Draconid Lord

Hi all,

Just finished this guy and mostly happy with it. Some things turned out better than others. One of the things I'm trying to do is cut down on the dullcote and see if I can keep my colors from getting muted. The dullocte does make for nice photos but the color loss is not good.

Anyhow, the reds are mainly red, purple and chestnut inks over a basecoat of a light orange, highlighted with yellow. So the steps are zenith prime black/white, skin orange, highlight/drybrush yellow-orange-white, glaze red ink, glaze purple ink, glaze chestnut ink in some spots. I mixed a little mattle varnish in with the ink to make it flow better but I'm not sure I like the muting of color. Gloss varnish works better to keep the colors. Maybe I should have gone for NMM this time, I don't know.

I like this guy... except for the wings. They look puny for his body size. Otherwise, I really like the color choices. I honestly don't think that going NMM with his armor and weapons would have improved him any; there's already a lot going on with the transitions in his scales and claws/horns. Ultimately, I think NMM would have detracted from that.

Good looking paint, sir! :B):

Very well done! I really like the shading on the scales.

Looks like he might be a little top heavy though given the small looking base. Maybe put him on a slightly larger base so he doesn't tip over so easily?

He's actually pretty stable as the shield and wings put his center of gravity over the base more. I probably will put him on a scenic base later and re-do some details and clean up the armor some more. Not a whole lot but enough to make him look better.

Well, the wings were a design choice pretty much. My idea was they were vestigal and not used by this particular subspecies except for display. Here is the original sketech. He was supposed to be heavier (old and well fed) initially but the slim look turned out better. Jeff Grace did the sculpting for Dragonblood Minis.

Then I'd probably convert him with some bigger wing-a-lings when I'd get my hands on him. Personal preference. Still looks good though. :)

Fair Enough.. I'm thinking of making either a spineback version or conversion part if people don't want wings, and I could probably make bigger wings also. The wings are what make him a half-dragon so I don't think I want to lost them entirely.

love to see original minis, sketch art etc.

I like the armor the way it is. Everyone is saying base him bigger and I agree, but do it mildly with this guy, try not to take away from the red baddness that is the draconian lord.

I'd use him in my GW Chaos army as a Demon Prince...

Looking good.

Cool.. he's not really demon prince size though, more like 40mm at the top of the wings. He would be about 40mm at the top of head if he stood straight up. I should take a shot with another fig. OK here it is.

Guys,

There are alternatives to Dullcoat.

And I am not talking about cheapo Krylon crap.

Floquil Figure Flat will not mute your colors, though it will definitely take some sparkle out of your metallics. Also the guys at my flgs told me that Testors Model Master flat sealer is vastly superior to the cheaper dullcoat. Remember that dullcoat comes out yellow when sprayed on a white surface; this will kill your careful blends. The Model Master flat sealer is far less yellow (they offered to get open cans they had of both, and to a test by spraying them side by side on white paper to show me the difference, but my three year-old was antsy so I had to decline.)

When I spray seal minis with Floquil Figure Flat, I use the same old cutting board I use to primer them in white, and the floquil figure flat leaves NO yellow tinge over the white at all.

However, it is only available via the internet.

But your whites will stay white.

P.S. I may not be able to paint even close to how you can Eric, but I have been spray sealing minis since 1986 (used to use Ral Partha spray sealer; Man that stuff was glossy!)

Ah, now spineties without wing-a-lings would be way cool too. I'd definitely buy the fig then... prolly even two; one to do spineties, and one with bigger wing-a-lings. ::D:
