Bullet Magnets?

Recommended Posts

One thing I've noticed about big, powerful, expensive solos, like the Hill Giant.

They attract a lot of attention, for several reasons.

1) They kick huge amounts of butt if you let them.

2) Their stat-lines are enough to scare the **** out of you.

3) They're often big, well-cast, and hopefully well-painted minis, so look imposing on the field.

Which means that, in general, they get mobbed and dragged down pretty quickly. By, in general, about a third to half of the opponent's army.

Anyone else had similar experience?

Anyone consider just letting them get mobbed, then Firestorming them? That huge base size makes them a nice target for it, and you'll take out a huge chunk of the opposing army.

Comments on similar uses for these monsters are welcome.

When I play, I try to field at least two good solo models and a troop that is hoss to attract attention. That way, they have at least two, if not three, units to watch out for. Then, while they're dancing around trying to figure out how to engage, the rest of my army moves in and cleans up. :B):

I do the firestorm your own solo thing alot. I like to use trolls. They look imposing, but at about 50 points each it is not so devastating to lose one in the process. That way i don't have to worry about sacraficing a huge solo like hilly or the avatar. I usually can manage to nab a whole troop in the process of bombing my solo.

Bone Horror and Shell of the Coffin.

Jareth

You wouldnt even really need the shell spell til after the BH has finally been hit a time or two. Starting at DV14, with deflect and flyer, means it will be sportin a DV17 against ranged attacks while flying. Yes, 10s always hit, but if you are using the shell while its still untouched then you are wasting your spell a bit..

Never threaten an opponents entire army with just one troll even if its Uru. Trust me it wont end well.

Sure it can, but I wouldn't waste Uru.

Example: I charge the troop of skeletons with a troll, kill 1 skeleton. Skeletons swarm my troll and rape the heck out of him. Troll is down and 6 skeletons are in base to base with where he was. Ssudai puts an f-storm in the middle of that group. 6 skeletons are crispy and dead. I killed 7 skeletons for only 127 points. He also lost a whole troop.

Example 2: I trot my troll out in front of that army in the general direction of the skeletons. Some archers put about 14 arrows into him and, needless to say, he is very dead. But you know what? That just means that Ssudai went for another turn without having 14 arrows stuck in his bum.

Example 3: I charge the whole army with that big mean troll of mine and only kill 2 grunts before I go down. I just broke even because that troll only costs 52 points and that is about the same as a pair of grunts.

sorry to give so many examples, but once i started they just kept coming.

One of the best bets i'd say is a krung beast. sure it 185 points but with a DV13+deflect and still DV10+deflect when on his 3rd damage track he is one tuff pin cushin, haveing once survived 2 rounds of 14 elven arrows without a single scrach. then when he gets to there front line they try to swarm, horrid stopping 1/4 and 3 defencive strikes and throw in a t'kay and maybe a few grunts to slow any actual threats and there's half the battle won!!

p.s. i like my krung beasts

...or they roll all tens the first round and you are out your points before you have a chance to use it.

the easyest way to avoud this is don't verse Brushmaster. I swear if he needes the dice to land balacing on the 9 and 5's edge he'll roll it balacing on the 9 and 5's edge.

See, now there's a nice easy way to handle solos and larger elites. His name is Sir Damon :P. No more wasting multiple models on taking down that one big guy, and then Sir Damon will hopefully still be in good enough condition to get some heals.
and as he looks over the lifeless body of the fallen solo he just used his past 4-6 attackes to take down he watches as he in turn is pulled down by 6-9 grunts that were a good "turn or two" away.

beacause isn't this what topic was about using the solo's to divert attacks and then later it was disided that the best use was as bait for one of those traps with the nice springy sound to them.
