Well, it's done. The paint job was done a while ago according to my standards then, and now that Enchantra's done wonders with basing and I've put it all together, I'm finding things I want to change in the paint job. However, it's heading to its new owner next Tuesday, so I'm not going to let myself start messing with it again. Thanks, E, for the marvy basework!

Wow, Kellyn. I've owned this little guy from his initial release and I must say you've made him gorgeous! I love the shading. How did you get all of those teeny, tiny little bumpy scales to stand out so well? Great job. He's got wonderful personality.

That has to be one of my all time favorite dragons, I love the blue Kellyn and the shading is fantastic. I know the new owner will be over joyed!

Thanks, all! And yeah, DS, that did take quite a lot of time. I lost track of how long exactly. If you're coming to gaming tonight, I can bring it along, though if you'd like to just stop by and see it, it'd be much easier. It leaves the state on Tuesday morning. :)

 

Lemme see... colors and technique.

Colors first: When I started this, the Master series wasn't out yet, so all paints used were Pro Paints except in the very end when I had to touch up where stuff rubbed off. I honestly don't remember a lot of the specific Xcolor -> Ycolor, etc. but I know I based most of it in Blue-Black, mid-toned Night Sky, worked highlights with Ice Blue. I had shades in between there, but I don't remember specifics, and knowing me I actually mixed my own with those colors. I tend to do that. I wanted the head/face to have a nice pearly sheen, so my final highlighting colors were Cornflower and Pearl White. There are a couple detail places where I used silvers, and I did a very light brushing of Truesilver over a lot of the scales for sparkle. The fins in between the spines are actually a rich dark purple color, which didn't show up in the pic. (But the blues and the base are spot on so I left it. *heh*) Based those in Amethyst, changed my mind and did them in silver, changed my mind and did them in Amethyst again... *heh* Highlighted with Elderberry, because I wanted them dark. Inside of the wings started at a mid-tone base color, through Ice blue, white, pearl white spots. I dark lined (and retouched) that area over and over and over and it just never worked, I think the lines just aren't sculpted very deeply. Spines and nails and teeth were... ack... maybe Buckskin? Something light yellow-brown. Worked up through Linen White, and then I went back in along the bottom edges with some of the base blue colors and dragged them randomly up a little bit. Some spines are more streaky than others.

 

Technique/Ary: The scales were drybrushed. *hides* Actually, it was more of a very controlled drybrushing with a more paint on the brush than I normally use for drybrushing, but it was the same basic idea. I was pleased with the result. This dragon (as you know) doesn't have scales as much as it has just a mass of tiny bumps, but they also sculpted in some shapes on it along both sides, and the drybrushing technique really just picked up all of that with very little effort on my part.

 

Technique/LordCS: Colors are above, but as far as highlighting process, I like to work from dark to light; base coat with my shadow color and move outward to the tips. I'm learning that it's not the most efficient way to do it, but I've yet to change my ways. *heh* On the face, I always do the eyes first on anything I paint. It gives me an idea of their personality, and thus what colors and styles I want to do with the rest of it. Really, I'm a haphazard painter; when one part inspires me, I'll paint it and see what comes to me next. On this guy I had most of the head done before I went on to the rest, though I did basecoat most of it once I had his eyes in.

 

Biggest complaints: Should have painted before I stuck the wings on. *bah* Some of those spines down the back are really messy because I had a hard time reaching them. Wings and tail are VERY bendable. Had to greenstuff a large gap at the neck, which is something I'd never done before, but from what I hear of dragons in general, this one was really easy to put together. So that's good.
