Interesting Piece of Foam

Recommended Posts

Okay, I've got this nice piece of shipping foam, it's about 1.5 by 2 ft, a few inches tall (I'll get a picture up later today). It's pretty hard to describe, but it's shaped perfectly for some sort of fortification. The problem is, I want it to look elf-like, not dwarfish. At the moment, it's far too blocky to be elvish...

Any suggestions on elf fortresses in general until I get the pics up?

Ah, you've found the wonderful world of shipping foam.

I wonce turned a cd player pak (half of it that is) into a sailing ship that mini's could play on well. Sure it didn't look a lot like a ship, it was sorta square-ish, and I didn't plank the outside to make it water proof, but it makes a great pirate ship to this day.

Another foam pak turned into a temple - to which I added a foam ball (from inside a cheapo Christmas ornament). The ball on top formed a small dome...

For sci-fi props you need nothing but paint on some foam paks, but I share your pain with the Elf architecture issue.

Show us the picture. Someone is sure to have an idea. I'll most likely just suggest you use a faom cutter to carve swooping scallops out of it and try to aim for a spire-like look. hard to say though.

I almost wish I played WH40K; it's perfect for that. However, I'm aiming for anything usable by warhammer and/or warlord elves.

Ok.

Buy some blue foam in a plank. Cut it in squares that descend in size so that when you stack them, you get a tapering spire. Taper the spire in an eliptical arc or in a straight line- your choice.

The spire can stack in the squarish middle part of the Interesting Foam Piece (IFP).

The IFP has little butresses along the side already. Those need to have vertical extensions that rise to form flying buttresses for the central spire.

The central spire can either be made in an assembly of layers that can be taken apart one at a titme for game play, or you can make it one chunk.

When you're done, it could easily be a palace, wizard tower or temple. It will have a few flat places for mini play, and you can readily make props to detail the interior.

Gotta go, the boss expects me at work.

Could try to do something with butresses...would take a bit of work, but probably doable...I'm thinking it would work best if I gave the pillar a circular top to attach to. Might be a bit tricky "rotating" the mini butresses to match...

Something else I was thinking of was possibly having two or three arches crossing the whole structure, maybe with a beam connecting them

Qwyk: I agree; it would make a perfect battletech dropship. Or a bunker. Or anything else of that sort. But, at least at the moment, I don't play anything sci-fi. So it's either turn it into fantasy, or give it to my 40K playing friend.

I'd probably stick some cake pillars on the top, and a roof or large stone pieces to go over the pillars - cut some stairs and make it a fancy forum or temple maybe.

You can take some dead lead and paint them up as statues to put around the edges too.

I think with a bit of work, and you have a great forum. :)

Then save it until you play something SF again

I'm sure once CAV2 goes active we'll try to convert you :poke:

Elf fortresses... depends how Tolkien ya get with your elvsies... Something that looks "natural" for lack of a better word... Fluted... Art Deco...

Hrm... you think they'd live in A-Frames? or would that just be gnomes? heh...

Hmm...at the moment, I'm leaning towards a dome sort of structure; first, get cake pillars or the like and distribute them around the edges, and have them arch in to the central pillar making an open dome-like structure. Might have to check out some of the Hirstarts molds, they might be useful for this...could be a good excuse to get some.

Well, if I ever get around to actually building something, I'll post it. I have to finish a couple other WIP terrain pieces first though.

On further thought, I think I'm going to save it until CAV2 shows up. It just fits too well...and I have plenty of fantasy terrain projects already.

That was almost too easy :lol:
