Orchid_Noir Posted March 15, 2006 Author Share Posted March 15, 2006 I can understand something like "everytime one of you crazy peasants annoys me with your "medieval talk", you have to scrub a toilet , do the dishes, do 100 push-ups, or perform some sort of tiring or degrading action." But destroying thier possessions? That seems a bit far. That is permanent damage. Once you clean the toilet a few timnes, your lesson will be learned, but you can't fix a ripped shirt, broken plate, or a smashed mini. I don't think it the fact that she broke a miniature in particular that bothers me so. It is instead the kind of attitude which condones that behavior. Actually, not even that much creativity was involved. Reality shows were popular on Japanese TV long before they hit the US. I remember watching an anime tape -- from the late-80s or early 90s -- that included part of a show in which a bunch of people plus TV camera went to someone's house to wake them up in the morning. One should always be suspicious of the things that make it to the screen on reality shows. I agree that if we want our friends to accept our hobby, then we do one of several things. Let them see it enough to understand it, or find friends who are accepting of it. Me, I present the hobby differently to different peeps. Some people know I paint the stuff. As far as perceptions, I came to peace with my inner geek in junior high and decided that people were either going to accept me as I am or they wouldn't. I'm not shy about my interests and would happily spend all day talking about them with anyone who's willing. I'm just lucky that I found a job that has a lot of people with the same interests as I do and can find an RPG or wargaming group I can hook up with just about anywhere I'm stationed. The media hasn't helped the public perceptions that all gamers are wierd or worship Satan. On the otherhand, I think that by hiding what we enjoy we allow these misperceptions that based on a minority of gamers to persist. So I say be yourself and let the chips fall where they may. I REALLY don't get why the family LET her smash their property...did she do it when no one was around, or right in front of them? Does no one in that family have a backbone?? My guess (based on what I read on the ABC website) is that the setup is that the swapped "wife" is supposed to change everything about a family to meet what she would expect of her real family. And, the "new" family, no doubt encouraged by the producers, is encouraged (or required) to take submit (though not necessarily quietly). Maybe the family did blow up about the mini, but they didn't air that portion (though it seems like they would). Or, maybe they were smart enough to realize that blowing up would just play into the hands of the producers and really look like "crazed D&D freaks" on national television. Remember that reality shows aren't really about reality: they're about telling a story around something that may have happened. There was apparently a situation later in the show where the son and "swapped wife" had it out face to face without the father there, but I didn't catch that part. It's not just "reality shows" that are heavily edited, even the local news does it. Any time anyone is around you with a camera just assume that they will show whatever you don't want shown... The reporter is then legally allowed to snip out the "yes" or "no" and only show that. So a response of "yes, one could say that, but I strongly disagree" can legaly be turned into simply "yes". Unless of course the company's was brought up during the show, I didn't watch it.
