Greetings all,

I've been working on this mini during my lunch breaks at work for the last month or so. If you've been following my WIP on Cinder, you'll know what I've been doing in the evenings. Well, I got to a point with Cinder that I figured I had better finish Jolie to make room in the paint case for the dragon (I never paint more than one mini at a time; a little AR rule of mine).

I converted and painted Jolie as one of my wife's D&D characters. The character is a very proper young lady (think Jane Austen type character), and as such I had to sculpt a full dress over Jolie's bare leg.

I must say, Werner did an awesome job on this mini, but man she was one of the most challenging minis I have ever painted. Those ribbons and the embroidery were almost nightmarishly difficult to get the paint to go where I wanted it to go and not to slip down into adjoining sections. My eyes hurt. I kept imagining Werner watching me, laughing as I cursed over my latest slip of the brush.

There were a few firsts for me on this mini:

- First Werner Klocke mini :rolleyes:

- First time I used the dark lining technique instead of washes

- First time I attemped to sculpt cloth with green stuff

- First time I painted a mini before assembling it.

All in all, I am quite pleased with the way she turned out.

I am a little frustrated with the photos. The highlights in the gold trim on the outer dress do not stand out nearly as much as they do in real life. I'm not sure why. I did try to make these parts a bit less severely highlighted than I have seen others do as I wanted to avoid the NMM gold look. I view this trim as not metal but gold colored embroidery.

Anyway, enough rambling, on to the picts:

A close-up of my conversion, making her a proper lady :;): :

Well, let me know what you think.

Now, back to the dragon! Cinder's starting to get cross with me, and the last thing I need is a grouchy red dragon in the basement (even if she is just 10 inches tall).

I like the conversion, I think you did a very good job of it. I like the colour scheme a lot too. My favourite parts are the hair, and the book. Is the heraldry book related to your wife's character background also? I think the lips should have just a touch more colour. Although I'm sure a proper young lady wouldn't paint her face, she would likely have a bit more natural colour in her lips. Great job, I hope your wife loves it!

I'd say you got the colors right for an embroidery look but if you really want to make if feel a bit more embroideryish you could try a little bit of feathering all in the same direction out from the shadows on it. Give it a little texture. Cross hatch could work as well although it might be overkill on areas that small.

Very nice work. I really like the detail in the book. The blue could use another highlight, but the gold is right where it needs to be.

Thanks. I used the MSP Berone Blue triad mixed in 5 stages for the blue. I personally don't like really bright highlights, so I don't think I'll take it up any more.

Looks awesome. You did a great job converting the dress, though it looks like it should have been a little longer. The book is fantastic.

Yeah, the length of the dress has been bugging me lately. I originally sculpted it thinking that with her knee cocked and the heavy outerdress strip there, it would ride up over her shoe, but now I think it needed to be longer. Oh well, next time.

Nice work TS. Clean, crisp, good lines. Welcome to the Klocke side.

Thank you. I take this as high praise since a lot of your work has been my inspiration this past year.

It might be a while before I attempt another Klocke; I have to get my eye-balls adjusted first.::):

Yep, her character is a people specialist. She has made a career out of getting the most out of society. One thing she has studied is Heraldry and the local peoples. My wife specifically asked for the book to be a heraldry reference.

Although I'm sure a proper young lady wouldn't paint her face, she would likely have a bit more natural colour in her lips.

This is another one where it is more pronounced in real life. My wife was very clear that she didn't want her too "made-up", so I went with the Rose Triad blended with some of the skin tone for the lips. My wife likes them which is what counts. Personally, I would have made them a few shades darker, being a guy and all. :poke:

I have seen almost every mini you have ever painted. This one is in the top 5.

Great Job.

Bout time you join the boards! ::P: Welcome to the forum and thanks.

Aw man, that's a really good idea. I wish I had thought of it while I was working on the mini. <Must resist urge to redo. Looks at the mini and remembers how long that embroidery took in the first place. Urge is gone. :B): > I must keep this idea in the back of my head for the next "Lady" mini.

Thanks all for the compliments and the advice. I really appreciate it.

Have a great weekend,

TS
