I know a few folks who'd be willing to do some swapping for figures (and they have vastly different tastes than I do)... Since I don't plan on playing the game by thier rules, I'm not too worried... But hey, can't we use theirs as npc's and cannon fodder? And the pc's would be reaper mini's. So it's WOTC vs. Reaper on our gaming table. I wonder who's gonna win at the end of the day.... Of course, what will happen is that certain enterprising types that own digital cameras will buy the randomized canisters and sell individual figures (or even groups of figures) on ebay. Now I know alot of you are down on Mage Knight and all the other clix games, but I personally enjoy them. Now if I want a real hardcore Tatctical Mecha combat game, I'll sit down and play CAV (I love CAV!!! Its what Classic Battletech should have been! :D ) But if I want some mindless fun with some ammount of tactics, I'll play Mechwarrior. ::Ducks as things are thrown his way:: To each his own I guess I look at them as two diffrent game systems, each has it own niche and are non exclusive. Jerry Trapspringer Posted April 3, 2003 Share Posted April 3, 2003 Not too crazy about it so far but there is a rumour running around the WotC site that they will be hard plastic like military/automotive models rather than the rubbery sort like MK. So they might be worth getting to repaint. I may pick up some of the cooler monsters. Kinda taking a wait and see attitude so far. I've got 15 unpainted Reaper Orcs (with about 10 more not purchased yet) that make up 3 distinct social groups in a quest I'm writing. But I don't mind, it gives me the chance to experiment with different armor styles and other cool Orc-like things. That also doesn't include their undead counterparts :D . haldir Posted April 5, 2003 Share Posted April 5, 2003 I got to thinkin the other day about these & my firm belief that I am not gonna buy these but then I got to thinkin, the "gameboard" would look better if I actually had a big owlbear out there fightin the pcs (which by the way are Reapers) instead of a plastic GW orc or elf. I might try a couple packs but the random thing is the one thing I can't stand, almost like ripping open a Magic pack & getting all 1/1 goblins. BAD Wizards BAD!! (one reason why I stopped getting Magic cards due to the crap you have to get just to get something good), probably be the case here as well ROCK ON REAPER!! Orsino Posted April 5, 2003 Share Posted April 5, 2003 I think WotC waited too late to get serious in the miniatures market, where they find too many competitors doing it better than they ever will--Hasbro having decided that only huge profits are good enough for them. WotC should probably stick to their own comfort zone: big markets where they have existing, enforceable monopolies, such as xD&D and Magic. Hmm. A M:tG miniatures game, that would perhaps be compatible with the CCG (as Chainmail was with D&D)? That's conceivable, and might appeal to the young briefcase gamers. Talking with some folks who have contacts inside Wizards leads me to believe that this is some kind of experiment, and will most likely go the way of Chainmail. They killed Chainmail before it even had a chance to start, since either WotC or Hasbro demanded immediate massive sales. You'd think they know their market by now . . . While I don't like the random pack idea, I figured that opened up a market for those of us who wanted to sell extras on eBay. If they are going to drop the line in 6 months unless it explodes that's just idiotic. How reliable are these contacts? Are they still capping the discount they give to retailers as well? Kheprera Posted April 14, 2003 Share Posted April 14, 2003 I dunno. The concept sketches are cool, but I still can't get real enthusiastic about the actual sculpts. They just aren't the quality I'm used to. In fact, of the few WoTC sculpts I have, even the really old Julie Guthrie Grenadiers I have (from late 70's early 80's era) are better sculpts. You'd think they know their market by now . . . The thing is they want a mass market success. They will keep trying and killing product ideas until it happens. And if it doesn't happen, the axe comes down and the wotc employees trade thier paychecks for pinkslips. And when wotc goes hasbro will fire a glob at layers at the SRD.
