Resisting the Siren's song

1). The current publishers have never focused on "Clickytech." CBT has been in constant publication with only perhaps a year or so hiatus. They are barred from writing any DA era books.

No matter how you want to phrase it, the storyline and focus of the game moved away from CBT and the into the crummy ClickyTech miniatures and the horrid Dark Age stories. Sure the old CTB stuff is mostly still in print AFAIK, but nothing new is being added to that era. I admit I have not really kept up with the game for a while, but since the "Phoenix" resculpts, I don't think there has been many (any?) truly new CBT miniatures released for years, has there?

Incorrect. There has been a whole new TRO (TRO: 3075, introduces post 3067 designs, as well as designs from the Age of War), and supporting minis line from IWM. Also incorrect that there has been nothing new added (Jihad storyline, but beyond that we got Historicals: War of 3039, Handbook series to replace the old House books, as well as a number of other products). There's plenty of new stuff that has come out or is in the pipeline.

I enjoyed the old CBT fiction for what it was, fluff and back story for a game I enjoyed. Some of the books were better than others but none of it was really great fiction and I never would have read more than the first book or two if it wasn't for the game tie-in. As far as the current Dark Ages storyline, I sampled a couple of them and it would not matter how well written they were, I hated what they did to "my" BattleTech universe and cut myself off from anything post 3067. ::P:

Well I never really suggested genre fiction is great literature. Fun to read, sure, but then commercial tie-in fiction usually only is. While I think it would be fruitless to try to convince you otherwise, what they did to "your" Battletech has been subjected to so much internet misinformation that it would require a dedicated thread to change those misconceptions about what the DA era was really about.

Have you bothered to look at the ironwind website? There are plenty of new battletech figures mainly for the Word of Blake as they are the only faction producing new mechs. Likewise there are a lot of products covering the Jihad. CBT seems pretty alive and strong, myself I still prefer playing in the 3025 period, mechs are far less forgiving in that time period.

Fair Enough. Like I said, I have not been keeping track, partly because I moved away from my old CBT playing group, and partly due to being soured by the whole "Dark Ages" buisness (which might be considered a cautionary tale for publishers about alienating your long term consumers). I probably have a couple thousand dollars worth of books, rules and miniatures for CBT but I have not bought anything new for the last five years or more. ::(:

There are no "internet misconceptions" involved. I was there when the DA stuff made its debut and I didn't like the radical changes that were made in the BT universe. I read the "clicky" game fluff and the first couple of DA books and I hated them. Not because they were "poorly written" fiction (They were probably as well written as the best of the old books. Much of the CBT storyline was poor fiction and I was able to enjoy that) but becuase I did not like the changes they made in "re-booting" the game. I am not saying it was better or worse than the pre-DA BT universe, but I liked the old universe and didn't like the new one. Purely subjective but in the case of my gaming and my buying, its my opinion that matters. ::P:

No, because (1) their wesite is crap, (2) ordering anything from them is a PITA (I've tried both directly and through my FLGS) and (3) I have pretty much lost interest in the game (other than to woof about it).

On a different topic, GW have managed to get me buying some of their products again. Their new paint brushes are very good, a pro painter friend of mine tried them and he loves them. So I figured I would give them a try. So I pop into the local store and buy a set, then what do I spot in the new releases section - the scout speeder for marines. Now I love marine scouts so I had to buy one just to paint it. Now I just need to find a game to use it in.

Definitely check out the website then: www.classicbattletech.com

I highly reccommend picking up the Handbook series if you have an interest. So far they've released HB: House Steiner, Davion, and Marik, with Major Periphery Powers in electronic format, awaiting dead tree format. They replace the old House books (best. gaming. sourcebooks. EVAR.) and are really nice in that they include maps from all the major eras. Nominally set in 3067, but of course a lot of the info is back-compatable.

OK then. Keep in mind in the intervening years there have been massive flame wars, so I go into "that" mode.

All I can say is the fluff you saw at the beginning of the DA era was Republic inspired propoganda. Much of that is not how the universe "really" is.

I agree, though perhaps for different reasons. I felt the era more plausable than later eras, and had a better feel. Also House Kurita was not as much OTT space samurai, and had a better "Japan in WWII" feel, much superior to where they went with them.

You could always play 40K... ::D:

On another note, one thing I never understand is why people hate the 40k rules, but never adapt other rules to suit the figures. Well, maybe a few do. But not many...

No new Kurita or Capellan books yet? Those were my favorites. I have modeled and completely painted the entire House Hiritsu forces (Lao) consisting reinforced Mech battalion, an infantry battalion, and assorted transport and support weapons. I dug through every novel, every sourcebook and every TR to identify as many "cannon" Hiritsu mechs and personnel as possible, and built the whole force around that core. I have a full battalion painted of the 3rd Sword of Light (Kurita) although this one was just made using the random lance tables in the books. I had started on a Ghost Bear Galaxy, but as I had less interest in the Clans that project is only about half finished.

All painted, all based and all sitting unused in a box in storage. ::(:

I have a similar size forces for Kurita, Davion and the free worlds league. Also a Clan cluster and then various merc forces and comstar at company to regimental strength. Liao is my smallest force. In total I have around 500 painted Battletech vehicles (Mechs, aircraft, tanks and infantry). I also have almost every book ever published.

I can easily resist Space Hulk for any number of reasons. Most of that is that there is no way they will refrain from using the sculpts again and the fact that at least two of my regular gaming compatriots are getting copies.

As stated earlier, I'm not terribly excited by anything GW has admitted to having in the pipeline or that they are expected to have in the pipeline through the end of the year.
