The Green Knight
It looks great! It's going to be awesome when it's finished. Oh, by the way, I'm going to resume Cpt. Olaf again (wink wink).
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted September 11, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted September 11, 2006 It looks great! It's going to be awesome when it's finished. Oh, by the way, I'm going to resume Cpt. Olaf again (wink wink). Thanks, but I think your last comment was a bit fishy (sorry, everyone--inside joke). Well, the camera has successfully arrived at Canon and I am waiting to hear from them. Meanwhile, I'm working on the Cloak Fiend and trying not to sneeze in my paints as I attempt to fight off the first cold of the season. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted September 13, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted September 13, 2006 I just got word from Canon. They have my camera and have checked it. It is the faulty CCD Processer that we expected. They say that they will fix it free of charge and should have it back to me by sometime in the middle of next week. Well, I guess I better get the cloak fiend done this week, so I can hop back onto Cinder next week. TS
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 18, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted October 18, 2006 Well, my camera came in from Canon. It turns out that they couldn't fix my old camera, so they sent me a new one (a PowerShot A520). It is a 3 to 4 model upgrade from my old one (A70). Now thats good customer service . I spent the last two weeks figuring out the new camera (it has a lot more features than my old one) and finishing the Cloak Fiend. Tonight I successfully photographed the finished Cloak Fiend and will get back to working on Cinder tomorrow night. ...and there was much rejoicing! Thanks for your continued patience. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 28, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted October 28, 2006 Greetings, I finally found time to sit down and finish up Cinder's belly scales. These took me a quite a lot of time, though I am not sure how long exactly due to the whole camera malfunction fiasco. Let's just say that holding this mini upside down for hours at a time is a real pain in the wrist . I haven't touched up the areas on the red scales where I slopped a bit of gold yet. I'll do that later when I revisit the red. I want to add more orange highlights to the lower red scales anyway. Only one picture tonight, it's a bit tough filming her underside: Hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think. I'll likely move up to her head and concentrate on detailing her mouth next. Have a great day, TS
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted November 2, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted November 2, 2006 Good morning, I finished the mouth yesterday (or at least as far as I am likely to go before the touch-up phase). For the mouth, I mixed 3 shades using the Rose and Bruise triads. In retrospect, I should have had 5 shades. I ended up having to wet blend between the second and third shade. Also, I made an extra runny mix of Brown Liner and Earth Brown to wash the mouth. For the teeth, I made my typical carnavore mix, using the Yellow Triad, the Ochre Golds Triad, and Linen White (awesome color). The following are 7 progressive shots of the mouth: Base coat: Wash: Layering the mouth and teeth: Finished After reviewing these shots, I think there are a couple of areas I want to take a closer look at and maybe touch up later, but I am satisfied for now. Next, I am going to finish the rest of the head. I am excited about this because it will likely bring her to life for me. Have a good day, TS

Moderator TaleSpinner Posted November 6, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted November 6, 2006 Greetings, I was painting Cinder's head last night, and in the process of moving her around to get at all of the nooks and crannies, I noticed a sight wobble in her. At first, I thought her base must be coming loose from the holder, but upon checking that I realized it was secure. It turns out that the rocking was caused by her left ankle joint starting to come loose . I assume that this is due to damage from when I dropped her and it just took this long for it to really loosen up. The right leg looks fine and doesn't wobble at all. Now you will recall that these legs are held on with pins running up through the bottom of the base. The pin hasn't loosened, and I can see no sign of it starting to pull away; however, this doesn't stop the joint in the ankle itself from cracking and allowing her to wobble. I once read a review of Cinder by someone else (Frosch maybe?) that said she has weak ankles, and I think I have to agree, though I think it is more that she is so heavy and leans so far forward that the ankles take a lot of stress. Looking closely at the ankle, you can see a crack running around the back side of the leg. So, to fix this, without totally scrapping her and starting over, I put two pins in at oblique angles, each crossing the joint. The following pictures show the placement of each pin. After drilling, I packed the holes with 5-min epoxy and inserted the pins, doing one at a time and snipping the extra off when cured. The following picture shows the final result from her left side. Once the epoxy has fully cured and I am sure that I don't need more pins, I'll smooth off the pin ends with my Dremel, sculpt, and prime as needed. Let's hope that this is the last mishap I have with this dragon. I'm getting tired of fixing her. Have a good night, TS
mattmcl
Heck, leave the pin in and paint it like a spear. I'm learning SO much from reading this, thanks a ton for documenting.
Sergeant_Crunch
That sucks about the ankles, but I am glad to see you continue to work on her.
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted November 6, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted November 6, 2006 That sucks about the ankles, but I am glad to see you continue to work on her. For about 10 seconds after discovering the problem, I sat and stared at her, seriously contemplating throwing her at high speed into the cement wall of my basement. As satisfiying as that would have been, I also remembered how much time I had put into her already and I took a deep breath and figured out what I needed to do to fix her. She'll be worth it when I am done. I just keep telling myself that. TS
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted November 16, 2006 Author Moderator Share Posted November 16, 2006 Good evening, Well, I finished painting her head over the past week, one layer at a time. I don't really have a lot to say about this that the pictures won't show, so without further ado: And finally, a few more highlights and dark lining: I will likely take a break from her for a little while now as I build a toy rack for my niece for Christmas. That shouldn't take me more than a couple of weeks, and I hope to have another Cinder update before Christmas yet. Take care, TS
