot I kit-bashed.

Will I buy any more of their stuff? Not a chance. ::):

Ok, I'm an old school 40K player, Rouge Trader days.

Apart from the switching from metal to plastic and still rising prices, the thing that I noticed are the points changes in all incarnations of the rules.

The points cost per squad has gotten cheaper and cheaper, making you have to buy more and more models to enter a 2000 pt. tourney.

*edit*

Necromunda and Space Hulk rocked, though.

Oh, I dunno about that! The Harlequin dwarves (here)

come out to around $2.50 each, and I think they are MUCH better than GW's current plastic dwarfs. The price hike hurts (they used to be in 6 packs for around $1.50 each!), and indeed they are now more expensive than GW's plastic dwarfs, but then IMHO they're better sculpts (they avoid the GW "all foot no knees" dwarf syndrome) and metal to boot. PLus I have no problems ranking them. My rank n' file troops for my WHFB Dwarfs army are mostly Harlequin, with a few BTD thrown in for a good measure. And it looks better, IMHO. Still use GW for Ironbreakers, and the like (they're still better than the competition)...

Plus I REALLY like their Late Romans, quite a bit (more than overpriced Foundry, more than Gripping Beast, and hella more than Whitecross, though nothing beats A&A's 3rd C Romans in my book...).

Damon.

You realize don't you that Harlequin dwarfs bear a remarkable simularity to older GW sculpts. Most of the original Harlequin line was done by ex-GW sculptors.

Heh. When I saw the title, I thought it was a MicroSoft bashing thread. Guess that's what I get for living in the Pacific Northwest.

I don't buy GW stuff, so I can't really comment on their evilness.

Games Workshop is the Microsoft of the wargaming world. Out for a buck at customer and quality's expense.

Who is the apple of the miniature world who puts of an overpriced, yet aestetically pleasing minis who have an irrational cult following?

I'm gonna haveta answer Rackham to that.

Love it or hate it. Some go "ooooh preettty, must have..." and some just can't see the appeal. And I bet there's an irrational cult following somewhere.

So why is there no Reaper Mini equivalent in the computer world? Affordable, reasonably priced, works well with any application (display, wargaming, painting, rpgs, etc.), good quality, great customer service. I'd junk my OS in a heartbeat.

Are you sure it is the Apple followers that are Irrational? Less harware conflicts, better OS and graphics, Less crashes, corruption and Viri. The only downside is less software flexability.
