underling
I play Darkspawn. Now that that's cleared up, what incentive is there for me to purchase the other faction books other than to enrich my gaming experience? Is there anything other than Life Transfer that I can use? ladystorm
a lot of players who only play one faction wish to be more well rounded by knowing all the options, if you wish to stick to the core rules and your faction's book, there is no reason why you couldn't be successful. Is there anything other than Life Transfer that I can use? yes.
Erion
1) Know your enemy. 2) The Crusader book, in particular, mentions the Darkspawn quite a bit I believe. There was that bit where they tunneled under Denelspire...
wildbill
I play the Dwarves and have no intention of playing any of the factions that are currently in print. But, I own all of the books. Why? Just like Erion said: know your enemy. Do I know those books as intimately as I will the Dwarf book when it arrives? No, probably not. But at least I'll have a clue of what I could face in a tournament or pick up game! Wild Bill
GreyHorde
A good general knows his/her enemies, but there is also something to be said for the tension of playing 'off the cuff', seeing what your opponent brings to the table. 'Fog of War', gathering intelligence on the fly and a lack of spies/scouts create drama when a new model, spell or ability suddenly appears. If you battle enough against several other factions to learn their strengths and weaknesses, great, more power to you. If, on the other hand, you're like me and have precious little time to actually play, learning about other factions only through experience may not be a good option. Since I also plan to eventually play more than one faction, getting more advanced detail on the others allows me to get hooked...errr...make better, more informed decisions earlier on. It's also nice to have them on hand for pickup games, inviting battle with a friend who may not have his/her book, etc. Just my $0.10.... Vil-hatarn
Chances are I'll stick to my elves, but I'll probably pick up the faction books at one point or another--not really for the rules, even; but because of the extra background. airhead
To learn the new spells & equipment and things that will be coming at you...(I guess that is the same as knowing your enemy.)
joshuaslater
I plan on grabbin' em just for the background. I promised myself I'd start another army if I can get one painted first, but the books are Reaper quality (great) and it won't hurt havin'em around. Tsetsen Muur
Don't tell my players but I've been using Taltos (slightly changed) as a game universe in GURPs for about a year... The thing about faction books is they can provide entertainment in the game in 5 minute increments. Sometimes, this is all you have when you have a 16 month old. The Tabletop General who knows his own forces but not those of his enemy, will be successful in one half of his battles. The Tabletop General who knows his enemy, but not his own forces, will be successful in half of his battles. If you buy all of the faction books and study theirs as well as yours, you will be more successful....or something like that.
