What Do You Do?

As i was working, i thought this might be an interesting topic of discussion - what do you do to make a living?

 

Me? i work at the Heinz Frozen Food Plant in Pocatello Idaho - more specifically, i work the Sanitation Shift, 9pm to 5:30am. basically i clean conveyor belts and other food processing machines with a high power sprayer, and come home every morning soaking wet, tired, but a little richer. i make 7.50 an hour, which might go up to 11 in a month.

 

However, this sint my dream job,

id rather be working in the video game industry, for such prestigious companies as Ubi Soft, Rockstar, Relic Ent, Id Software, Lucasarts, Gearbox Software, and the list goes on.

I do alllll sorts of stuff. I'm sort of a farmer.

 

I'm like a farmer's sidekick. Minfarmer, perhaps.

 

As to Rather Be Doing? Well, for now, no other job is so utterly chaotic as to work well with my tiny concentration span, and while the hours suck at peak times, at others they are more... fllllllexible.

 

 

I hear working for a computer games co. is like hosing stuff down only lower paid and not as exciting :)

I am a R&D designer and Model Maker designing and building anit-shoplifting devices. It's a lot of fun and challenging but I would still be working my dream job (actually I have two dream jobs.

1) work for a movie special effects house making models

2) Running my own game store

I'm in the Army, and I enjoy my MOS, which is surprising becuase I stumbled blindly into it. What would I rather be doing? Retiring from the Army at 38 (8 more years).

I am actually a college student. Just a relatively old one. I was a concrete truck <mixer> driver for 10 years....last year I was diagnosed as diabetic, and for those of you who dont know, insulin dependancy negates your CDL (commercial drivers license) I am happy to say that with diet and oral meds I have managed not to need insulin, but in either case I could not drive anymore....My wonderful wife just finished up her masters degree...and offered to work while I go back to school....so I am actually pursuing my dream job......I wanna be a Mad Scientist....Ok...not quite a mad scientist, but I really wanna work in chemical research...I am hoping to land an internship with Monsanto Corp. or somewhere like that next spring after I have finished my associates...(would really help pay for the next two years as I work towards my BS.)

At the moment, I do absolutely nothing, since my last day of work at the crap job I had was last week. Don't know exactly what I'll be doing after that.

 

I WILL be starting to get going on my acting career. I won't make much at first, and most likely will never be famous, but I'll love it.

I work for the Mass Dept of Mental Health in the community as a social worker. I assist my clients, who have been diagnosed with a persistant and serious mental illness, with accessing benefits and services in the community in order for them to maintain the greatest degree of independence they are capable of. Usually this includes applying for disability benefits, accessing housing subsidized or not, coordinating outpatient appointments for therapy and meds, assistance with vocational and educational goal planning, and just giving many of them a point of human contact with someone who actually cares if they live or die. They other part of my job is clinical assessments to determine appropriate level of care in the community, assistance with crisis evaluations, coordination of aftercare planning when leaving hospitals, etc. I love many aspects of my job. The part I hate the most is the never ending paperwork that is added that prevents me from being more involved with my clients. I work predominantly with young adults and the dually diagnosed (substance abuse and MI) which frequently are comorbid.

 

I definitely have to love my job, because the financial rewards are nil. Case in point, my wife is the bread winner, and she teaches in a public school. Knowing what I do has a profound impact on the lives of the people I serve though is reward enough. Being able to watch folks leave a hospital with little hope of independence graduating from college, working, living in their own place, and having meaningful relationships with families and peers again is its own reward.

 

My dream jobs would be:

1) When I complete my Masters and get licensed to be a Clinical Social Worker. Then I will be able to work independently as a therapist and do more intensive and hands on work.

2) When I complete my Masters and can work in a school system as a diagnostician to help ensure children with a disability get the services they really need. I love doing the research and testing. It's a challenge, and allows me to really flex my clinical skills.

3) Be a dad. Something my wife and I are discussing now as a near future possibility. Given our incomes, the little bit extra after child care expenses I would earn is not worth letting a stranger raise our kid, so I will leave state service, deferring my retirement (I already have 11 yrs in) and be a stay at home dad. Since my own father was not around when I was growing up, this is probably the best job I could ask for.

I work in the maintenance warehouse of an ammonium nitrate plant. It's a great job, pretty lax and non-stressful.

My dream job would be to run a used book store (of course with a good sized gaming section.)

I am the production manager at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. My duties include organizing labor, advancing shows and concerts, talking to clients on the phone, equipment upkeep, maintaining stage systems, and running the place. I do alot of paper work gak too.

 

My dream job is barely diffeent than my current job... I would rather be designing set and lights for theatre than managing one. But I'm in KS so I shouldn't complain. I would also like to run a paintball field or work in the gaming industry making tables, terrain, painting, and giving input into game systems. That would be sweet.

I'm a software developer. I've spent most of my career in the healthcare industry, mostly writing software to handle insurance claims processing. However, I did work for a few years writing the 911 software for the City of San Antonio Police Department.

 

Suprisingly, from a purely geeky perspective, the job isn't as boring as you'd think.

 

I too would love to be working in the video game industry, and actually recently fired a resume off to Ensemble to try to get in on their new MMORPG group. Unlikely to prduce results, but you can't win if you don't play.

 

Game design is a passion of mine. Eventually (which means never unless I get my butt in gear) , I'd like to get my name on a few products. Ideally, I'd retire and take to writing. Currently, I'm saving pennies towards that aim.

I do graphics and occasional casting for Reaper Miniatures. I work with our BL team to make sure they have everything they need to teach you how to play Warlord and CAV, or how to paint. I even sometimes get to write fluff and stuff, and I recently wrote the Reven Factionbook, which is a huge milestone event for me.

 

My dream Job is writing D&D supplements for a living, or something similarly Geek-like. Writing the Revenbook almost counts, but I don't do that full time . . .

I'm a desktop publisher and graphics design specialist using crappy software (although my title is listed as Clerk (OA)) for the Internal Revenue Service.

Dream Job? Working for Reaper making twice I currently do (ain't gonna happen). So, since it's not going to happen (like I could make over 60K a year in the gaming industry anywhere) I'll be happy to retire from the government with a nice pension after rising to a GS-13.

Yuki you already know what I do, but I'll state it any way. I am a detective for the Pocatello Police dept. Specifically I am the domestic violence investigator(the only one in the entire county). I have worked for the dept. for 11 years.

 

Prior to my current postion I worked in the patrol division. For six years I was assigned to the DUI task force and I arrested approx. 650 drunk drivers in that time. I was also a fire support specialist (13F) in the Army National Guard where I learned how to call in artillery strikes....a very useful skill in civilain life.

 

I am also a husband and a dad (I have two sons ages 9 and 15) and other than that I am a gamer geek (since age 12, I'm 38 now). I also murder Yuki's elves with Da Reven Horde.

I am an HIM processor one for PHNS....essentialy getting medical charts in order and ready to be scanned into an electronic database for docs and other health care providers.

Also, I am an on-call graphic artist for the Anatomy dept of MSU....guess which job I would rather be doing full time
