Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 18, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted July 18, 2006 Good evening, Well, I have been struggling with what to do with the horns. I've also been a bit too busy to do much painting, so Cinder has sat, and I have obsessed about the horns. So, tonight, I thought I'd try an idea I had on the other horn. I think I like this, though I did it a bit too fast and will need to touch it up a bit. I also only did the lower part of the horn, as I go up I intend for the striations to merge, and, up near the tip of the horn, it will not have any dark brown at all. So what do you think of this pattern vs the pattern on the other horn vs the smooth look? TS
Mr.Wizard
I like this pattern, because it makes the dragon look a bit more plausible. I like it so much that I may give it a try on my minis, if that's alright.
Evilbob
Holy Dragon Bat-dude. Cinder is looking Awesome TS. I personally like the bigger/chubbier horn stripes. Keep up the good work.

Moderator TaleSpinner Posted August 1, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted August 1, 2006 I like this pattern, because it makes the dragon look a bit more plausible. I like it so much that I may give it a try on my minis, if that's alright. Thanks, you couldn't give me a better compliment than that. I'm painting the horn stripes right now. I painted over everything I had done before and am starting over. What I am now doing is very close to the chubby stripes in the pict above, but I rewroked the background color a bit and am being a bit less sloppy on the stripes (this is for real after all). Thanks for all the input. I should have another update by the end of the week, depending on how much painting time I manage to squeeze into this week. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted August 4, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted August 4, 2006 Hello again, All right, enough messing around testing horn patterns. I got down to business this week and got them painted. First, I painted over all my tests with Muddy Brown and then glazed that with Brown Liner to give me the following: Next, I layered in a Muddy Brown/Earth Brown mix: Then Earth Brown: I added the stripes using the Earth Brown/Leather Brown mix : Then a layer of Leather Brown: At this point, I felt I needed more lighter shades, so I made a blend of Leather Brown/Tanned Leather and a pot of Tanned Leather for my highlight: I added the Leather Brown/Tanned Leather highlight: And finally, I finished it off by hitting the highlights with the Tanned Leather: Thats all for now. I'll probably start on the belly scales tonight. Thanks for the advice on the horn tests and let me know what you think of the finished horns. Have a good night, TS
Jabberwocky
Great work on the horns!!
Spatula
The horn pattern looks "marvelous", can't see the hi-lites in the photo. Some of the "flesh" colors work well on the "tan browns" as hi-lites.
pogre
The horns turned out very well.

Moderator TaleSpinner Posted August 27, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted August 27, 2006 Greetings, Well, I come today with a heavy heart once more, though this time nothing has happened to Cinder; my camera died. For one reason or another, the image sensing chip is no longer sending signals to the rest of the camera. I may get it fixed, if possible, but that will probably cost as much as buying a new one. At any rate it won't be cheap. However, I don't want to hang up on this WIP here either, so I am going to vacuum seal the paints I have mixed for Cinder and shelve her until I can save up enough money for a new camera. I really loved that camera too, and the new version of it, now is unsuitable for mini use since its highest F-stop is a 5.2. I alway use 8. To get that, one needs to put at least $300+ into the purchase (though I am still looking through the endless list of camera specs). I'm really bummed right now. So see you in a few months, TS PS: I may post a few finished works in the show off section in this time as I will be able to borrow the work camera on occasion, but not regularily enough to take shots of the WIP. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted August 27, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted August 27, 2006 Hello again, Well, I am much happier now. I had contacted Canon about the problem with my camera, and they got back to me this morning (Sunday!). My camera has a faulty CCD Processor. This is a known new problem with some of the older PowerShots. Regardless of warranty, they are going to fix it free of charge. They are even sending me a special mailer so I don't have to pay postage. I am sure it will still take a month or two to get through the process, but at least it won't cost me anything and I'll get my camera back. I love this camera and was really bummed at the thought of finding something else. This is one of those moves by a company that has turned a bad situation and an angry customer into a very satisfied and happy one. I love doing business with companies that care about their customer's and their reputations. So Canon now joins Reaper on my short list of GREAT companies. So I'll still be out of action for a month or two with this WIP, but it will give me a break from the big girl and let me paint up a couple of other minis on my bench.
