I forgot about Fatima. At full strength and CP 7 she can't fail when casting on a friendly model. I often overlook her because of Tariq and Khufu's SA Cleric, but her CP is awesome. A MD 15 and Sokar is Near faction ability, no body is tagging Fatima with a Spell. With a DV 8 you better protect her.

The Nefsokar player here uses a lot of Tomb Guards and Mummies. Their high DV works as a beautiful screen from archers for him to use Fatima to Teleport and then bandage the blasted Avatar.

He does use a small unit of 3 rangers with Tariq and blesses to be a thorn in your side and keep you a little honest. Stupid 10 rolling archers always manage to nick one of my big guys at least once. ::D:

This last sunday I ran two demo games at my regular venue here in Columbus (Ohio) at which the new players were handed a Nefsokar 750-point army.

The first game was a player totally new to miniature games, but an old hand at roleplaying (and used to a battlemat). He was playing against my Necropolis vampire-heavy army. After the first two turns I stopped holding back and gave it everything that I got as far as tactics goes, but kudoes to Carl Fleig: he won fair and square, having killed all my units and having about 40% of his own army left.

It's a known weakness of my vampires that they have no magic in it at all (other than 3 pieces of magic gear, I think), but they have a lot of the excellent skeleton archers and some hefty melee power. Carl was very smart in sacrificing a few units to lure Lord Vandrian away from his main trust, got lucky with the initiative turnover once, and capitalized on it. Well done!

The second battle was a female enthusiast that was even newer to Warlord, with very little gaming experience in general to build on, and she was battling one of our Reven regulars (who is a quite young but promising player). Reven featured a Hill Giant, a group of 6 Bull Orc Archers, Narg leading Ombur and a mix of Hunters and Warriors, and Kharg with 3 Hunters. At the end of the battle (8 turns if I recall correctly) the Nefsokar had lost exactly 4 models and the Reven were all dead. A *very* impressive showing from Kimberley, whom I hope to see more in our games.

Note: since the Reven really wanted their Hill Giant this battle was played at 800 points.

So, here's the army list that the Nefsokar used to great succes. Design is by Benjamin Ferguson, who was good enough to lend the Nefsokar miniatures to interested parties at the demo day:

"Sokar Has Beer"

Lord Khadath (lesser magic armour, moderate magic weapon)

Fatima (bandage *3, bless) > 'hold' added for the second game, but not used

Tomb Guard *3 > +1 for the second game

Mi-Sher

Awakened *3

Walking Avatar

Walking Avatar

Total: 747 points (798 for the second game)

I got the strong impression that there were a few good reasons for the success of this list:

1. In both cases Fatima was used in the background to keep Khadath and the Avatars in fighting shape.

2. The Awakened were only used offensively versus weakened opponents, or in the rear after the opponent was pinned. It saved them from quite a few defensive strikes.

3. Lord Khadath & the Avatars (may need to go on tour with Traeg & the Woodcutters) had so many damage tracks between them that they could slug it out with nigh anyone, and they all had Warmaster (plus a high MAV).

4. The Horrid SA of the Avatars meant that they rarely got swarmed. Combined with their high DV, they stood their ground without much effort.

Some notes:

1. Since this was a demo for people brand new to the game we didn't use any faction abilities, but poor Ombur had trouble enough casting spells (as usual for this specific Reven player). He has promised to pick up Kiakara and give Varaug a break, next time he fields a warlord.

2. Tomb Guards rock even better than I thought. Their Dis 9 is no waste of points, surprisingly. Well worth taking over Awakened (but they are adept).

3. The archers aren't worth 41 points in our experience, since they die too easily to enemy archers and/or magic (and their RAV 1 isn't good enough to be effective snipers).

4. At 1,000 points I'd likely add more Tomb Guards and maybe Netikerti. 1,250 and over would likely mean Tariq plus 3 Awakened and a 3rd Avatar.

Generally, I think a good time was had by all, and next week we're gunning for our first team-game (2 versus 2) as well as a scenario I'm working on. So, if you're in central Ohio - come on over :).

Nice report there Lynx.

The Khamsin archers really are too expensive, especially given that Nefso seem to be able to cross the table pretty well. One thing they (and all other factions) can do that I rarely see players do is put a bunch of high DV grunts in front of the archers, then have the grunts move out of the way, shoot with the archers, then have the grunts move back. That way the archers won't receive archery in return (at least until the grunts are killed off). This would be extremely effective with Tombguards.

Anyone using Dervishes? If so, how do they perform?

I use the dervishers sparingly because 32 pt soldiers can add up. I always mix them in a troop with Awakened for protection against range attacks and a few Herdsmen to lend support. With #MA 2 and MAV 2 support goes a long way.

Khamsin Rangers are pricy for their stats, but range ability is important when going up against flyers or fast moving models. With the exceptin of Netikerti, its all Nefsokar has ... until the mounted archers arrive :;):

If I was going to jump into this faction here is exactly what I would buy in order:

1) Avatar (Who doesn't like this model as the centre piece of even relatively small Nefsokar forces)

2) Tariq (Hands down one of the best Sgt models in the game, his ability to bring an Elite to the field is extremely rare)

3) 2 x Tomb Guards (The best pound for pound adept model the Nefsokar can bring to the table, high defence and decent MAV)

4) Fatima (What can I say, I love clerics, and this model is just fantastic looking; plus if you get Tariq you'll soon want an Elite that he can haul along)

5) 2 x Dervishes (I just like the way they look, I've not seen them on the board, they look a little pricey, but I think under proper cicumstances they'd perform well)

6) Mi-Sher (The model isn't all that appealing to me, but 66 points for MAV 3 #ME 2 Warmaster is a good deal)

7) 2 x Rangers (Archer add an extra deminsion to any force, they are expensive I admit, but put them in with Tariq and load him up with a few bless spells and they arn't terrible)

8) Khadath (Another Warmaster)

9) Reborn (Yet anoither Warmaster)

10) Netikerti (I like Magic, and she is actually one of the cheaper level 3 Mages around, plus she has defensive magic, which isn't all that common and can be useful).

Anyway some thoughts. I'm leaning towards starting this faction once the faction book comes out, I'd like to try my had at an all Khamsin force, no undead allowed.
