If you decide to do a "wash": Use a little bit of acrylic flow improver (available from craft stores) in your wash. Try a bit of a black wash on the steel, but on the gold try brown instead. If it doesn't look neat enough when you're done, give it a careful drybrush with the metallics again.

Compliments: it looks neat and tidy. I envy anyone with good brush control, mine tends to be terrible. That might not sound like a huge compliment but getting the paint on in a neat, tidy way is 2/3rds the battle and often hard to do.

That looks pretty good. I like your color choices. Here are a few suggestions.

On the silver armor, start with a muddy brown base coat, then dry brush some sliver on (or paint on the highlights), then do a black wash. This will give you an antique look to it. For the gold, you need to do either a dark brown or black wash on what you have, then go back and highlight the tips. On the shoulderpads, you did a good job. Get a color a little lighter then the one you did and use it to highlight the design a little bit. I think if you worked on your highlighting, you would find a major improvment. Keep it up... and remember to have fun at this. I know that when I started working on shading and glazing, it really started enjoying painting a lot more, and found I was working on one piece with greater interest (I used to paint 5 or 6 at a time).

Great job Mojo!

YOU SUCK! SUCK SUCK SUCK! ;) No, I'm teasing - I've always wanted to do that when someone says "Be kind"

This is much better than my earlier attempts at painting.

You are already off to a great start. Your color choices are good, he is painted neatly, the base is finished. Everything else is technique. You must learn the art of shading and highlighting, blending, etc...

You have demonstrated good brush control - which is important. The rest is just learning how to apply various techniques to get the desired results.

People mentioned using washes - and this is a great start. This will give you shading and will help pick out details like the spaces between plates, rivits etc..

Once you do this, you can then hit the model for some highlighting - like picking out the raised edges of the plates, folds in fabric - and the rest is just building on these basic forms. :)

Nice work :) Glad to see you posting as well.

Great choice of sculpts Mojoman. I ran him through PS (hope you don't mind).

Welcome to the boards. You'll find lots of information, tips and tricks on these boards. I've learned alot, I'm not saying I can hold a candle to these guys in painting, but I've learned alot ::P:

I like the metallic armor, but the only thing I can say is the horns on the helm, they need to be more horny  ummm ... painted with a bone color. And maybe a med. gray drybrush on the chainmail and the same for highlights on the hi points of the rest of the armor (IMHO).

Thanks for sharing, keep painting, post often.

Yeah... the silver was on purpose... didn't want real bone horns. But thanks for the suggestion. :;):

Thanks all for the compliments and helpful criticism. I paint mostly so I don't have a bunch of plain metal figures all over the game board. But, since I've been on this site, I've been inspired to try to push myself to get better. I appreciate the comments!
