pae
Don't get me wrong, I love the painted showcase on this site, and I wish there were more figures in it. Having said that, I've found that I end up inadvertently copying alot of the things that I see there. I'm not a very imaginitive guy, and have a heck of a time coming up with color schemes for figures. So let me relate something that happened to me last night. (Some things left blank so that I can kind of preserve some anonymity for the Reaper Con painting contest coming up). There I was painting [fill in the name of a nice mini by a great sculptor], and thinking that I had a great color scheme for it. But as I was getting further and further along, it started to look more and more familiar. I wondered why...then I started browsing the painted showcase. There [fill in pronoun for the mini] was -- a great paintjob by [fill in the name of a great painter], with a very similar color scheme. Now this is turning out to be a pretty nice paintjob, but if I enter it in the contest, I'm afraid that some judges will think that I'm just trying to copy [painter]'s work, when I'm really not. Oh well...at least I had a couple of backups in mind for this particular category, so maybe I'll be able to come up with something more original on those. Anyone else ever have this problem? Or am I alone here.
Super Administrators kit Posted March 10, 2006 Super Administrators Share Posted March 10, 2006 So is it going to be more or less trouble for you as we add more figures? kit
Erion
You're not alone. I often find myself mimicing the paint jobs I see on figures in company galleries (not just reaper). I look at it as a way to improve my skills by giving myself somoething to work towards. I also find that after nearly six years of painting minis, I'm able to do a lot more things well than I was when I first started because I took the time to mimic the great ones. Now, when I do something on my own I'm much more likely to do it well.
skavenbabe
I'll actually use the gallery sometimes to see what it was done up in, so I can do something different.

Rastl
I use the painted gallery to get an idea what parts of the figure are supposed to be. Glove or hand? Look in the gallery! And remember, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Color schemes are difficult to develop so if you find one you like go with it! ReaperShaun
In art/theatre design classes in school we were often told to copy everything and do something to make it your own. I find this works well in the miniature hobby.
joshuaslater
Sound advice. That's why all those art students labor over drawing/painting what they see. No shame in copying a color scheme for a mini. For an amateur like myself, in the "quick and dirty" school of mini painting, I'm lucky if I even come close to the pic! I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. Cheers.
Spatula
Anyone else ever have this problem? Oh yeah...because there is a limited number of "lion-hide" triads , I was able to paint the "Cely-Lion" very similiar to Anne's "Gallery" mini. Vil-hatarn
I wouldn't worry about it--miniatures painted in "official" color schemes (the closest Reaper has to official are the data card pics, but they make a point of that not being really official, so this is mostly with other companies) win stuff, so this would be even less of a problem. The judges probably won't even realize it. Sorry about the long parentheses; I'm not doing very well at being coherent today.
Reaper User Vaitalla Posted March 14, 2006 Reaper User Share Posted March 14, 2006 In reality, actually, it's entirely likely the judges *will* recognize similarities, Vil...because the judges are the painters who've done stuff for our Painted Showcase. However, it should be stated that even if Flynn copied a mini from the gallery color for color, it would not count against him at all, because any such mimicry is not taken into account either for or against in the scoring. --Anne
pae
Thanks Anne...the good news is, I've changed the color scheme a bit, so now it doesn't look nearly as much as the version in the painted showcase. In fact, it doesn't look much like it at all. :-)
