Darkstar
Just a great sculpt with a ton of evil character. I painted a few for ebay this week so I didn't get as much time as I would have liked to have had to do some more detail work on him. His sword isn't the best NMM as I thought I was done then last minute noticed that I hadn't started the blade yet, so I had to rush it to get it out before the end of this evening. Never enough time, I swear... If you look closely you can see the blood vessels I've painted in under his skin. Most noticable on his left bicep. Cool effect I came up with some time ago using micron pigmas about halfway into finishing the skin tones. Then slowly layering thin layers above the veins to simulate the effect that they are under the skin. Anyways...much bigger photo than I usually display here, but I just wanted to zoom into his skin a little for you all to check out those tones.

Mourningcloud
as always very nice Darkstar; however, i had just one problem: you filed off the pommel detail!! it has this cool wavy wire thing going on and you removed it! Your a Filer! FILER! ......filer.
Darkstar
Lol, not the first time I've filed weird, obscure fiddly details that I don't like, and certainly not the last. I once filed the entire web pattern off of the cloak of the Dark Elf Queen. I hate filigree, for the most part. Thanks all for your comments, much obliged. Zordana
Nice skin. :) I like the bone and the gold in particular, the reds look a bit flat though.
Darkstar
Nice skin. :) I like the bone and the gold in particular, the reds look a bit flat though. Yeah, red is hard to photograph, always has been for me for some reason. I highlight it to the point of really high hotspots, or specularity, but just can't get the photo's, no matter how clear they are, to portray red as it appears in RL. Top 5 colors that are hard to photograph properly on a mini: 1.Red 2.Red hue 3.Red tone 4.Red shade 5.Red highlights I'm satisfied at least that I finally figured out how to paint them properly without overhighlighting to compensate. I used to make them look too orange just so that the photo would come out proper, now I'm content to let the mini look good in RL with it's vibrant and alive reds and the photo can just lie. Thanks for the FB folks, much obliged.
Zordana
I don't think anyone will disagree with you on the red-photography point. Red highlights also tend to get dulled down a lot by varnish, but ive found that you can overcome both the varnish and photography problem by starting with a much darker base tone, that way you don't need to go anywhere near orange in order for the reds to still be vibrant. It's solved the photography problem for me at any rate, and I'm much happier with my reds now in both photography and real life.
Darkstar
.. by starting with a much darker base tone... Yep, you are indeed right about that. Funny thing is, the base tone is Dark Purple! The deep folds are a deep purple that I've highlighted all the way up to a very rich and vibrant red that I've juiced up by adding yellow ink. The reds are the most captivating part of this mini, unfortunately the photo just killed it. I'm painting alot of red stuff this week, going to tweak my lighting and camera settings during the photo stage to see if I can't bring them to life once and for all, it's been a thorn in my side for too long, time to fix it lol. Zordana
Wow that's just weird, though I have had similar experiences. Red can be a real pain in the butt. If screwing with the camera doesn't fix it I can only really suggest going even darker for the basetone. I tend to start with a very dark red that I make by blending black into the main red colour. It usually ends up a very very dark maroon looking colour.
