Dalth
I REALLY WANT TO GET HER OFF MY BENCH!!!! Unlike everyone else who posts here, expect perhaps for one person... I really do not want you to ever finish this mini... Although it really correct to call Cinder a mini? Is that same as jumbo shrimp? I of course have a very good reason for not wanting you to finish Cinder. That being once you do then it will be used in our D&D game as an combat mini, which would be bad for the health of my character. Or worse, he shows up and I do what I've always done to your major dragons, and other NPC's... Which is roll several 20's in a row, and kill it on the first round of combat, then listen you whine and mope because all your carefully crafted plans and painting was wasted on a 30 second encounter... Which would be just as bad in the long run for the health of my character. ;) But with all that said it's looking very good still.
Jabberwocky
Query, now that you've worked on a few other things inbetween, are there bits that you look at and go "oh, since I did the Chimera, I know that _______ works better. I wish I had...." ? As a SLOW painter that will leave projects unattended for months I know I do that all the time. I am frequently tempted to strip a mini and just start fresh with my new "l33t skilz" , but so far the desire to just get the mini done is stronger than the desire to strip and start over, mostly because of how long it would take me to get back to the point I stripped...and then by that point I made have improved again... Back on topic--Cinder looks great, TS. I really like the wings! Giter dun! *Cheers*
JimL
Awesome and those wings are unbelieveable! WOW!
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted April 13, 2009 Author Moderator Share Posted April 13, 2009 yeah, she's beautiful. Query, now that you've worked on a few other things inbetween, are there bits that you look at and go "oh, since I did the Chimera, I know that _______ works better. I wish I had...." ? Not in so many words, no. Originally, I had intended to do the spotting on the wings that I did on the Chimera on Cinder, but once I got the base highlighting done, I realized that I liked them so much that I didn't even consider it further. It is probably why I did that on the chimera though because I still wanted to try it. A lot of my current techniques, I really mastered while working on Cinder (nothing like repetition to drive a skill home). Other than using glazes, I was already using all my current techniques when I painted her, and it still isn't too late for some glaze work. Seriously, I am not totally satisfied with Cinder's belly scales. They turned out too yellow and not gold enough. I am thinking of glazing them back to a golden color. This should give them more depth as well. Thanks, Andy
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted April 14, 2009 Author Moderator Share Posted April 14, 2009 Major Milestone Reached! I just finished all of the basic painting on the dragon. All highlighting is done. All parts are covered. All I have left is some darklining, a few touch-ups, maybe a couple of added lighting adjustments, and possibly a glaze on the belly (though I am still debating this). But on the whole I have done every feature of her. I expect to get her completely done tomorrow or Thursday, leaving only the Base left to be painted (I am saving the Base completely for last as it is necessary to touch it as I paint her). I am so stoked! I can see the light and it isn't a train coming. I should be completely finished with her by or before the end of the month! Look out Dalth, here she comes! Moderator TaleSpinner Posted April 21, 2009 Author Moderator Share Posted April 21, 2009 OK, sorry there were no pictures last weekend. I just couldn't get good lighting for the shots in time, and then I threw my back out again and didn't bother trying the rest of the weekend. I did do the following on her last week: 1. Highlighted the back spines up to Clear Red. 2. Added a Clear Red highlight layer as needed on most of her red scales. This really made the red scales pop. 3. Darklined everything with Brown Liner/Bloodstain Red. 4. Glazed the belly scales with Chestnut Brown. They turned very slightly more golden now. 5. Touched up everything. So the dragon herself is done! Yesterday, I basecoated the rocks with 2 coats of Weathered Stone/Driftwood Brown. I then washed them with Brown Liner. The rest of this week I'll be highlighting the rocks and I hope to have everything painted and flocked by the end of the weekend. Then I just have to get enough lights and a backdrop to photograph her (the outside thing really wasn't working well for me). I have 6 spotlights I can surround her with, I just have to get it setup. I think I am going to use a beige T-shirt for a backdrop. Andy

Andy I think a white background would be better, then if you have to adjust your color balance in photoshop you know exactly what is pure white. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted April 27, 2009 Author Moderator Share Posted April 27, 2009 She's done. I am happy with her. The only issue I have with her now is that one wing and the ankles still have a very slight wobble in them. this became much more pronounced while photographing under the hot lights. I know that this was an issue before, and is still a hold over from when I dropped her. There are no cracks in the paint and everything seems to be holding, though I'd be a lot happier if there was no movement. Once I get her to the display location, that will likely be where she stays, so Kreve and Dalth can breathe easily for I doubt I'll ever use her in play. She's too fragile to cart around. Thanks all for your support over the past three years. I really appreciated it. It is amazing how good it feels to have her done. Kreve Lavelle
I of course have a very good reason for not wanting you to finish Cinder. I am certain we will be steeling ourselves for the many encounters we have with this mini. I will be providing cover fire for you as you charge crazily up and meet it. I doubt i'll be using her in game, maye once for a really "special" encounter.
