Gus Landt
OK, it has been at least a year since I've posted pics of a mini. I went a few months not painting anything, then a few months just speed painting armies, and then a few months trying to paint better minis for competition. Here is the dude I painted last month and entered in Origins (he didn't place). I've done one or two gems before, but never this many. Also, this was my FIRST real attempt at NMM, so please be kind! I think the part I like best is the three armor plates in the groin area. The top one is scultped 3D, but the 2 beneath it are scuplted flat, and I tried to paint them as if they were 3D. Moderator Froggy the Great Posted August 1, 2005 Moderator Share Posted August 1, 2005 You're submitting this to the Reapergames mini gallery, right?
ugluk69
Dude that looks good. The armor is quite nice. Great job!!
Kelcore
Wow, Gus! Eye-popping improvement. Super-vibrant red. And that gem-skirting looks killer. And that is a fantastic job of making the bottom plates match the top one with the 3d effect. For your 1st attempt at NMM, it's pretty darned good. You just need to have some smoother transitions in there, is all. Also, being a little more bold (ie: going all the up to white) with your highlights (like you were on the gems) in certain places (the skull, the gold) would really make it pop more. The black looks pretty flat, but compared to how awesomely "in your face" the red is, just about anything would. Still, hilighting the black would only add to how cool this work is. I've got to echo Frosh's sentiments here, man. Get it up on Reapergames, get some points for it. It's too cool not to put up there!* *(BTW, that goes for everyone. It's becoming the Ugluk69/ Kelcore show over there, and as nice as that is, I know that most of y'all have painted minis to play with. Get 'em up there! Get yourself some points for your hard work!) Niloc
Really good job Gus Landt. Lots of gem work, nice job Could be my eyes , the photo and/or monitor, but the highlights on the armor could be brought up just a bit (IMHO). Your NMM looks cool, I haven't got up the nerve to try it yet Thanks for sharing.
Mojoman
I'm gonna drop in my 2 cents... This is great! Especially nice *pop* factor if he's used in tabletop games! Great vibrant color! Nice one, man! Mojo
Stubbdog
I feel your pain on the painting side. I had a group paint and take event over this past weekend. I did this with full anticipation of getting to sit down and paint some myself. I ended up spending the entire time playing host and answer man. Oh well. It was still fun. As for a critique. Reds are always tough to do. They never photo the way they really look. But, even so, I agere with Kelcore. You have a real nice shade of red there, but I don't think you took it far enough with your highlighting and shading. Your face is awesome and those dark black eyes wre well defined without painting outside the lines so to speak. Could possibly work on the claw on the front hand a bit, looks unfinished (too clean). Love your gem work. Best part of the paintjob for sure. And why not you can tell that is where the most of your effort was.
Darkstar
Wow, you could have fooled me about those armor plates, they look perfect!
Dancin'Debby
Here is the dude I painted last month and entered in Origins (he didn't place). not exactly true Gus...I think you're being a bit modest here. You did get second place for Reaper awards, which was great considering the guy who placed first for the manufacturer awards, placed second in the Master category (namely Mengu ) and you were in the Open category. Didn't you win $50 in gift certificates for something you weren't sure you wanted to even enter?! all in all, I still think you did an awesome job on this guy. debby

spiritual_exorcist
I've been thinking about doing gemwork on scale mail as of late, I think i've been inspired to give it a try, boy that looks great.
Gus Landt
Thank you all for the great compliments! And your advice is exactly what Anne told me at Origins - Bring the reds up higher, and highlight the black. The only reason I hadn't done those is because he was painted up to play with. Once I was encouraged (thanks Debbie!) to enter him, I added the gold NMM, but that was about it.
Naterstein
Those green "gems"? are freaking nice looking! and I think you did great on the skull too.
