Other interests?

Recommended Posts

Well, I've got a history exam coming up so I've got to study. Trying to avoid it is the reason I'm posting here ::P: .

Just curious (as a relative newcomer to the forum). I'm assuming most people here share an interest in miniatures but are there any other interests you'd like to talk about? Just trying to get to know the people on the forum a bit ^_^ .

So I'll get started on mine:

SCUBA diving definitely tops the list (apart from sculpting). There's nothing like the feeling of weightlessness combined with the total concentration on "right here and now" that is required - especially if you enjoy "overhead environment" diving like I do.

I mostly do wreck diving since I live by the Baltic sea and it's not a sea known for its varied natural environment. Future goals are to get a full cavern certificate to be able to penetrate deep into tunnel and cave systems.

So far I've just got the cave certificate which allows me to peak a LITTLE bit into a cave.

Ice diving is also one of my favourites.

Aikido is a great sport though I mostly favour the Kata elements of it and I'm thinking about turning to something purely kata oriented such as Iaido or bojutsu.

Wall Climbing is something I enjoy doing with my nine year old daughter. She does most of the climbing since I can hold the security rope for her but she can't hold it for me but I do atleast get a chance to practice on the lower "bouldering" walls were no ropes are required.

Cooking is another favourite. Especially asian and middle eastern food though I also enjoy making various fiddly packages from other cultures (such as Ravioli or Canneloni for instance)

Well... Hopefully that should be enough to get things started :B):

Edit: I'd like to point out by the way that I picked the avatar I did from the gallery simply because it looks quite a lot like me (or at least I think I'm going to look somewhat like that in thirty years time or so)

Probably top of the list right now is Geocaching (Geocaching.com). My wife and I have been trying to get out several weekends a month to hunt, and I've recently purchased a Palm IIIxe to assist me. It's a load of fun, and gets you out to areas you may not have gone to for any othe reason. If you've got a GPSr, I recommend taking a look at it!

I'm also getting into off-roading in conjunction with past-time A. I spend some time every day read Land Rover forums, checking on upgrades and protective measures, techniques, and new areas to take my Discovery off road. It's one of the positive things I'll be taking from Wyoming with me.

It's hard to think of much else right now, since packing and looking for housing probably don't count . . . :poke:

White water rafting is the shiz....especially with a few beers around. Cooking on the gas grill outside during a blizzard. Playin X-box with the kids and Yuki and Matsumoto (and dying many times in Halo/Halo2). Hiking mountain trails. Watching my 9 year old son in wrestling kick some butt (or lose whichever). These are a few of the things I enjoy. I used to enjoy hunting but the idea of killing stuff doesn't appeal any more.... -_-

I've got my home studio setup, which is my primary interest. Working on finishing another song right now and just taking a break.

Actually, that's pretty much the big one. I have PS2, and a general interest in politics, but songwriting is generally my big outlet.

Reading anything not nailed down (and getting a hammer to pull up those things that are), computer games (just about any kind), and watching my kids do everything. I get great joy and entertainment from watching them grow and learn.

Definitely agree with you on that ::D: .

My oldest is my nine year old daughter and my two sons are five and one(just) respectively. They keep surprising me on a daily basis ::): .

Luckily my daughter also shares my sculpting interest so we can sit down together to sculpt sometimes.

She's just started on green stuff but mostly it's Fimo or Sculpey for her.

She's great at making steel wire armatures though, something I didn't learn the importance of until I was well into my twenties.

besides miniatures, I'm into computers (gaming, hardware, etc etc), love D&D, wish I could play more but alas I live in devoid D&D area of the world, so mostly I read it.,

Among computer games I really like City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, guildwars, Diablo2, Fate are among my favs right now.

Also even thou I'm slowly falling out of it, but I am a nascar fan, mostly car modeller & even then mainly just the bodies, as the chassis & tires & such are ehhh on my list of things to do, favs are Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, & Tony Stewart & Kyle Petty.

I also like reading fantasty stuff as well. Mainly the Eberron setting novels & ocsionally a Forgotten Realms novel.

Sew, mostly costumes. Renaissance and Victorian are my current favorite timeframes.

Various needlecrafts to support my sewing habit - knit, crochet, tat, needlepoint.

Miniatures, besides these. I have always loved miniatures so now I'm making them to satisfy all those years of not making them.

Jewelry. Both making and admiring.

Reading far too much and far too fast. Sci fi and fantasy are always a favorite, as are suspense novels.

Rarely updating my web page, sadly.

That about covers it but any one of these takes up a lot of room and time.

Oh boy, do I have a list, are you ready?

This is why I'm not always painting minis:

I do the following:

Sculpt, weave, beadwork, leatherwork, working with sculpey, read, write short fiction and poetry, hike, sing, draw, paint, sew, make pottery...

I collect: Rocks, minerals, fossils, dolls, maps, ceramic frogs (Maybe this is why me and frosch get along..), and of course candelsticks, candelabras and menorahs (Specifically Hanukkiahs.)

Reading (Mostly Fantasy)

Watching movies

Cross-stitching

Listening to music

Some computer games (City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 and Heroes of Might & Magic)

Collecting Breyer Horses and stuffed animals.

My mother has actually gotten me to read some mysteries. They are a series by Donna Andrews and all of the titles have a bird in them somewhere. I like them mostly for the humor in them.

I do play other computer games, the ones I listed are the ones I spend the most time on. I'm thinking I will start playing with Zeus again. I had a lot of fun with it when I first got it.

I dabble in a whole lot of things, but only really have thrown my money and time into a few.

Photography is probably my biggest pass-time. I'm nowhere near good enough to get anything published ..yet.. but I won't give up. I am strictly digital because I lack the cash and the patience to either pay for developing or start my own darkroom. I look for subjects that are either somehow ironic or out-of-place, rarities like rainbows or lunar eclipses, or shots that can be captioned and edited to tell funny stories. I have also been known on occasion to take a pic or two of a Warlord mini or three. :poke:

My second hobby is web-art. I waste alot of free time playing with Photoshop and Illustrator..mostly finding fun ways to tweak my photos to make them even more interesting.

Then there's my writing. I'll probably never be published, but I write because I like to, and it's a good form of escapism.

And last but not least, I love to cook...and eat. ...and it shows. My specialisation is in somewhat fancy desserts and Italian cuisine. Steve and I cook together alot and make one helluva team in the kitchen. I am also working on my skills as a barista; my quest being to someday create the Perfect Cup Of Cappuccino.

Oh...and now we can add to the list mini-painting. I'm actually going to finish my first mini soon. wOOt!

I'm a hard core gamer, so that sort of goes along with Reaper minis. Mostly I play D&D, though I run a PBEM Fading Suns game, and participate in a Diamond Throne game as well as SWD20. There's wild talk about getting some Cthulu games going later this month, and I'm trying to get my group interested in some WHFRPG one-offs.

For wargames, I currently play Warhammer Ancient Battles (in 28mm), Might of Arms, and sometimes dabble in Hordes of the Thing, DBx, and while I collect 10mm WWII, I as of yet have found the "perfect" ruleset.

I also build models, mostily Military AFVs, concentrating in the WWII period. I have a history degree, so this goes hand-in-hand.

Do a lot of reading, mainly history (ancient/medieval, as well as WWII; now reading Otto Cairus' Tigers in the Mud), as well as SF and occasionally fantasy (just doesn't seem like there are many strong fantasy writers anymore...)

That's about it. I'm pretty one-dimensional... ::P:

Damon.
