spiritual_exorcist
THe mini I painted for the exchange. I have to say it is probably the best thing I've ever painted, which is good, I find that every time I paint something it turns out better than the last so I feel like I am progressing. The Good: I'm quite happy with alot of things, the skin, the scroll (first freehand), the gemwork, especially the small ones (my first gems), the Rams Head on the staff, and the cloak (I would have like a little more contrast but it's alright as it is). The Bad: I can't say I care for the hair, nor much for alot of the clothing on him, it just doesn't work for me. I don't really like the base that much, my attempt at creating a bit of ruin inscribed rubble didn't really work, oh well. THe Ugly: God, there are things on him I hate, #1 is the blue ribbons on his bead and hair, just a crappy choice of colour. #2 is just about all of the fiddly little things, they were so difficult and they really didn't turn out well, especially the potions on his belt. All in all I'm pretty happy. As I told Qwyk he was painted with the intention of being a 2nd Margara model for his upcoming Dwarf amry, unfortunately half way through I discovered Margara was Unique. With that in mind I still think he would make a decent 2nd Ivar (with a bit of a druidic twist) I'm always looking to improve, so any comments, positive or negative are much appreciated. Humansquish
Lots of finely panted detail on this one. Good job!
spiritual_exorcist
I would have liked to obtain a better result with the hair. Do you guys think it could have been done with more contrast, thinner layers? I'm not sure. Initially I had intended to make this my first NMM experiment, but I ended up using Metallics as I ran out of time, I tried to use a bit of contract with them (NMM techniques using metallics?). And I had originally intended the Dragon Scale cloak to blend from green at the back to yellow, but I wasn't quite sure how to make this happen with the hood and stuff (meaning how the two sides would joing together). I think I may eventually paint this mini up for myself and I may try to do that effect then. I wish I would have had the courage to do it, but I was fairly happy with the green claok and I didn't want to ruin it. I'm really happy with the pics and the way they came out, I think they are pretty spot on. The only thing that you can't really see are the Rams glowing green eyes, I really like the effect I managed to get with them, made the head look somewhat supernatural as it was looking a little too mundane at first. I slowly feel like I am getting better, this is only my 3rd or fourth mini with thinned paints...I think if I was to invest in a couple of decent brushes that would go a long way to helping. I can't even begin to say how intimidated I was to be following up Flynn's Duke Gerard that Qwyk got in the last exchange!
Qwyksilver
Well, now that I am back (I need a vacation from my vacation - sooo tired). That pic is a rather good representation (except for the scales). I didn't realize that was your first ever attempt at freehand. Excellent job SE! The gems did come out great. I'd love to comment more, but it is one of the things I just can't paint well, so I can't really give any insight. Cool! will have to suffice The Ram's head is still one of my favorite parts of the entire piece. It's just creepy looking in person. The blending on the fleshy bits were great. The eyes seem to follow you, which is just spooky. I don't think the picture does justice to your scales though. They came out much better than you are giving yourself credit for. I loved the figure. And don't feel intimated by a previous exchange mini. That's not the point of the exchange! Participation in an exchange is just about sharing each other's skills and enjoying the swap and the process of painting a figure for someone else. You spent a lot of time and effort on the piece and did some experimentation that allowed your skills to grow. That's what it's all about. GeekGirl
The dwarf's staff is excellent, overall. I agree with you about his hair--some type of contrast in it would be nice. It's too one-colorish. Nice paint job!
Mattnuke
Nice work on those scales!

I wish I would have shot it from a different angle, it really was my favorite piece of the model (although I would have liked to have done better work on the tiny tiny little gems around the Rams neck, but I ran out of time). Made me seriously consider painting up some beastmen for my fledgling Reven army. loved the figure. And don't feel intimated by a previous exchange mini. That's not the point of the exchange! I agree very much, I was really happy to participate mainly as a challenge to myself, I wanted to paint the best mini I had ever painted. And I wanted to give someone else the opportunity to do the same. I have to say I really enjoyed being part of the exchange, and I'll have to get ambitious and join the next one as well. No-one should feel intimidated about joining the exchange, it's about promoting the hobby, having fun, and learning (That being said, at this point Flynn's Duke is so above my level that It didn't really intimidate me, rather it prompted me to excel to the best of my abilities). As I've told a few others, this mini kinda makes me feel like I've reached journeyman level in the ranks of most of the painters on alot of the boards, I've still got a long way to go, but I feel like I am starting to take some big steps (The next big oneswill be investing in some decent brushes, and sorting out NMM).
