Moderator Froggy the Great Posted March 14, 2006 Moderator Share Posted March 14, 2006 I made this by blasting some insulation foam with Krylon spray primer, then mounting it on a cd-rom. Halbarad is just there for scale, not thematic influence. It's missing something though. Anyone have any suggestions? This was a method test for another peice so I don't mind making major modifications.
Vil-hatarn
Runes on the top ring would look pretty cool--either on the sides or top. Maybe some blood-red gems? Or a combination of both. That, or the simple way--ancient bloodstains and maybe a little plant growth, make it look overgrown.
dargrin
Plant growth. It needs a mud line if it is outside. Moss or a little static grass in some of the cracks. I would even would try to add some scrape marks to the top or sides to look like something either came out or was dragged in.
garm
Some of the tentacles from the well of doom that can be removed at you mood?
Vil-hatarn
I'd leave off the tentacles; leave the possible inhabitant(s) to the viewer's imagination...though some scrape marks would definitely be in order.
Qwyksilver
I'd leave off the tentacles; leave the possible inhabitant(s) to the viewer's imagination...though some scrape marks would definitely be in order. Claw marks/gouges on the outer lip as if something big and nasty has pulled itself out would work nicely. Just take the claws from the Burrowing Horror, and press them into the foam for a good imprint. Some vines creeping up the side would be great. Maybe some stains/discoloration along the lip. From ichor, blood, ectoplasm, mildew, slime, acid, bile, etc. Put it between the claw marks. Maybe make a grappling hook out of a fishing lure, the rustier the better. One of the 3 prong ones. Hook it to the lip of the pit with some rope descending into it. You could easily hook it to one of the pitted pieces. Either have the rope dangling over the edge, snapped off, or leave it intact and appearing to go deeper into the pit. Depending on how bloodthirsty you want to be, grind off the sharp bits to it doesn't get imbedded in a hapless player.
ReaperShaun
If it is a well it could use the bucket lowering device on the top with a hand crank or something. Or the remenants of one. I like the scrape marks too though. Scrape marks on the side of the well with a little doll or something. make it look like something tragic happened there. Stubbdog
See I go back and forth between: I like it a bunch just the way it is to Either thos claw mark idea of some form of runes on like every other stone along the bottom row chisseled into the stones, something like that. I could also see modifying it in a major way and making it look something like this: (will upload a picture when I get home tonight and edit this post - so check back)
mlavanish
I think it looks really cool, and I love the cloudy effect in the bottom. I would give up on it being a conventional well. The size and shape make it impossible for this use. However it would work well as some sort of pit or duct, or other architecture. For me the color of the stone is much too homogenous. Some discoloration around the base from plant growth would be great, as would plants or vines on the side. Maybe even washing over it with some different colored inks, or on individual stones would make it seem more constructed (as opposed to carved). Runes or ancient writing would be nice if you wanted to go that route. Even some sort of carved stonework band around the top or between the 2 layers of rock would dress it up and make it more interesting. Please share how you made the smoke effect in the bottom. SaintRigger
Got your msg. I'd probably thin down some paint and give it a wash in areas - like maybe rivulets or something - to give it a more weathered look. Some moss or vines would be neat as well. Other than that, it's really brilliant (like most of your other work)
mooseyjoe
Try this on for size. Cut a hole in the bottom, then cut a hole in your gaming table. Then run a tube from a fog machine into the bottom of "THE PIT". Finally, Make a demon that can rise out of the hole, that way it will be just as nasty as it looks. axegrrl
I'd suggest a couple of options, depending on if it's smoke/heat or steam/fog coming up out of the well: For steam/fog/water moisture: I would suggest some areas of green slimy stuff growing on the inside walls of the thing: if it's damp, green algae-like gunk will grow there. I'd use a brush-on gloss medium over the slime areas. For smoke/heat: I would suggest "burn marks" or sooty areas around the rim and on the inside walls. Sergeant_Crunch
You could pull some cotton balls apart and place inside the well so that it appears as if smoke/steam is rising out of it. Has the added bonus of being a removable effect.

But, if you're gonna go all out, you might as well get one of those spooky sounds Halloween CDs/tapes with monster noises and random screaming. Attach it under the table with the fog machine, then put a small pillow over the speaker to muffle the sound a bit.
styates
I agree that what it needs most is some sort of weathered effect on the outside to make it look ancient. Other than that it is extremely awesome!!
