Darkstar
Whew, now that I've finally broken down and done this I can just point to this thread the next time the topic comes up. Sweet! Either that, or you opened up a pandora's box of requests for all your trade secrets... lol Thank you for your tutoria there. It was very helpful. I'm of the mindset that sharing knowledge is the way to unlock it's true power. The easy part is finding out the "what" of something, but that's only the first step in the long road of the "how" to do it. I've met people who can talk about a subject for days on end due to their "book smarts", but in practical matters, I'm surprised they end up putting their shoes on the right feet in the morning lol. Then there's those who have their practical techniques down like a science in method and practice, but when I've grilled them for tips, they've said things like "I just paint by feel, don't remember what colors I used, or even what brand." And I was like "yeaah....riiight" hahah. Information is power and all that, some secrets NEED to be jealously guarded, but not when it comes to hobby secrets, those need to be shared so that we can all continue to develop the hobby and push it to the next level. Hence why I'm such a "forum" person for all of my interests. It's like a realtime Earth knowledge classroom in many ways, but better because you don't have to smell people's Dorito breath.
eastman
And just my luck, I'm bidding on a mini that Gus also wants great work on the painting and thanks for the hair technique
Elouchard
That was a nice example and explanation. It is interesting that when drawing hair with a pencil it is easy to do that kind of highlighting and looking at photos it all makes perfect sense. With minisatures though, it is something one needs to think about and make an effort. The natural way to do mini-hair is drybrush downwards from the top as it is fast and looks good on the tabletop. Highlighting hair like a reflective surface looks way better though, and is not like NMM as a style choice - it just looks better than the basic way of highlighting hair. Very nice. Darkstar
@Elouchard, thanks, yes I think that the way most mini's hair is sculpted lends itself to the easier method of overbrushing from the top down. In fact I've taken to filing off a lot of the ridges and details so to have a smoother surface to paint. It all depends on the sculpt. Each sculptor has a very unique way of doing hair, no two are alike lol. @Lady Tam, welcome back, and thanks! @Niloc, thanks, glad you liked
Gus Landt
And just my luck, I'm bidding on a mini that Gus also wants Sorry, man. I've been wanting a 'Darkstar' mini in my collection, and this is the one I'm hoping for. Unfortunately for me, it looks like you might want it more. My pockets may be deep, but I got GenCon next week!

Darkstar
I'm painting a mini for a guy who's going to GenCon, will be finished tonight to be shipped tomorrow am, pushing it pretty close, but he asked late, I'll post the mini here in Show Off maybe later tonight/this morning, then if you see it at GenCon, you can say, "Hey! I know that mini!" It's an Iron Kingdoms Dwarf, I've converted the staff a bit and am on the finishing stage detailing right now.
deep_sashelas
Holy. I haven't looked at these forums for a couple days and I come back and see this. Wow. Cool. Nice. Ooh. Wow. Brain stopped, can't think of more complicated words... Thank you so much for the hair tutorial! And for your generous philosophy of sharing knowledge. DChihorn is right, I'm going to be one of those forever asking questions and badgering people to write tutorials, so hem, do share more when you have the time. Now if only I could train myself to see how light reflects off surfaces. Off to go squint at hair magazines...
