Let's talk about...

The Ronin.

Range: 32 RAV: 4 DV: 12 Mov: 10

DA: 2 IA: 1

SA's: Shielding, AOE/2, Hunter

Cost: 408 points

Role: Battlefield Superiority

SyRaM "rival": Hawk 6

Is it worth it? How do you view the Ronin? Does it have a place in your UFF force or is this a watered down version of the Hawk 6? Any good Ronin stories?

My thoughts:

Looks: I definitely like the sculpt, it's anime-ish but not to overboard (I think the gauss cannons do a good job of balancing the anime out) I also like the pop up missile battery. Not a huge fan of the knee "guard/horn" thingies though. Although I don't think they take anything away from the model.

Performance: I really haven't had much luck with the Ronin... BUT I haven't used it a whole lot either.

Final Thoughts: This would definitely be my Battfield Superiority CAV of choice if I were a MT fanatic or running an all MT force. However, as far as bang for the buck... I'm not convinced it's a better buy then the Hawk 6. For 15 points cheaper the Hawk 6 gives you an extra missile attack as well as ESM and WSO (that's huge) at the same range and speed. Granted RAV is 1 less but that could be made up in upgrades. I also think the enhanced "Run n Gun" option more then makes up for the lost RAV. Overall I see it as a decent run of the mill Superiority CAV. I think it would be more potent in it's role by replacing the IA with a MA.

I like the Ronin a lot. I consider it an excellent companion FOR the Hawk 6, 2 Ronins and 2 Hawk 6's make for a very dependable and hard hitting platoon. Back them up with Falcons and Regents, supported by T-birds and you have a NASTYYY strike force. 2 Raptors and 2 Talons give you excellent scout support.

4 Naginatas, 4 Wolves and 4 Ashigarus backed up by Tsukai transported Hvy Hunters and Hvy Mortars and you have the essence of the GhostWarriors. I am only waiting to add Dingoes and Ryoshis to fill out my ground combat force. I also field 4 each of Harpies, Tsuisekis and Kikyus. ::D:

bottom line, Ronin or Hawk 6? :blues:

like choosing btw blondes and redheads :poke:^_^

I wish I was playing in games big enough to support that kind of strike force! Just the Ronin/Hawk 6 and Talon/Raptor Platoons come out to 2700 points and change.

I can see the Ronin as a decent "wingman" for a Hawk 6. The extra RAV raises your long range chance to hit percentage a bit. And the IF allows for return fire for those pesky "out of LOS" attackers... BUT given it's intended role I still think the Hawk 6 is the better buy. Especially since I don't want a "wingman" CAV costing more then the unit it's supporting.

It's not a "bad" CAV... just a bit "ho-hum" IMO.

And (as in real life) given the choice between a blond (Ronin) and a redhead (Hawk 6) I'll take the redhead everytime... :B):

Actually the previous post is my entire Terran force, we are in the middle of a campaign in which my Terran

force just pounded the snot out of the Rach on Vesta, capturing myTHIRD Tyburinum mine. I also have two Tantalum mines at present.

As for the ladies, I also choose redheads (my flavor is Ronin however) ::D::blush::rolleyes:

Okay Legionnaire's, help me out here. I recently got to thinking about what sort of "official" music you might find in the UFF and I came up with a few favorites:

-Panzerlied ( The song the Germans sing in the movie The Battle of the Bulge )

-Blood on the Risers (unofficial, just fun to sing)

-Scotland the Brave ( greatest music to march too ever )

-Ballad of Rodger Young

What others sort of turn your crank? Remember to think "globally" and not just American army. ::): There's a couple really good one's on the "We Were Soldiers" soundtrack too.

I knew nothing good was going to come of this when I checked the Forums and saw Crunch was the last poster in this thread... didn't you guys try to get a Rach only thread going... must be boring over there. :poke:

UFF music... hmmmm...

The last three or four minutes of the 1812 Overture is a good one.

As well as track 2 off the soundtrack CD of the movie that I refuse to call Starship Troopers

Definitely Scotland the Brave with bagpipes

Another good bagpipe one is Regimental March

Track 1 off the Wing Commander soundtrack

That's about all I can come up with right now...

This weeks topic...

The Katana

Range: 28, RAV: 3, DV: 11, Mov: 10

DA: 2, IA: 1, MA: 1

SA's: Shielding, AOE/2, Linked/2

DT's: 4

Cost: 306 points

Role: Battlfield Superiority

SyRaM "Rival": Hawk 5

My thoughts...

Looks: Hmmmm... there is a definite anime leaning here. Although that comes as no surprise as we are dealing with a Mitso-Ta model. The look of the cannons has been brought up before but I think they are ok, they flow well with the torso and the general "broad" feeling that the Katana has. My beef is with the missile pods... to me the two dissimilar pods take away from the flow of the model. Overall though, decent looks and its an easy starter CAV for paint jobs (huge points in my book!).

Performance: Hands down the best multi-role CAV in the Terran pool. Right off the bat you see that it's the only Terran model that is capable of attacking in all three modes. This makes for great battlefield flexibility. It's equally effective against armor, air and infantry. A "jack of all trades" model that does a great job of balancing capabilities without sacrificing to much in any one area. Linked/2 can be extremely effective as well. There is nothing better then missing the first shot and re-rolling for Link only to get that Perfect 10. :B): Plus this is all bundled into a package that only costs 306 points.

Final Thoughts: Given my experience with the Katana it has earned a permanent place on my SyRaM heavy roster. I like the flexibility that it gives a CAV platoon, especially against an opponent that is heavy on the combined arms. Head to head against the Hawk 5 shows two CAV's that are nearly equal, the Hawk 5 has the MA advantage with Hunter Warhead but the Katana gives you the option of an IA attack for those enemies that just won't give you LOS. Overall it comes down to personal play style when choosing between the two, as much as I like SyRaM models I tend to gravitate towards the Katana when forced to pick bewteen them. Plus that extra 16 points you save with the Katana may come in handy further down the road. I hope this is one unit that remains untouched in the final release of CAV2.

This is another Cav I like a lot, I just added another heavy platoon to my Century consisting of 2 Hawk Vs, an Archer and a Katana. I haven't had a chance to use the platoon yet, but I think it will be pretty effective.

So far I have decided that I really like the Hawk VI/Ronin combo for all around butt kicking. It IS a little expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for. I also have a support platoon of 2 Falcons and 2 Regents that my campaign opponents have taken to calling bad names. ::D: However, my absolute favorite platoon would have to be the 4 Horsemen, AKA 4 Thunderbirds w/ accurized, ergonomics, and AP gear. ::P:

The guns dominate the model, which I like. I agree on the missle-pods and perfer the "integrated" look

of the other M-T CAV....nice write up Crazy8.
